Why do people put x's in their xXgamertagXx

Do they think it looks cool?

RogueRunner:
Do they think it looks cool?

Yes. Yes they do.

Also having X in your name makes you sound like a pornstar.

I hate that

They probably do, just like they put MLG to pretend they are a Major League Gamer. It just looks annoying if you ask me.

I agree with the above but some people I know do it so that they get their chosen name. Just with a few x's tagged on.

I don't know why. It just makes it harder to add them, if they are ok.

their HARDCORE!! or want to be....

it because "gamertag" is taken so they put an I or X before it or change an E to a 3 or an A to a 4

I just put an x in between the two words in my gamertag because they don't allow spaces and it would have taken way too much effort to reactivate the Xbox Live membership I had on the original Xbox.

RathWolf + account deactivation + failed reactivation for 360 = RathxWolf

To look cool and unique. It does not impress me though, especially is the gamertag itself is nothing to boast about.

they are using it to over compensate for something

Their skills

people taking things they see and not knowing what they mean but using them anyway. its to donate a persons straight edge status. alot of straight edge hardcore and punk bands use "x"s in their name e.g. XBishopX. and alot of diehard edgers have x's tatooed. and there ya have it =]

They do allow spaces my tag is proof for that.

Presumably because the...gamertag?
I'm going with "screen name," it sounds a bit less stupid.

Screen name they wanted to use was already in use.
Or they thought it looked cool.

so true...and earth crisis is the best!

This by the truckload.

I just presumed it was because for most websites/applications the decent plain names were already taken and having numbers next to your gamertag doesn't look so nice... so basically: He wanted "Solo" but it was taken, he could have done "Solo508" but it doesn't look as good as "XxSoloxX"... or so he thought.

They haven't realized the true nirvana brought on by adding Z's yet.
That's all, give them time.

Same reason why they throw in MLG or iTz: it makes them look like a pro. My friends and I laugh at most of these people, so it must not work.

Because the name "L33t" might be taken, so in order to have said name, they add the xX as a border.

i think it usually makes the gamertag look dumb, even if its a good one. i can understand adding it because the gamertag was taken, but i personally prefer adding a number

I just don't think it's that hard to come up with something original... like RogueRunner... YA

I only did because the name i wanted was taken

because what make any Game...err name cooler and more likely to appeal to the youth, the letter X

it is so goddamn stupid
"xXheadsh0tXx"- QED

Strange, wouldn't let me do it just as "Rath Wolf" for some reason.

People put 'x's either side of their Gamertag if the Gamertag they wanted was already taken, it works with other letters too. It's juat an alternative to putting a random stream of numbers after the namem.
Example, guy wants my Gamertag DMNecris, but I already have it, so he registers xDMNecrisx or o DMNecris o or some shit like that.

Depends. Some people think it's an "emo thing", others that it makes people look cool. The only reason why I do it (like in my username for YouTube) is because the name I wanted was already taken. I couldn't have "Draeth" so I went with "xXDraethXx".

I'm pretty sure it's because the name they wanted was already taken, and x is one of the few lower case symmetrical letters so it looks pleasing and doesn't make too much of a visual impact on the name.

Pretty obvious to me, it makes you look uber cool. R-tards.

This is the first time I heard such a thing :/ What isn't emo anyway?

When a gamertag/username is taken, people do it so they don't have to use numbers. What people have against numbers is beyond me.

I mean it has gotten to the point that I don't even register what their actual gt is I just see the x's and turn my head. In conclusion, if your like me and caterogize all the xXgtXx in the same category than how is it unique and how does it get people to see your already taken gt

X's have to do with straight edge. Hardcore (an offshoot of punk rock) bands in the 90s started putting X's around their names when Earth Crisis started the straight edge revival. Not surprisingly, many of the kids who listened to these bands did the same to their names on the internet. Then it spread like wildfire. Used to be that I would see like one kid a night, now its 3 or 4 a lobby. I always make fun of them for "being straight edge" (note: been edge myself for about 9 years) and they never get it, nor do they know what straight edge is.

Really though, if anyone tries to tell you otherwise or that something else started it I'm gonna start posting album covers.

well, when I used to play Runescape my username was Nickydude X (its since been hacked I believe)... but that was only cause 'Nickydude' was unavailable, and I didn't want to put some random numbers after the name cause that felt lame.
