Escapist Under New Management (Again)

Hey friends. It's Russ. If you haven't yet heard, changes are afoot.

https://medium.com/@russpitts/the-last-of-escapist-magazine-5dd4f852703a

The Escapist was recently purchased by Enthusiast Gaming (http://enthusiastgaming.com/), and their first act was asking me to come back and help re-launch the site.

You will undoubtedly have questions. I have very few answers right now. Almost everything is still being decided, and I will try very hard to keep you al updated as we go.

I respect and appreciate your contributions as Escapist community immensely. While we will be making changes, I want you all to feel like your commitment to this site and community have not been discarded. To that end, I'm going to be reaching out to the moderators soon to start the conversation about how to move forward here. Feel free to post thoughts. I'll do my best to keep up.

As for how the rest of the site will be operated, what content will be produced, direction, schedules ... TBD and stay tuned.

Thanks.

Cheers Russ, I'm looking forward to seeing where this is all going .

I believe one of my fellow moderators has sent you a link to our Discord group, but if you want me to PM you a new one, or have another preferred means of communication, feel free to shoot me a message.

I don't think I received that.

Let's hope the SS Escapist II boat doesn't end up shipwrecked like SS Escapist I

Excited to see what happens. I just logged back into my account for the first time in a LONG time after hearing the news.

We'll start calling it the SR-2. That'll make certain it doesn't crash that badly. :D

A bunch of us old-timers read the news a few days back, excited to see what is coming down the pipeline.

Welcome back. Now we can stop the bleeding.
If you're back, does that mean Susan's back too?

First time logging on in ages, and I gotta say, I'm feeling pretty optimistic! Looking forward to seeing what you've got in store, Russ

Haven't been on the forums in a while, I am excited to see where this goes!

Not officially, but she'll still probably be giving advice/smacking him in the head on occasion. :D

Not really. I mean, we're still married, but she's not working with me on this.

Welcome back! And good luck with the renovation! I was really happy when I saw the news.
You're probably going to drown in comments and tips, but I'll add mine anyway: this site has a lot of content on it, but you really wouldn't know that when you look at the front page. Present and make use of the assets you've already got.
And again: really happy.

Welcome back Russ. It's nice to have you back.

Hope you figure figure out the revenue stream thing. Editorial staff that aren't paid very much;

1) Aren't very good at what they do
2) Become radicalized

Gaming press as a whole seems to be struggling, even the likes of PCGamer have turned into complete <<redacted>> this year.

I'm really only here for the weekly Yahtzee, but the Escapist is the only gaming site I still visit.

At the risk of being banned, because lets face it, this website has a reputation for banning people for trivial reasons, I'm going to leave this here, and hope that the new editorial and writing staff take some, if not all (one can hope right?) of what is said to heart.

I have been a long-standing reader of this website for years, and I want to see it succeed, but not if it's just going to be more of the same.

Considering that getting Bob back was one of the first things Russ did, that states an intent, at the very least, to bring things to a more centralized point. Considering it's been 7 years since he was involved in anything here outside of being on the ending credits of ZP, I'd imagine some of the more recent missteps are going to be reversed in as short a time as possible. :P

hopefully the flagship captain of the site Yahtzee will continue to stay here with Zero Punctuation.. it's weathered that storms and still strong..

Under US law they're technically responsible to keep him employed since he emigrated to the United States, Yahtzee isn't going anywhere except voluntarily and if he does he'll have to leave the US where he's moved, sooo...

Yahtzee is probably one of the reasons why there's still a site at all.

Also I strongly recommend reading Russ' full writeup on this on Medium, it's fascinating stuff and got me excited.

Wow, just randomly came back out of morbid curiosity to see what state the forums were in. Only to be greeted with this news. Good luck to all on the revamp, this used to be my favourite gaming site back in the day.

Welcome back Russ. It's nice to have you back.

Thanks!

Quick note on a new forums Code of Conduct: It's in progress. Once the rest of the editorial team is fully in place, we'll be meeting with the mods to get their feedback/blessing on the proposed new rules. This should happen in the next few weeks.

One thing I have already (re)implemented in the interim is heavy enforcement of the rule against harassment and/or shitposting against staff members and contributors. I have asked the mods to interpret this liberally. Our forums are not provided as a place to promote hate or publicize grudges against Escapist or its staff.

More when there is more.

I wish you luck. The place is in a rather sorry state right now but with a lick of paint here and a generous dollop of hopefully apolitical new content there it can be an awesome place again.

I just wanted to pop in to say, as someone who used to think of The Escapist as the best gaming site on the internet, I super excited to hear all this.

This site was amazing under you, Steve Butts, and Susan.
I remember something started feeling off about things after Susan left, and then it took a giant nose dive right when Greg Tito got canned - I canceled my Publisher's Club membership as soon as I found out he had been as far as I could tell unceremoniously fired. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes beyond bits and pieces I've managed to pick up here and there.

But! I am definitely glad that you're back and the site is coming back - I've been kind of lurking about occasionally poking my head in to see what's going on and then being sad. So being able to poke my head be able to look forward to what's coming is quite a nice change of pace!

This was posted in the wrong forum. It took me two weeks to see it, and I check the site almost every day. Nothing should be posted in Site Information and Announcements. Ever.

It was a bad idea that only serves to ensure people don't see the important announcements. I'm not going to check a forum only for announcements, just in case of the rare occasion that there happens to a new announcement. They should stickied in Off-topic if you want people to see them. They can be moved here after they stop being relevant, I guess.

Isn't that why the little *New!* icon appears near the forum name, so you can say "Oh hey look, there's something new in a barely-used section of the forum! :O" instead of being "When the heck was this thread made? Why was I not informed about this new thread?"

This sounds like great news to me - welcome back. The Escapist has been a part of my standard browsing rotation for a decade at this point, but during the last few years I've kept it there mostly out of tradition since there hasn't been much going on here - and I had started to worry that one day I'd just be greeted by a permanent 404. I'm glad to know that won't happen any time soon, and that this place might be getting a little more lively again.

For my part, I probably would've missed it if it had been anywhere but here - I expect to find site information and announcements under site information and announcements, and don't always visit off topic when I stop by.

Is there one for new threads too? I thought it was just for new posts in threads you've looked at or something. I've never noticed because I don't waste my time going to the main forum directory, I just use the dropdown menu.

And yet you always go to Site Information and Announcements even though it hasn't had a post in years? Weird.

Anyway, the proof is that this thread only has 28 comments, despite being the official thread while Redlin's was made after and is barely coherent as to the topic but still has 3 pages.

I believe so. I was running through multiple forums groups earlier trying to see if there was anything about ZP not being posted, so I've seen most of the still-used areas recently. :P
