i guess ignoring what kinda game people really do want to play is the wave of the future.
Here's hoping a part of the 'new direction' is being able to fire from the hip.
Love the Scott Steiner reference, this 'new direction' thing could be good or bad(I have not played RE5 yet)
You know, I hate that complaint. Chris Redfield wasn't some uber marine from the future, he wasn't a super macho COG soldier, he was a special agent. You can't expect to run around in circles while still squeezing off a head shot. You just don't get the ammo to waste on it. My friend has medals for his shooting in the army, and still can't pull off a decent shot while moving. While I liked this game I'm not sure what the statment really means about it being, "The new direction".
Goodbye horror 2009 RIP Goodbye Zombie *snif* i miss you
Have you seen the guy though? He's massive, I doubt that any kind of special agent has a bicep as twice as wide as my neck. My major reason for that complaint is that I've found it jumbles up the combat and movement too much for me to accept it. A Dead Space firing mechanic would work well, but even then I would find it totally acceptable to be able to aim and fire while moving BUT with a large kick-back. I think this would flesh out the combat more, allowing you to develop tactics around aimming, moving and choosing whether to stop and place a skilled shot or taking a risk with a more buckling fire from the hip.
I liked the game, the controls were a bitch at first, but when you got used to them you soon forget about the old game controls. Saying that, I've only played all the games since last November, so I haven't been a life long fan... And the picture shown took me about 5 times to get past when I played it.
That's actually a good thing, most "gamers" don't have a clue of how games should work, or what they want for that matter. They just want to play the same thing over and over.
I want another game with Claire.
why did they have to do this???
She's in the new Wii game, Darkside Chronicles, which takes place during RE2. But yes, more Claire, please.
Neither can Marcus Fenix. Neither can Master Chief. That's why you fire your kill shots from a stationary position and use your run-and-gun to suppress the opposition, drive them back, wear them down, gain ground and all that. By the way, I am talking video game tactics here. I'm not going to pretend to know how to survive on a real battlefield. Or, if you're Chris Redfield, you can just stand still and shoot head-on at everything that jumps at you, like a dolt.
I also dislike this complaint. Gamers constantly talk down any third person shooter that doesn't control exactly like Gear of War (or Kill.Switch to be pedantic). Stop being so damn lazy! Anyway, I want know what happened to the T-virus, I want my shuffling zombies back! It doesn't mean Las Plagas have to go or anything. In fact with the new plot seeming to be entirely about using these things as weapons it would be cool to see one used to try and destroy the other, naturally with disastrous results...
Chief and Fenix absolutely can shoot precisely while moving, it's what sets them apart as unstoppable space marines. Anyway...
I'll note I cited Dead Space in my post instead of Gears of War, and I also thought the lame co-op 'help-up' system (a la Gears of War) in Resident Evil 5 was a terrible blow to the action of the game :P I'm not looking for a fancy, over-the-top run-and-gun, I just want a format that actually makes sense to me and isn't horribly clumsy.
Bugger. Guess I'll have to find some other franchise to amuse me then, if they're determined to keep going with the Redfields and their dull, dull ways.
I'm interested in RE as a series. The narrative change looks to be interesting, but the real question is what kind of gameplay Capcom will go for: the traditional survival horror of the olden days, or the action-survival of the new.
As much as I want Resi 5, Im still missing the Zombie as an enemy. Track back a few years and imagine a Resi 1 zombie riding a bike whilst you shoot at them, it is laughable. Whilst the new Plagus enemies are challenging and still scary, they are still the new kids in the Resiverse, and they will never scare me as much as the Zombie's used to. R.I.P (again) pixellated Zombies.
I could be lazy and answer your question by saying "That's the designer's problem to figure out, I just want to be able to move and shoot" but instead I'll be even lazier and say "It's a video game; I want to be able to move and shoot."
Urr...Why not shut down the RE series...really it has been done to death. Or at least make a stop.... Just look at how many there are: Resident Evil Thats one milked franchise right there...
Yeah, but the thing is. RE is actually pretty good, and Fun .
As I've said before, the most important thing to me is that they keep the so-bad-its-good writing, I'm OK.
Hmm it seems to me that they should do a game with HUNK as the main character. I mean come on we know nothing about him, other than he is a badass commando who works for umbrella(well I cant say that hes a full time employee), his nick name is Mr Death and that he can snap necks like Steven Sagal.
I know. When you're going through the old lab (where you first fight the Lickers) I thought it would have been the perfect time to give us some old-school zombies to shoot. It wouldn't have quite fit in with the story, true, but just couple locked in a room somewhere would have been nice.
No, Aiming and shooting while moving is fine, but shooting moving and not aiming is not. You turn this from 'tactical' to 'wiz-bang-shooty-genericness'. It may not seem like a big deal, but just picture chris "running and gunning". Resident Evil's formula seems to have always been "Move, Stop, Aim, Shoot" - just take out the "stop" part so that we don't feel like we're controlling a bus.
Yeah true, just add a little bonus room when the protagonist is like wtf when he is suddenly being hugged by some zombies. The narration for that would be hilarious ^^
If they really say that 1-4 (and everything in between) is "act one" they should rename the next games.
You said it. | |
Wow. I guess Capcom is willing to say and do anything in order to ride their current wave of popularity, even dismissing their previous games as a mere precursor to their upcoming titles. I don't know about other people, but I think they're full of hot air. And it is a shame about the removal of Zombies. I'll admit I like fast zombies better than slow ones, but at least RE4 had Regenerators. But hey, pretty soon Capcom will put out a game so sexist/racist that it offends every person and political group on the planet, and then the company will fade into obscurity.
Well it seems rather official that the "survival horror", at least in RE case, is more or less ass non existant as the old zombies. Anyone remeber Parasite Eve series?
Will the "new direction" include villains who actually have a motive? Competent protagonists? Or are we just replacing elaborate puzzles with mini-boss fights in order to obtain keys?
Here's a suggestion to add to the, "They'll never ever do this," but how about we FINALLY remove the name "Resident Evil" and just make it "Biohazard" like it is supposed to be? Resident Evil was an appropriate name for the first one because it took place in a mysterious mansion, and you could argue that the people in it, or "Residents," were evil zombies. I really don't think it is appropriate when you expand the populace into an entire town (RE2/3) or village (RE4). Also, I think we'd have to say that RE4 marked the new direction for the series. For one, the Survival Horror aspect was scaled way back to enhance the action aspect. Secondly, for the first time, the "virus" afflicting everyone was derived back to a more natural virus, as opposed to something that a crazy scientist made in a hidden Umbrella Corporation lab. And finally, it took the action out of Raccoon City and the United States. Of course, they may be referring to RE5 as a new direction because now the series is going to SUCK more than it did when RE3 came out, but hopefully that is not the case.
i wasnt so sure about buying this game after i heard it went towards the action side of things but i bought it yesterday and im loving it. the boss battles look awesome, the graphics are great. its alot more action that say resident evil 2 but why is this such a bad thing ? It still has its scary moments. personally i thought the mining part with the lantern was pretty creepy. i like the new direction. things have to be brought forward ay some point huh ?
My sentiments exactly.

Capcom: RE5 Marks "New Direction" For Series
Like Resident Evil, but don't like Resident Evil 5? You better get used to Chris Redfield having huge biceps because Capcom says RE5 is the first step in a new direction for the series.
Whether you love it, hate it, or don't really care about it, Resident Evil 5's way is here to stay. As Capcom sees it, RE5 marks the beginning of a "new direction" for the franchise, while everything that came before should effectively be regarded as "act one."
"Resident Evil 5 is really setting the franchise up for what's going to happen now going forwards, so establishing new characters and storylines, and pretty much a new direction for the game," Capcom's Chris Kramer said on the last Major Nelson podcast. "It's a really good time for new players to jump in, because what we're doing is kind of waving goodbye to a lot of storyline elements from, essentially, act one of the Resident Evil franchise."
Kramer's talking primarily about story things, and if we're considering RE1-4 as "act one," well that's quite a bit of narrative baggage to be unloaded. Still, what about RE5 as the beginning of a new direction for Resident Evil's gameplay? It essentially followed the third-person shooter mold set by RE4, but added co-op and eschewed all pretenses of being a survival-horror game that RE4 had left behind. Should we expect future REs to continue to play more like Gears of War than the classic RE games?
Kramer's remarks contradict statements made by other Capcom staff only recently. "Resident Evil 5 is practically guaranteed to be the last of its kind, with the game's producer, Jun Takeuchi, assuring us that a reboot is in order for the inevitable Resident Evil 6," 1UP reported in February.
Still, Capcom could reboot the gameplay, but leave the story in Resident Evil 6 as following from RE5's lead, which would work out just fine. Bets on how much bigger Chris Redfield's arms will be in the next game start now. I'm guessing they'll be Scott Steiner size - gotta be pretty easy to pick up some illegal steroids in Africa, right?
