Report: Nintendo Switch Will Charge over USB-C

The Nintendo Switch may be abandoning the proprietary charging cables of the Wii U to adopt industry standard USB-C.

Here's an interesting little tidbit for you, EB Games Australia briefly put up a listing for a "Nintendo Switch Extra Long 3M Charging Cable". The really interesting thing is that the accompanying image seemed to show a simple USB-C cable. Technobuffalo saved a screengrab before EB took it down, which you can see to the right.

Nintendo has a history of using proprietary cables for their portable systems - everything from the GameBoy Advance SP right up until the New Nintendo 3DS. Last year there was even a bit of controversy when Nintendo did not include a charger with the New 3DS XL in order to keep costs down. The move from proprietary chargers to USB-C would definitely help in reducing the costs of the console.

This information has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo, however, as the company is refusing to comment on any Nintendo Switch information ahead of its January 12 presentation.

The Australian EB site also has The Switch listed for $999.

The main question should also be will it have turbocharging when no docked and outside doing whatever?

Placeholder price, still TBD at this point. I expect it to come down but honestly people will probably pay whatever Nintendo asks for.

Yeah, hard to tell through. What with the Australia Tax and all.

Nothing simple about usb-c. It's still a mess of confusion/bad manufacturing and manufacturers using it however they want (dash)

Just make sure you grab it from a legit well-known manufacturer[1]. You're dead-on about a lot of them though; it's a crap-shoot at best.

[1] At the very least, they'll have a return policy and/or you can bully some poor customer-service SOB over the phone to make one up for an individual case

Would there be any benefit for the consumer if would Nintendo continue with proprietary chargers?

I've heard it said that the N64's cartridges ensured that the load time was much lower than the disc-based competitors, since the cartridges had less memory and thus less memory to search for the parts that are relevant, but is there any consumer benefit with regards to the chargers?

Nintendo, we need an old - school Sega with USB-c charges for joysticks! ;-P
In reality, Nintendo can work to make their ALL hardware better than now. Their games only anime-style.
