There are alot RPGs out there, and not all of them make a whole lot of sense, so which one do you thing has most stupid gameplay, characters, and/or story.

Two Worlds.

EDIT: "Oh no! It's The Taint!"

The one im making lol

Fable 1 + 2. It causes me physical pain to even entertain the thought of it being anywhere near an RPG. No offense, of course, to those who enjoy it.

Yes, anything made in rpg maker, some pretty stupid rpgs come out of that software...

Any JRPG

Its too linear to be classed as a proper RPG (in my opinion) - That being said i did enjoy it.

Ya know I've heard people say it's an rpg for people who hate rpgs.

Quest 64

Two Worlds.

I'm gonna go with this guy.

Hmm I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but Oblivion. It is a pretty good game once you get into it, but when I shut off my xbox I can't get myself to play it again. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or just played Fallout 3 too much.

"Divine Divinity". I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but it completely lacked any proper storyline to draw me in... What was there was like an improvised plot hastily thrown together by an inexperienced GM when his players totally screwed over the campaign plot and he had no backup.

Hard to say. I mean, the one I liked the least was Baldur's Gate, but I wouldn't describe that game as "stupid."

You've only played one or two, huh?

Earthbound. Cue angry mob.

See, now that's just cold. There are some good JRPGs; you just have to be able to gloss over the horrific garbage that permeates the system.

So Final Fantasy 1 (The most linear game EVER) isn't an RPG?

@topic

Final Fantasy 10. Shortened version of my experience with FFX.

"Alright, cool, I'm a sports star or something. Cool, story stuff. Ooh, fight that is impossible to lose. Story stuff. Story stuff. Story stuff. Piss-weak fighting. Story stuff. Story Stuff. Story stuff. Fuck this, I'm not trying to watch a movie."

Final Fantasy 7.

well, it IS an RPG, But i have a fearce dislike for FF games.

A Proper RPG nowadays should have loads to do, be pretty, and not commit the cardinal sin of "empty field *FWOOSH* 10 story Dragon" Spawning.

All I can see coming out of this thread is:

Try asking something quantifiable, or else you may well be trolling.

Oblivion.

As do I.

I disagree, however. An RPG, by definition, is a role-playing game; to become an RPG, all a developer has to do is implement a leveling system, and all RPG breaks loose.

A 'proper' RPG has developed characters that you care about, a well-thought out leveling system, and a great deal of challenge in it. "Openness" doesn't really bother me too much, because it's a lot harder to write a good story for an "open" game in place of a linear title.

Oh, and if I don't care about the characters, the RPG goes unplayed.

You can say stupidest, you know.

Final Fantasy 5, 7, and 8. 8 in particular had a RIDICULOUSLY convoluted plot and the Draw system for magic was hair-pullingly frustrating. 7 is highly overrated; I would consider it below-average for a JRPG, especially considering it followed 6, which was actually pretty excellent. 5 just feels like it's going through the motions too much; nothing makes it stand out among every other JRPG ever.

At one point I was determined to try and play through all the "great" jrpg's I'd missed over the years. It started out well: Chrono Trigger really is an excellent little game and in that same vein so is Final Fantasy 6. Final Fantasy 7 was also pretty good although I don't think I'll ever quite understand all the adoration it gets.

Things went downhill from there however. I'm sorry, but Final Fantasy 8 was horrible. The plot was both somehow over-dramatic to the point of being silly and completely incompetent at the same time. For example there's this grand dramatic battle to assassinate some witch involving all sorts of zany situations not limited to a stereotypical hesitant sniper and a run-in with your old 'school' rival who predictably had decided to join the enemy or whatever. Long story short the main character dies... but he doesn't, instead he's just hurt in a hospital after having been stabbed through the heart or somesuch. The consequences for your actions are almost nil and frankly it stunk of poor storytelling... and really, teenage combat school? The premise of the game was silly to start with, but that was the turning point where I tossed the game aside.

Similarly every attempt to play a jrpg since then has resulted in utter failure.

Methinks they're just not for me. Then again I'm not a fan of anime in general either so that's likely the source of the problem right there. As graphics enhance and storytelling 'improves', and I use that word lightly, it becomes harder and harder to escape from the anime roots and stories of these games. With FF6 just enough was left vague; the visuals stylish but not overtly anime, the story simple but enjoyable in a fairy-tale sort of way that really the player could fill in the blanks for themselves and enjoy the experience all the more for it. Same with Chrono Trigger and even FF7 to some extent. The dialogue is simplistic at best and the plot full of holes, but there was just enough wiggle-room left that the player could again fill in the blanks for themselves in order to enjoy the experience.

Not so with newer games. You receive the *exact* experience the developers want you to get and frankly, I'm just not compatible with those. And so jrpg's in general are just not to my liking at all, not the new ones at least.

And for all two people who read all that, my congratulations.

As much as I loved Fable 1, I have to say Fable 2 was so shallow and cut back that it would have worked better as an expansion than a full game... plus one can hardly say they were immersed as there wasn't much in the world to DO.

Septerra Core is among the dumbest I've played. Divine Divinity likewise was pretty pathetic; they rate among a short list of games I never finished.

The Madman:
(snip snip for brevity. Look at his post if you want to read it)

I'm of pretty much the same mind; the early JRPGs were more fun than the more recent ones. I've given up on the genre entirely now. Someone above didn't like Earthbound, but I'd recommend that one too. Even modern western RPGs (Fallout 3, Bioshock) are getting shallower, it seems, as if requiring any thought would alienate audiences.

Im going to have to say Oblivion... just wasn't my cup of tea.

Fallout 3

It's a great sleep-aid, though.

i agree with both of you.

BioShock, because the RPG claim was non-exsistant, or at least marginal.

In all seriousness, well, I actually enjoy all my RPG play history. Fable I guess was the stupidist. The controls were so confusing and the interface changes so much for every button press that I have up playing out of sheer lack of patience. Fable II was better though.

Gamer137:

No "In all seriousness" needed! It is, apparently, classed as an RPG. And I would have to completely agree with you; I think it was the stupidest RPG I've played, because I could barely find any RPG parts in it.

FF7 and The World Ends with You, god I hate the gameplay, story and characters in both of them.

Two Worlds. It was the true definition of a flaming pile of shit.

Question to the OP: Are we limiting this to computer RPGs or just RPGs?

EDIT: You know what: doesn't matter.

Computer RPGs: I honestly can't choose between Final Fantasy VIII and the Baldur's Gate 2 expansion Throne of Bhaal (BG 2 was good, the expansion not)

P&P: Elves of Mysteria. Shitty mechanics, ultra-stereotypical races and some many loopholes a lvl 1 mage could kill of a god with proper powergaming...

Two Worlds

i think i'll say final fantasy : renevant wings. i kind of got the storyline, despite missing the previous game, but the method of control to me was just really badly done.

i keep getting this thought that there is another, but i cant think what it is at the moment.

I quite liked TWEWY's gameplay, and it was a beautiful game to look at. But I agree on the characters - horrific. I've never wanted to punch the lights out of game characters before in my life.
