I was thinking the other day as most of you probably have wondered what's next for the Mario franchise?
I'm not sure if someone's thought of this before or not but here's my idea.
We play the entire game as Bowser. we start before Bowser is king and before he's napped the princess. you get to work your way up to being king of the koppas by a series of fun missions, eating people, bashing down buildings, leaning to play songs on the guitar like link and the ocarina. Then after your king and your introduced to the princess a story plays out telling why you want to steal the princess in the first place, haven't thought of one but it seems like a good idea to me. then you go through another series of missions, and in the end you fight mario kick his ass and steal the princess for the first time.
so what do you think? or what would make this idea better?
Customizeable levels a la LBP come to mind. Also, perhaps co-op play, with certain optional obstacles that con only be reached to two-to-four characters.
Hm, a GTA-inspired Bowser game would be cool, but an Assasin's Creed or Saint's Row 2-inspired game starring a customizable Koopa Troopa would be cool. Or a Mario MMORPG.

But what if you don't have another person? >_> For buisness, I think that they should just remake the first 3 original Mario games, or remake Super Mario All-Stars for the wii, with better graphics and a few new custom levels.
A new idea? No, that's way to radical for Nintendo!
Seriously though, I think the ideas above would work. Introducing Mario (and antagonist) to sandbox-type gameplay would be cool. To a point, of course.
an open world Mario sounds pretty cool, but surely thats been done throughout the franchise? I mean, you enter missions and stuff by jumping into paintings through a large open world in the last Mario I played... who knows though, maybe things have changed since then. that last Mario game, afterall, was Super Mario 64.
edit: how abouts Mario TPS? oh wait, Sunshine touched on that... ermmm... racing!...oh... erm...
oh! oh! I've got it! Mario RTS! (hey, Master Chief did it, why not Mario?)

You don't have to collect all of the stars. But, if you insist upon it, and are incredibly lonely, I suppose you could have control over all the characters, and you press a button to switch between them.
The Koopa Troopers are at war with the Mushroom Kingdom, nothing new so far. But this time, thge usual cast of Mario, Luigi, Bowser, ect. are out and you get to play as a Koopa Trooper armed with shells or a little Toad dude armed with, well, mushrooms or something I don't know. General Toadstool commands the Kingdom forces and Seargent Flutter from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars lead the hordes of Paratroopers. I'm thinking this could be a mix of a strategy game like Empire: Total War with an all-out laser fest game like Star Wars Battlefront.
