Interesting. If at least 4 other AG are also against the R18+ rating, why don't we hear from them? It seems he's the only one saying anything. Personally, I think he's stretching the truth just a little, indulging in his little paranoid fantasies. I just love the way he takes the absolute worst examples from M rated games (including an example from a game that was never even sold in the West and was for the Japanese market only!) to prove his point. You know what... I have to agree with him. Yes, there are far more important things for him to be focused on than game ratings. Which begs the question: if he has so many more pressing matters to deal with, how does he keep making time to oppose R18+ games? Either he's a negligent AG, or a hypocrite. Either one could be used as leverage to oust him. | |
So that's Carmageddon, Rapeplay, Counterstrike(?), Fallout 3, don't know this one?, and GTA. Could Mr Atkinson then explain why Neighbours(Car Crash), Irreversible(9 minute rape sequence), Mad Max?, Bad Taste, Trainspotting or Sin City haven't been banned? In fact I believe since 1995, a total of five films have been banned. One of these wasn't banned for its autoerotic asphyxiation storyline, but the idea that it happened to a child. Nice play of what happened to the refugees though. Read somewhere on here that his son a professional gamer and I'm sure he has shown his dad classic examples of games what banned but are no where near as bad as he depicts and how misinformed 3/4 of that statement is so if he can't do it no one can. But then again his son probably the reason he opposes games so much as he games to spite for not respecting him (as who would with) so his dad blames games for his parental problems. Saying that might be a good way to stir him by asking dose his son export 18 rated games and if so how come he not a serial rapist and murder? And if goes on that was due to his parental responsibility then say well don't the rating system help guide parents on the matter and ask why and follow that line of enquiry. Failing that get the most foulest and vile 18 rated films available to buy and ask him hows stuff this graphic and horrific is available what more often than not don't show consistences for their actions more realistic than any game could ever be as actually humans not pixels depicting the deed and say is he seriously suggesting GTA is more damaging to youth than this? | |
Atkinson, along with having no time for 'nerds' also seemed to have no time to do any research on the things he attacks, nor anytime to even consider the basic freedom of the Australian populus. Australia's Atkinson Has No Time For Nerds
Notorious South Australia Attorney General Michael Atkinson has responded angrily to criticism that his refusal to allow an R18+ videogame rating in Australia is undemocratic, saying he has more important things to do than worry about "nerds."
Atkinson wrote a letter to the Adelaide Advertiser in response to a reader who suggested his refusal to even consider an R18+ rating for videogames, despite the large number of people who want to see a mature rating for games put into place, is undemocratic. The comment may have touched a nerve because the AG's response was heated to say the least, with name-calling, wild and unfounded accusations about videogames and a repeat of his earlier claim that he is not alone among Attorneys General who oppose an R18+ rating for games.
Atkinson's letter in full:
You have to give Atkinson a perverse sort of credit. Despite being at the center of the most visible and enduring videogame controversy in Australia, and indeed in the entire world, his commitment to remaining mired in ignorance is absolutely unwavering. No matter what else you may think of the man, his deep and unwavering commitment to his own personal beliefs is admirable. It's just a pity it happens to affect so many other people who may not share them.
It's quite clear by now that despite earlier rumblings, Atkinson isn't going to budge on the matter of an R18+ rating, leaving his removal - via the democratic process, to be clear on the matter - as the only way around his intransigence. But how does he fare on other matters? Is he a competent Attorney General beyond this particular hang-up? Do non-gamers hold him in any kind of esteem? Objectively speaking and taking into account the full range of voters and issues, does he have a realistic chance of re-election?
