I say Guitar Hero 2 had very awesome soundtrack, Megadeth, Buckethead, Anthrax and Freezepop. And I'll be the one only one saying this, Simcity 4 has a good soundtrack as well, too bad it's so underappreciated.

Fallout 3, gotta love Galaxy News Radio. I don't know what it is about Ella Fitzgerald's voice that makes me want to dismember things with the Power Fist.

Gotta go with Silent Hill 1. THE BEST IN THE SERIES.

Also, Jet-Set-Radio Future. Hit the nail on the head? Yeah go listen to it if you heard it already.

One more: Dissidia on PSP. Incorporated most of the best Final Fantasy music including 'One Winged Angel', my personal favorite.

No questions... These are the best.

Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time, both Max Payne games, Silent Hill. The Borderlands soundtrack is really good too.

Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits had one adrenaline rushing soundtrack when it came to battles. Along with MGS, SH and Halo 2/3's intro.

Here's a blast from the past for you polygonal punks; the original C&C. Mechanical man.

Also, the intro songs to Morrowind and Oblivion were pretty sweet.

I have always loved the Civilization IV medley.
The soundtrack that starts at the menu when you start the game

I think stating something like GTA or Guitar Hero is sorta cheating.

Especially Fallout 3 since they're, you know, REAL SONGS, aside from the instrumental pieces around the wasteland when your radio's off, but I'm sure most people turned them off because it was similar enough to oblivion without having similar music...xD

Anyway, I would have to go with either Command and Conquer, all of the music being done by Frank Klepacki, an inddustrial rock composer... or...

Total Annihilation (though Supreme Commander's has grown on me as well.)

Actually, anything by Jeremy Soule is EXTREMELY good. He did the soundtracks to both TA and SupCom, as well as Morrowind, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, and much much more...Prey, Icewind Dale, Unreal II, Dungeon Siege II, and a bunch of stuff I'm forgetting. He's really a great composer.

That said, the Mechwarrior 2 soundtrack is really awesome too, since I recently rediscovered it, but...Oddly enough, I think my real answer here is Unreal Tournament.

From the menu, to Hyperblast, to the hall of champions, it had some of the best fast-paced music for an arena FPS I've ever heard. It blends trance and rock into some weird genre of electronica that I had never heard before until I played the game, and so much of the music is simply badass.

edit: EXTREMELY honorable mentions to Braid and Trine. Braid especially since I listened to and want to purchase Shira Kammen's album after hearing her music in the game.

The music of gta, portal, bioschock and half-life was great.
Bioschock=welcome to rapture
gta=gta 3 main theme
portal=4000 degrees kelvin
and half-life=...no idea

Majora's Mask, and to a lesser degree all other Zelda games. Mario 64 had some okay songs too. I have actually considered having the final song of Portal on my MP3 player.

I generally turn the music off at the earliest opportunity, like during setup before even launching the game.

I have thus had rather limited experience.

From my rather limited experience, I choose:

You don't even have to be on methampthetamine, ecstasy and LSD to enjoy it. Of course, any big fans of Brahms's Cello Sonata in F might give you funny looks partway through.

Shadow of the Colossus, wonderful soundtrack in my opinion.

Agreed.

There are a lot of games with great soundtracks: MGS, Halo, Armored Core, LoZ:OoT, FF to name but a few. But SotC takes the crown, definitely.

The soundtrack of HoMM 4 is pretty nice.
Serious Sam First Encounter and Second Encounter have awesome fighting music.
For Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IecLO8uBByE
I also like the Neverwinter Nights Theme:

All the Bioware games have had excellent soundtracks. I love the main theme from Baldur's Gate 2 so much.

Rosenkreuzstilette - Atmospheric Lovely Awesome.

I couldn't believe that Doujinshi games could have such excellent pieces of music.

Runners up would be Devil May Cry 3, Chrono Trigger and EarthBound.

There are a lot. But for sheer catchiness (and the fact that it probably hasn't been mentioned yet. I'm original, dammit!), I give it to Let's Tap for the Wii. Just listen to his intro:

I really liked the Brutal Legend soundtrack, even though i haven't actually PLAYED the game, just watched about half an hour of someone playing through it. I also really liked the soundtrck to Croc on the PSX.
