Nintendo is Making a Full Pokemon RPG for the Switch

pokemon-320

We may not have heard of it in Nintendo's recent Direct broadcast, but there is a full Pokemon RPG in development for the Switch.

Pokemon fans were disappointed when there was no mention of a main-line RPG in development for the Nintendo Switch in last week's Nintendo Direct. But those same fans got excited yesterday, as Nintendo confirmed that there is a full Pokemon RPG in the works for its newest console.

As rumors had said, the game is in the works at Game Freak. In the Nintendo Spotlight stream yesterday, the developer said that the new game was "maybe more than a year away." Beyond that, there were no further details offered.

Could this game be the rumored Pokemon Stars? Maybe. It could also be a version of Sun and Moon for the Switch, much like the recently announced Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

We'll have to wait to find out, but Pokemon fans now have one more thing to look forward to on Switch.

Surprising absolutely no one. With the Switch being a hybrid (but more or less a handheld in principle) it wasn't a question of if, but when it would get a proper Pokemon game.

Yeah, this will probably drive huge sells when the game comes out.

So when people say Pokemon RPG its essentially the Pokemon games they have making since forever?

I came here thinking Nintendo was gonna make a Pokemon game with an actual story and characters and stuff. I have never really thought of the main Pokemon games as RPGs.

Now, here's the thing - Mainline Pokemon (i.e. 'Pokemon Stars') or Sideline Pokemon RPG (i.e. 'Pokemon Colosseum XD 2: Gale of Electric Boogaloo')? Because I tell you now, one of these will make me buy a Switch...

Though, given it's a year+ away, probably a sideline game. Even if they have to do an overhaul I doubt it'd take that long to port Sun/Moon or Ultra Sun/Moon over. Although although, maybe they're gonna take dumbass road and split the next generation of pokemon between the 3DS and the Switch... fuck, now I wish it is a Sideline game, I just made myself paranoid that they might be that dumb. God dammit.

Damn, bit late on the news, are we? So far for relying on The Escapist for gaming news. Pity, used to be my premier source.

Regardless, this together with Metroid Prime 4 cemented my wish to buy a Switch. I'm quite sure it won't just be a version of Sun/Moon. They'd have included it with the Ultra games announcement if that were the case. It makes no sense to use the vague language of a 'core RPG Pokemon game' otherwise. So yeah call me excited.

You should see the competitive side. Shit's crazy with all the min-maxing going on, Pokemon games facilitate some hardcore RPG crap for sure.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Switch confirmed. :P

Pokemon not an RPG? Pokemon is one of the few series to maintain classic RPG gameplay. It is more an RPG than most "RPGs" today.

Edit: Its more RPG than Final Fantasy now.

Those were side games though, the point of this is that we can look forward to an actual Red/Blue-etc type game.

Says who? They said they are making a "Pokemon RPG for the Switch". There have been plenty of Pokemon RPGs that arent a main series game.

Saelune:

Says the Pokemon guy actually making the announcement during the Nintendo Direct stream. Look it up, because I don't know why the article didn't include that quote. It's going to be a core game. They only ever called the Red/Blue-etc games core games. So y'know, hype hype hype and all that.

Here's a record of the Nintendo Direct that I'm watching at the moment because I incidentally love the streamer who covers it, but there's the actual announcement.

Hm, so he did. I still would wait before getting overhyped though.

Well, guess I'll be buying a Nintendo Switch then.

Saelune:

Well, I'm not exactly expecting this game actually being in a new Pokemon generation. I'm guessing an alternate story in an established generation. But that's alright with me. I'm perfectly fine with it being in whatever previous gen (as long as it's not 3, fuck all that water) if it plays like the glorious third person RPG we all want. If it has even 25% of the breadth of Breath of the Wild I'm so fucking on board. It won't take much to please me with this.

Wrex Brogan:
Though, given it's a year+ away, probably a sideline game.

Nope. It's a pretty poor article that doesn't even bother to quote the Pokemon developer who made the announcement. It's going to be a core game, aka the Red/Blue type games.

Maybe my faux ban on Pokemon will finally be lifted. It's not that I hate Pokemon but I don't really play handhelds. I'm the guy who bought a GBA adapter for my Game Cube so that I could play Phantasy Star. Though I'm a bit resentful this is going to cause me to buy a Switch for my Wife, a Switch for my Daughter, and a Switch for my Father just so they can all play Pokemon together.

I wonder if it's going to a Coliseum affair (Please yes!) or a Mystery Dungeon entry (eh...)

For me, Pokemon was more of a collect-a-thon with a JRPG plot (nowerdays. Gen 1 and 2 has just "become champion" with defeating the bad guys being more of a side-thing you just had to do) and turn-based combat instead of platforming.
A collect-a-thon that, unless I lived in Japan, required me to purchase two copies of the game in both versions to actually get a 100% chance. Which, now with over 600 of those buggers and countless of them exclusive to events I would need to buy a planeticket to get, is basically impossible to accomplish.

Collecting them all is more achievable now than it has ever been. I should know, I managed it.

I used to buy both copies, now I dont. I dont need to. Want that pokemon only in Sun? Put the one thats only in Moon and ask for it. You will get it.

Well, trading is now making it a non-issue. But want any Event-Exclusive ones? No chance to ever get them. Not just event-versions of normal ones, I think there are quite a few that you can literally only get via an event or cheat device.
And then there are, of course, several of the legendaries of previous versions. If you don't have the version in question, it is probably a bit tricky getting those without buying the newest release of those versions in some form (Remake or VC re-release)

Well, last year they gave out every single event legendary from Mew to Diancie. I made sure not to miss out on that.

As for regular legendaries, well, ORAS had like, 90% of them available.

They should just straight up combined all the current generations into one game.

I'm not up to date on everything to do Pokemon, but wouldn't a year out mean that it would be the start of the next generation of Pokemon games, rather than still apart of the Sun/Moon generation? I thought they mostly just did two major releases per gen, the first release being the two games released on the same day, the second release being the third complete edition, or now just the sequels to the two first releases in a generation. With Ultra, they have no reason to stick around in Hawaii as they hit the quota of games per generation.

Bob_McMillan:

In fairness, they've been trying to put in actual characters and story and stuff since Black & White. The degree to which they've succeeded is perhaps debatable, but, you know.

Technically you could probably call Colosseum and XD "core" games. I don't know where Nintendo/Game Freak would fall in that regard, but they have the same general gameplay and gameplay loop.

I think it'd be silly for them to take that track again since people have really wanted a full-scale Pokemon console game for years, but I'm not willing to put anything past Nintendo.

Maybe? It's hard to tell with pokemon - they used to do 3 games to a set, then Gen 4 had 3 games and two remakes, then sequels with no remakes, then two games, two remakes, and their development times are getting faster... at this point, it's either Gen 8 or Remakes (or, as implied, a really late port) given the time frame, or it's own separate game that's still considered mainline. They do different shit each cycle, honestly.

Eeeeeuugh. Hopefully it's it's own thing then, and not a split generation across consoles. That'd be a superb dick move.

A shame too, since a new XD-like game would probably make me get a Switch for it. Not 'Pokemon Chair, exclusive to the Switch, alongside Pokemon Desk, exclusive to the 3DS!'. Just have to wait and see for some more details, I guess.

So, Pokemon gets its monster hunter RPG, Xenoblade gets its JRPG, Fire Emblem has an SRPG in the works...now, what's that other Nintendo franchise that needs another RPG installment?

(Yes, I know, you're probably sick of me whining by now.)

Metroid (but considering how unimportant that franchise is in Japan and Nintendo only really considers Japan most of the time, I doubt it's going to happen), Zelda, Splatoon.

We could, but The Pokemon Company (remember, this ain't Nintendo) just used 'core' for their mainline RPGs. Plus, the announcer guy said 'core RPG game', so. Somehow I doubt that the core RPG that we'll see for the Switch will introduce a new generation, but I'm 100% cool with a new game in an established generation. Just not Gen 3 please. Fuck all that water.

Samtemdo8:

Oh fuck don't even get my hopes up. Like a Witcher 3 type deal where you can travel between the regions and each region is a huge open world and it's all third person and oh fuck yes.

Nah man I'll be cool if it even has 25% of that breadth.

Bob_McMillan:

I came here thinking Nintendo was gonna make a Pokemon game with an actual story and characters and stuff. I have never really thought of the main Pokemon games as RPGs.

Oh the main Pokemon games are RPGs alright, just extremely simple RPGs with little real effort put into either their stories or combat systems, with each entry only different from the previous main entries in the series only in extremely superficial if not outright meaningless ways.

Hawki:
So, Pokemon gets its monster hunter RPG, Xenoblade gets its JRPG, Fire Emblem has an SRPG in the works...now, what's that other Nintendo franchise that needs another RPG installment?

Earthbound/Mother perhaps? Ooh! How about Robotrek?

Samtemdo8:

They really should, but Nintendo never will allow such a thing.

Um, guys? You do know I was referring to Golden Sun right? Hence the reference to "whining," and that you're probably sick of me bringing it up on a semi-regular basis? Why I used the word "need" because it's been 7 years since the last installment, with said installment ending on a cliffhanger?

And yeah, I know, it's very unlikely there'll ever be a fourth installment, but I'm sure we can all relate to the catharsis of occassionally venting one's spleen.

I honestly reckon that's because it's just mister Whitaker who's posting news these days so I'm more worried than annoyed. Dark days in the offices of The Escapist.

What sort of story can you expect with something that is effectively "Fantasy Poaching & Dogfighting: The Game" ...?

I love Nintendo products in general (because I'm a hyperconsumerist shill) but I haven't played a Pokemon game since Red, so actually OT I've never thought of Pokemon as RPG either. Admittedly I haven't played much... mainly because I found the concept incredibly fucking creepy. Personal hangups, but usually teenagers that torture and cage animals for fun or profit turn out to be weirdoes and just plain wrong, and trying to make it cutesy gave it that weird North Korean cartoon propaganda for kids-vibe.

Not judging ... just explaining how Ifind it creepy so I don't play them.

I mean it has numbers and levelling, but I fail to see how having numbers that influence other numbers simply being more visible than in most games qualifies it as a roleplaying game. That's just gameplay. I don't remember ever allocatng those numbers to specific stats.

Have they introduced anything since then that could make it a roleplaying game?

I am interested in seeing what thisdoes for Switch sales numbers. I mean Pokemon seems tocontinue to carry 3DS numbers .... maybe it might bea main game line seriesand Nintendo has effectively told the parent company; "Could you please help us makethe Switch the premier handheld for this generation?"
