I was going to say Dreamland, but then people would be all "WTF? Kirby?". I've wanted to try this for a while now- post impressions of games you've played, starred in or seen in your dreams. Try to do it like a preview or news article. I know dreams tend to wander or blur perception, but try to fill in the gaps with your own logic, who knows, some might actually work in reality. Also, I'll accept movies, TV shows and general ideas, so long as they tie in with geek culture.

I'll start with one particularly vivid dream/nightmare.

I headed over to a friend's place to try out his new MMO on PC. It should be noted, being a nightmare, I kinda wound up inside this world, being chased around.

Overview- Set in a giant decaying industrial city landscape, the inhabitants try to eke out an existence among the ruins. It seems everyone who lives there went to sleep one day and awoke in this place, with only fuzzy half memories of their previous lives. The lives they know now are only misery, as the urban wasteland is stalked by towering monstrosites that move with suprising stealth among the ruined towers and oft-occuring rolling fog.

Gameplay- I didn't see a monster for a bit when I started playing. I was informed that they were completely unkillable, though you could challenge them, you'd always lose. It seems that the player has no choice but to run, and those things give quite the chase. They usually attack crowds, and don't seem to give up until they've consumed at least some victims. This creates an interesting crowd panic dynamic as you all flee. My first encouter occurred after I linked up with my friend and he took me to meet his guild. We entered a large run-down warehouse midway set into the ground. As we reached the gathering toward the back I met the guild and proceeded to introduce myself. Before I could, a God almighty CRASH roared out as one of those things smashed through the back wall and I realised the horrible truth. They can go clean through structures so that nowhere was safe, ever. From then on it was all running and screaming until I woke up. I'm going to fill in the gaps here and suggest the level up system is focused around speed and agilty, items are focused around tools for faster escape e.g. wire cutters, crowbars, fire axes. Another dynamic worth looking into would be having those monstrosities drawn towards crowds and large gatherings of players. A lot of work would have to be put into balancing out the gameplay, regenerating destroyed buildings, managing population, etc.

Visuals- This game looked amazing. The palette was really just shades of grey and brown, but style of the rotting buildings mixed with the expanses of rusting steel super-infrastructure, really conveyed a sense of "what happened here?". The city is huge, beyond what we're capable of in terms of engineering and industry, and it was varied too, so the art design of crumbling stone and rusting steels never got old. As mentioned before, fog would roll over constantly, the nights were long and the day only consisted of a few hours of feeble orange light, like the world had been fundamentally damaged. This made it really hard to see the monsters at a distance, especially in the crowded skyline.

Audio- Virtually no background music save for eerie sound effects made it unsettling and edgy during the off times, and chaotic noise of destruction and screaming during a chase was more than enough. Additionally, there was some kind of acoustic distortion going on, so it was hard to hear if a monster or a chase was near or not.

Story- Not a strong point for MMO's traditionally, but this one seemed focused on mystery and emptiness. Again, filling in the blanks here, but I think it should be quite vague and focus more on experience and atmosphere than backstory. I wouldn't mind working ARG (alternate reality game) elements into it, especially if they were written by a guy like the author of this website- www.johndiesattheend.com
Take a look around there and you'll realise he's not quite right in the head, but in a good way. If the whole focus of progression is about exploration of the hostile envronment, so as to deepen the bunny hole like that website, this game would be some kind of giant king freakazoid immpossible to categorise, so all game reviewers would choke themselves until dead to reclaim their honour, and we all laugh.

I look forward to whatever you guys have seen in your dreams, especially if you were drinking before you went to bed.
