Well it's probably going to end up like that.
I havent seen a good one since Final fantasy 10. look forward to 13 next year :D
Well this is a waste of a thread. If you do not like the genre then nothing we say can change your mind.
Has Tales of Symphonia came out in the last 9 years? If it did, I strongly suggest that one, extremely fun, and a good combat system
Ever played any game from the SMT series? Those games are great.
FINAL FANTASY VII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (jaja) no, really?? i think there is none out there, or at least that i have heard of, al FF are the samey, and lately JRPGS are suffering because the vast worlds Western RPG“s have brought with them
The DS remake of Chrono Trigger is pretty damn good, although that might not count as the original came out in 1995. I thought FF12 was ok.
Final Fantasy 12 was alright characters aren't too great best ones are Balthier Basc and Gabranth others seem very lack luster and bog standard.
Persona 3 and 4 were great. Once you get used to how they are, they are excellent. I recommend both, highly.
While I agree about the combat being fun, if you want a JRPG that is not annoying then avoid Tales of Symphonia like the fucking plague. I'd say Mother 3 is a good JRPG. To bad you have to torrent it.
Yeah, ok, Avy got there first and said it ten times better than I did.
Does the Final fantasy tatics remake for the PSP count?
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
*chuckles* I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree. I didn't find it annoying in the slightest...Wait, unless you're counting the half text and half voiced over parts. I hated that!
It's only my opinion but I liked Lost Odyssey, and even Last Remnant a bit. They might not be as great as the heady heights of FFIX (My personal favourite) But Lost Odyssey is still everything I love about them, so no complaints.
This is opinion based anyway, so there will be people that say: "Annoying? What on earth is this fellow talking about?" Personally, I hate JRPG's, and have done for a good nine years.
It depends on what annoying means. I found the last remnant to have quite tolerable, even likeable in some cases, characters. Most JRPGs have me laughing at the inherent idiocy and cliche character archetypes every character ascribes to. Also, if you mean in terms of gameplay, I don't really know what to tell you as I don't particularly find the gameplay to be annoying. It sure can frustrate at points, but I don't think I've had a JRPG annoy me.
Devil Survivor for DS. Far from your usual JRPG, but still awesome.
I agree with this guy Lost Odyssey was pretty sweet, though I couldn't get into Last Remmant, I tryed but the combat system was a massive pile of deal breakage for me.
"The World Ends with You" for the Nintendo DS is an original JRPG that--while having some cliche bits here and there, is pretty good for someone that usually get's annoyed with JRPGs (like me). If you like roguelike or dungeon crawler games than the two "Izuna" games are something to consider.
Golden Sun, didn't that come out within the last nine years? I liked that JRPG and it was for the GBA.
I can handle the gameplay as long as the story draws me in most jrpg to are just like you said cliche
Try the Persona games. They seem to be generally revered as the shining beacons of the genre currently, although I'm yet to play them. They at least have a unique premise and deviate from the usual epic fantasy quests the genre used to specialise in. If you still aren't interested, there's sure to be plenty of good old ones that you've overlooked. Xenogears (The Neon Genesis Evangelion of JRPGS), Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Shadow Hearts, Tales of..., Terranigimi, Earthbound, Mario RPGs, Baiten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon Saga. The list goes on and on. And if still in doubt, just google "best JRPG ever" or some such term and sift through the forum results for something that sounds appealing. I haven't heard anything that special about the current gen's selection of JRPGs, so that's why all my recommendations are quite old.
The biggest problem with the combat system is it does things but never bloody tells you why. For instance, if I target one group of monsters I can order a variety of commands, however if I target another one, some of the moves will be different or missing. Why is that? The game never tells you.
All Three Paper Marios are good. I've heard good things about Valkyria Chronicles (I've only played the demo as of yet). The Tales series is pretty good, all things considered, though
pretty much sums it up. You have to appreciate the changes it makes to things, otherwise it's not so good (speaking as a fan). And to the latter, I quite agree. Very good RPG, no matter the region.
So True. Found the Wii version better because it was all Voiced, so there was at least some hilarious dialogue to listen to, and not just text bubbles to read as if they were comics.
Golden Sun was finished with its sequel.
...so? | |
any of the persona games. nuff said.
Wait a sec, did you get the orginal or Dawn of the New World?
Erm...Dawn? Maybe? The one with Richter and Ameil(sp?) and Ratatosk (and that so sounds like a Pokemon). That's the only one for the Wii I've seen--but you say the original one?
i never really like jrpgs at all ...until i discovered persona 3 that is
I think he thought you meant golden sun as a series was never completed.
Persona sounds interesting
The combat did suck in ways, but I never got killed unnecessarily because of it, and I could usually judge whether I was going to win a battle or not, and avoid it if I wasn't, which is all I really want from it.

I'm just asking because when I was a kid the only rpgs out their were from japan, but it just seems that lately they have been getting lamer and more annoying. I'm not trying to start a fight just give me an example of a newer on that is fun and has a good story.
