There is the thread originally telling me that IW, in their fuckhead wisdom, decided to have all party chat disabled during every game mode in multiplayer but Free-for-all, Mercenary Team Deathmatch and Third Person Teams. I'm not sure what that last one is either.
I was actually outraged. Not because of any great betrayal of IW but just in general. I log in to XBL and immediately join my friends in a party. Talking to my friends while playing is the staple of my entire gaming career. By myself I just don't feel right. I also love Call of Duty's MP. I've been playing CoD4/CoD : WaW for over a year now in MP and I've been awaiting MW2's MP for so long, I will be the happiest guy on Earth when I open that plastic wrapping.
I will be playing the multiplayer for a decade at least, and I can't do it with my friends? I can't use the main social function of my 360 at all? XBL is by far the worst playerbase in the history of videogaming. Nowhere else in the globe will you find such a dense mob of drooling morons, driven by anonymity, stupidity and the sugar they down to increase their reaction time with the sensitivity on high. Speak but a word and you'd be confronted with racism, stupidism and the rantings of tools. I don't care for hearing xX_5n1iP3R ll KiiL4 Xx tell me about his sex life, or what he thinks of my accent. Nor do I want to hear ooxAsSaSsiiN187654xxX inform me of his views on black people in supermarkets.
So I play against these imbeciles, my teeth grating every second that they ruined what would be a fun experience for me just enjoying the game in the company of fine, intelligent and humourous people. I revel in the joys of killing someone and then hearing someone tell me a funny story about a cow, or hearing the exploits of my gaming chums in their respective games.
And Infinity Ward, in an attempt to quell "cheating", that never actually happens, by barring millions, possibly tens of millions judging by CoD4's success, with their right to ignore fucktards and speak to friends. Or, in the reflection, the fucktards to ignore the clever people and make "ur mooom" jokes to their stupid friends in peace and harmony amongst all.

I paid for the fun I'll get playing Spec Ops with Birras, and playing the Single Player in awe and esteem. I paid for the Multiplayer too. Why ruin it?

Furthermore, you can still mute the people you don't wish to listen to. It's really not going to be all that different. The only real impact is that you can't talk to people not playing MW2 while you're playing it - good, that should help your concentration.

That's a very big difference. Plus, muting requires you to find the guy in the screen and muting him. Not very long, only a few seconds, but an unnecessary hassle, just because I can't talk to my friends who haven't bought the game, haven't bought the game yet, or are playing something else or are just not in my exact game, on my team.

I will only be online on this game, in a team, with my friends.somebody that doesent have this luxury can enjoy not using the party system, and find other people who dont have any friends on. The issue is pretty ridiculous and the OP raises some good point all of which I agree with. If they had this "ban on party chat" as an option in a private lobby for clans I would have been happy, but to force people away from something they pay for, for the sake of one gametype that a minority abuse...is ludicrous.
There are no alternatives! Someone should really invent a means for a team to speak with one another.

I can understand it if you and members of your party are placed in different teams so that you can't betray your non-party team members in order to help your mates out...but if you're on the same team, then it's just ridiculous.
I'm highly suspicious about this and feel like people are just jumping on anything that is revealed to have changed since COD4 and blowing it out of all proportion.
So, I am taking all "OMG! IW are ruining the game!!" alleged facts with huge mountains of salt and will just see for myself next Tuesday.

I'm elitist when it comes to gamertags, but that's because I'm generally right.

Sorry to burst your bubble there, but it literally is a pop-up saying - "You cannot play while in a party. Leave the party now?" In slightly more words.
You cannot be in any party at all as long as you are in any game modes other than those three.
I have mixed opinions on the subject. As much as this will irritate some I feel that the use of in-game chat gives a definate advantage over those that do not use it. Technically everyone on XBL should have a microphone, but pre-made parties of friends wind up with an advantage over a random Pickup group of players due to the chat, even more than they would otherwise.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the issues here, but I can see it from a lot of differant perspectives.

I'm also not sure, but if your suggesting that you should be able to "avoid" people you don't want to play with on XBL, that's one of the features I feel needs to be killed and killed hard. In theory that abillity exists to avoid people that you find obnoxious and ruin your enjoyment of games, however in reality people tend to use it to avoid players that they don't want to be challenged by. Beat some dude in Street Fighter IV, or Blaz Blue, or Soul Calibur IV, or any one of many games and they can report you for "poor sportsmanship" and put you on an avoid list. A lot of people do it to up their rankings, and I find it annoying when nearly every time I win a match I get a complaint against me.
Yes, fighting games and FPS games are differant, but the point is that XBL uses universal mechanics for everyone involved (at least here) so the same rules that apply to a ranked fighting game, also have to apply to FPS.

My system has its flaws, namely when I identify people like you as a common idiot mistakenly, but as a defence it works surprisingly well.
