If you haven't heard already, Infinity Ward has released the information that there will be NO DEDICATED SERVERS and NO MODS for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. When it comes to computers, one of the most fundamental advantages a PC gamer has over a console gamer is the ability to mod or play mods. This can keep an old game fresh, bringing new and innovative ideas and gameplay to an otherwise stale/outdated game- just look at Half Life. This is something that Infinity Ward has taken away from the PC community. Addressing the lack of dedicated servers... really? I mean honestly, not only does this take away an essential part of the multiplayer experience that many PC gamers have come to love, but it also means that no clans can have their own servers. Now, I'm not big into the clan system, but I know there are a lot of people who are; clans = communities. Infinity Ward has basically taken away a vital part of the PC community.

Not to mention, there is no reason for not having dedicated servers, absolutely none at all. They've always had them in the past, it makes no sense to stop having them now, especially since there are more people than ever interested in Call of Duty and its multiplayer. If they axed the servers for more money that just goes to show how much they no longer care about the gamer.

If you agree with this then join me and (some others) in boycotting Modern Warfare 2.

By the way, this is in no way meant to blame console owners. After all, it's not your fault, it's IW's.

I knew boy-cotting would be the 'in' thing...

Anyway, I won't as I'm getting it on 360.

No. I'm going to get it because I like shooting things.
I could care less about dedicated servers, I just go online to shoot people instead of things.

Way ahead of you, I was already not going to buy it when I saw the gameplay footage.

You make a good point... however boycotts never work. Especially those started on the internet.

Come on guys, we jut got over the L4D2 boycott, do we really have to do this? I understand this is a major thing for PC gamers, but really? I'm kind of glad to see that this thread isn't going anywhere.

No, boycotts without good reason never work, like Left 4 Dead 2. I mean, it's one thing for a studio to change how they operate, but it's another for a studio to stop dedicated servers, especially for such a multiplayer focused game as MW2

Yes I'm going to be annoyed at joining multiplayer games, but the single player is a big reason I'm buying this game. Of course, it is not like MW2 has any fancy new gameplay mechanics, it'll be your standard FPS fare in that regard, but the atmosphere and set piece of the first game made it worth the purchase without multiplayer.

So no boycott from me.

I wouldīnt dream of it.
Partly because I donīt care all that much about the multiplayer part anyway.
But mostly itīs because I feel that telling other people what they can, and cannot like, is the pinnacle of dickiness...

Listen, boycotting is nice but if you really want to attempt to see some result you need something bigger. It is important to speak with your wallets but you also have to speak with your words and how important their decision is a bad decision.

Just like in politics there is a ladder that determines the amount of attention that should be given.

First there are petitions. More or less meaningless because the claim although have a ton of supporters don't really carry the weight because they only need to debunk the primary claim and then move one. Doesn't matter whether online or offline those petitions suck.

Second is boycotts, which are always needed because consumers need to speak with their wallets. Good for building a platform and community and it is here where the members can take practical action.

Third and the most effective are letter writing campaigns. Formal business letters directed at the individual from all members of the boycott explaining with a respectful tone and with their own words on the why IW's decision is a bad business decision. These letters must be typed and have a hand signature demonstrating how important the issue is.

It is going to be very hard to get a entire community(both xbox and PC, you need to reach out to both communities) to get onboard because of how close the game is already set to come out. Also remember that those gamers that have been playing games since Atari and have video games as our main hobby are the minority, but a good letter writing campaign is very powerful on changing people's minds.

P.S. I never liked the Call of Duty series or many FPS games.

I don't remember telling people what to and what not to like, but I do remember saying that IF you agree then boycott with me

Oh, how petty of all you PC gamers. You've had it too good for too long.

Or, more logically, removing dedicated servers might be some sort of cost-cutting measure. After all, this is an economic recession, and Activision/Infinity Ward are businesses as surely as PC gamers are not.

EDIT: Since I've received a lot of flak for the above paragraph, I acknowledge how ill-informed it is. However, there's got to be some cost benefit to removing dedicated servers on the PC. That's the only reason I can think of for why they'd cut it.

I feel pretty bad for the PC gamers lately, with their increased price, pushed-back release date, and lack of dedicated servers. Days like this I like being a console gamer.

I was saddened to hear that there would be no mods and dedicated servers, but it will not prevent me from purchasing the game. I want the SP mode anyway, and matchmaking is okay, as long as it works. So, no boycott for me. Sorry mate, I think you have failed in getting "one of the most powerful forces in society." behind your boycott.

I don't get this without a dedicated server how can they prevent user made mods when they can't even stop pirates cracking the protection systems

I started boycotting when they said they were charging more for the European version. I'll just throw that in as another reason.

Really? Really? That's what you're complaining about? If it matters so much to you, don't get the game and play the Half-Life mods, but trying to start a boycott that will do absolutely nothing is a waste of your time and ours.

A. I wasn't going to buy it anyway.

B. They didn't kill servers "for money", they did it "to equalize all the platforms" in order to appease an angry mob of PS3 owners (News story on the Escapist somewhere).

C. They're reconsidering the move, due to angry mobs of PC gamers.

Do your research a bit more carefully.

No. You think this will be EFFECTIVE?

Oh, IW will be so angry that about 10 random people on the internet have had a 'nerd raeg' and refuse to buy their game?

Ooooh, that'll kill their company!

Just STFU. Noone likes boycotts, they don't work, they annoy people and the people who do them don't understand that what they're doing is wonderfully innefectual.

Sorry PC fans. I've been getting into PC gaming myself and really enjoying the benefits (mods, internet, upgradable hardware). I still find myself a console gamer at heart though and will probably get the 360 version of this if I do plan to get. My PC probably isn't a bad enough dude to handle the game anyway.

You do know that's it's not IW/Activision who keeps the server running.
You do know that servers can cost from $50 to $100 per month to keep them running.

You have Chinese manufacturing on your side?

Seriously, it was funny for a while, yes, yes, PC gamers think they're so much better than console gamers because Yahtzee said it once in one of his reviews, but enough's enough. PC Gamers and Console Gamers are both GAMERS, and NEITHER is better than the other. You can still have private game rooms, there's a party function, this will change nothing for anyone, and it's just getting sad now.

Please, for the sake of making all gamers everywhere look better, drop it.

Oh another boycott, more needy crying brats throwing a tizzy because they aren't getting what they want.

OT: That is too bad though, oh well, PC games are still going to be around for a long time and will always have one up on consoles.

Tis the season to boycott things
la la lalala la la lala
Think developers give a craaaap
ch la lalala la la lala
You think you're smart
You think you're cool
But in reality
you're just a toooooool
For the love of God stop all the boycotting
Cause all you do is cause drama and inner fighting....

Really people stop the drama because we all know you will still get the game even with the "boycott".

I guess I am boycotting the moment I heard of there will be no dedicated servers, but it wasn't for the sake of boycotting, I just didn't want it anymore.

My own clan has canceled all their pre-orders on this game because of the no dedicated servers. Not to mention our leader is really big into modding, which now is out of the question. There really is no point in buying it now with the 60 dollar price tag on a PC game, not after the original content put into it by Infinity Ward becomes boring after the first few games. I guess innovation really isn't valued anymore. But why complain there, when my clan can't have a server to bring in new people to hang around and have fun, where we decide what maps and mods to play and control how the servers are run, which ultimately leads to a more creative gaming atmosphere where players have the choice of who to play with and where to play. Match-making, yipee! I could care less if the players out skill me or are below me. To me, having dedicated servers was a way you could consistently play with enjoyable players without having to be focused completely on the game itself. I really would have thought Infinity Ward could have seen this would be a disliked decision by a large portion of players. Not to mention all the "New" content they've added in MW2 has been playable on modded servers on CoD 4 for months now. If only console gamers knew what they were missing..

Ummm, hate to burst your bubble (not really, I'm actually enjoying this), but a lot more than 10 people have boycotted/ canceled their pre-orders over this. It's actually more like a hundred thousand.(http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?dedis4mw) So no, you STFU. Or at least have enough decency to back up your statements with facts. And for the record I'm not totally against the matchmaking system, but i think it'd be better if it was paired with a server browser.

In the new system Activision can now charge PC players for DLC content where is was free, but delayed, before. Presumably, if a clan wants to rent a server they will be paying Activision for a private server rather than a GSP (complete speculation on my part). So the short of it that Activision will be getting more money going to them. Thus, the general idea that Activision did it for the benjamins.

Good point about the servers; I wasn't actually sure how dedicated servers worked.

Jealousy? Not really. More irritation at the élitism of some PC gamers than anything else.
