Just played the demo and I have to admit I wasn't all that impressed.

This is coming from a huge Valve fan, by the way.

The gameplay was nothing new, felt just like the first one with the lights turned on.

Now I know graphics are not the most important part of a game, but man Valve need to either update or replace the Source engine.

The game looks like shit.

The buildings and character models are horrible, angular last gen atrocities that would look more at home in GTA San Andreas than on a 2009 mainstream release.

Objects are blocky and have no shadows, lighting effects look dated and blurry.

The very first vista was a badly implanted endless sea with an almost blank horizon. Half Life 2 had better graphic than this.

Animations and sounds are still very good, and the guns feel about right. The characters seem a bit more interesting than the last bunch too. The music was very cool and jazzy and helped with the setting.

But all in all I found the experience pretty underwhelming and won't be forking out my cash for it.

Especially not after playing Borderlands. Aussie friends, you're not missing all that much.

Anyone love it? Hate it? Feel indifferent to it?

Edit:

I forgot to mention the best thing about it: Mike Patton rocks.

I loved every second.
It was gory, fun, and I got to blast at zombies.
Sadly, I do not have the money to spare for it, so I have to pass at this time...sigh.

And I do not know where you're finding issues with the graphics...I played it on the default settings and it still looked markedly better than the first game when I played it on high.

To be perfectly honest I really didn't like the L4D2 demo, and may well cancel my pre-order until I can play the full game elsewhere and decide on it...

The atmosphere is non-existent, the "fun-factor" just isn't there, the presentation no longer gritty and the gore childish and overdone....

I liked it a lot. Killing zombies= fun times.

My only complaint is that it took forever to download.

What's wrong with the game not being gritty? I wasn't aware that every game needed to be dark and gritty to have good atmosphere.

I completely disagree. I'm not even running the game on the highest setting and I still think it looks great. Especially the character models. Valve put a lot of detail into them.

I completely agree 110%.
I was actually quite impressed with the graphics, since the engine hasn't seen an update in years, and it holds up fairly well. It is definitely in my Top 3 list of games to buy ASAP (Borderlands, MW2, L4D2)

I think that it came up with "WINDOWS DRIVERS NOT UP TO DATE." After updating my drivers, it came up with the same message, then Steam crashed. I also think that I can't be arsed to go through to our games room to check if it's on the 360, so will someone PM me when it comes out on the PS3? I want to ensure that Hell is freezing over nicely.

They released a patch for that last night, I had the same problem, but the steam update fixed it.

I just downloaded it and it's great, played it through and the melee weapons work great. My favourite is the machete.

I played on the 360 and I had fun when it wasn't laggy as shit and my teammates weren't dumb as bricks.

The source engine does look outdated compare to a lot games right now(or even back 4 years ago)

I love the melee weapons and new guns are also great

"Terrible graphics"? Are you sure you and I played the same game? I played it on my 360 and I thought it looked remarkably better than the first one.

As for the gameplay, I thought it was pretty well done. I don't know why, but it actually kept me interested all the way through to the end, unlike the first one, which for some reason I can never bring myself to play anymore because I just end up becoming extremely bored.

Fucking love it to tiny fragments.

I want it so bad I'm considering getting my Xbox chipped to get it earlier. I love Ellis :)

The look is very fresh, long has it been since i played an FPS where i had real daylight without the old coffie filter.

Sure its not bring anything "new" to the table but the graphics are still great regardless of the age of source and still better then some new games, the melee weapons don't really provide an improvment but there sure as hell fun and usfull when trapped in the middle of the undead protest.

tbh i liked it

The melee weapons looked shotty at first, but once i picked up the machete, i never looked back. I have to say i was impressed.

Although, it took me half an hour to figure out how to turn off the alarm. I mean wtf? The ladder was back around the corner, it confounded me for the longest time.

Oh and the new special infected are GREAT.

Did anyone else find the desert eagle? That was bitchin.

To be honest, I'm amazed at this - it sounds as if you have bad settings or a computer problem. Maybe you need to update your driver? Or check your settings in the L4D2 menu...

Indeed - I've loved it so far too; though I've already pre-ordered it.

Not trying to insult you, but how did you not realize the switch was in the tower when the survivors keep yelling "GET TO THE TOWER!!!!"?

Also, the new special infected are awesome. The Spitter and Charger are so much fun to play as.

Really? I restarted steam after the update and it seemed to work for me. Make sure that your steam is up-to-date. Otherwise, just launch the game anyway.

I pre-purchased it on the premise that it's L4D with all the bells and whistles that the original was missing (and because i didn't buy the first one.
Graphics wise the game's ok. Nothing new but not as bad as the OP makes it look.
The real drawback of the demo was that it wasn't showing the intriguing parts of the gameplay. Like the infected VS. survivor modes or the "fuel the generator" gameplay with it's hectic twists.
Also, they gave me a sweet hat on TF2 for pre-ordering it.

I'm not so stupid i didn't know where it was. Geeez. I couldn't figure out how to get up there. The ladder was back in the maze. And i spent most of my time machete-ing my way through hordes.

And yes, the infected are great. And i love the semi-special infected. The guy in the armor was just cool. Couldn't kill him with a machete though....

Well I just played the demo and I have to disagree with some statements, like that objects are blocky and have no shadows? What version are you playing? Also it's a sequal, where they improve on the original game. Left 4 Dead is the same as Left 4 Dead 2 in the same way that Half-Life is the same as Half-Life 2. Same basic game, but with new graphics, levels, story and so on. Left 4 Dead 2 is like that with more weapons and choices, a different story and the game is now more balanced with the new Special Infected which complement each other well along with the level specific Uncommon Infected. The Melee weapons are powerful, but have no range which keeps the balance instead of having a pistol. The new weapons are basic, but they work which is probably the most important part. I liked Left 4 Dead, but this looks and feels better already. Also the demo misses a lot off, like the Incendiary and Explosive ammo, the grenade launcher and other weapons and probably better levels in the actual whole game instead of the DEMO.

Yes, I am sure. The first one looked pretty bad too, though due to being mainly in darkness the flaws weren't as glaringly obvious.

You can see the texture separations on the Tank and other character models from 20 or 30 yards away. They're horrible.

The houses look like dolls houses.

It's like everything in the world was built from giant Lego polygons from 2004.

For a perfect example, go to the first saferoom and look at the shelves. Ugh.

I still maintain, Mike Patton was the best thing about this demo.

Demos are meant to be a way to experience the best the game has to offer, so people will then go and buy it.

They should function as well as the finished game.

Stop playing it on an old toaster.

The only thing I dislike about it is the lack of dynamic lightning/shadows. But considering each of the 4 characters is a constantly and quickly moving source of lightning nearly all the time, I get the feeling this would murder most computers and 360s. Specially considering the source engine isn't at it's best with dynamic lightning.

This. There's something sooo satisfying about killing loads of zombie with nothing but a guitar. It has a much better feel to it than L4D 1

Played the demo last night and was quite impressed, I can't say from a PC point of view but it is a rather big improvement from last year on the 360. My friend say he didn't like how often the horde came, one thing i didn't like were the armored zombies, but they won't be so bad with good teammates. zombies are quite impressive, actually nice to see multiple version of the same one, smoker looks great. Music is a hit or miss, the horde drum-solo is fantastic. I see the the spitter a little too cheap as most of the levels were confined and no one wants to run through acid. Sadly I fear the charger more than the tank, that fucker scared the shit out of me every time i seen him. the melee weapons are great as they do ignore the stamina, machete comes out a little to powerful compare to the other melee though. I say its great

I thought the graphics looked great, the old girl, (Source,) still has a few games in her yet. I mean yeah, it's not top-of-the-line but it's certainly good enough to keep the emersion factor alive without causing your PC to spazz out.
