Uncharted 2. The two stories are pretty separate, so you can enjoy it without missing out on any information.
I'm gonna go against the expected curve. Metal Gear Solid. Kind of a cop out, since the game explains the backstory anyway.
The Persona games. If you don't play the earlier ones, you'll just miss some references.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was fun, regardless. Pretty easy to pick up what's going on too. I played the Crash Bandicoot games (the original 3) backwards, but that doesn't really count, since it's so easy to catch up.
World or Warcraft, although it pisses some people off if you haven't at least played Warcraft 3, That is if you try talking about lore.
Pretty much anything that isn't MGS.
You damn ninja! I was going to say the same thing!
Dynasty Warriors/Tactics the games story resets in each sequel, well, it's more a upgrade. Fallout 3, but that was obvious as I'd say 90% of the people who played it haven't played 1 and 2, myself included. Dino Crisis each game is separate. I want them to remake Dino Crisis 2 *cries*
The Call of Duty games, but I guess they don't really count since they didn't follow a story (except the upcoming MW2).
Star ocean 2 has small traces of the story of the first in the beginning but even then u understand it completly.
f.e.a.r 2 | |
Any multiplayer-exclusive title, mainly because they have no plot. Also, almost anything Japanese, because their plots make no sense whatsoever.
Sonic, Mario, Metroid, Disgaea, Ace Combat, Red Faction, Armored Core, Sparkster, Breath of Fire? There's a lot of series that are interchangeable honestly because the story is either non-exisitant or simply non-conflicting with other titles.
The Legend of Zelda. Similar themes and characters repeat, but you can pretty much play them in any order... Although that's also kind of the downside to the games too, since they spend a lot of time covering the exact same ground.
I played Saints Row 2 before the original.
What sequels can't you play without playing the first?
Final Fantasy! I never played the first one, and I still enjoyed the "sequels"
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.
The Wild Arms series, they all take place in the very unlucky land of Filgaia but the stories are fairly separate. Also FF for the most part but that goes without saying. The Tales series has a few direct sequels like FF but you can jump around the series fairly easily.
Metal Gear Solid 4....wait no, that is the exact opposite. I had no idea WTF was going on. Lets see...Fight Night Round 3. There is no story!
Killzone 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Tom Clancy GRAW 2, Resident evil 5, Assassin's creed 2, FEAR 2 (in my opinion), Oblivion (but, seriously... why on Earth would you want to?)
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 | |
That's true one of my guild mates got pissed just cause i never played any of the other warcraft games. Needless to say i never healed for any of his daily heroics
Dark Cloud 2 which has nothing important to do with the original game.
Phoenix Wright series. Although you'll have gaps in the story...
Uncharted 2. I have yet to play it, but I have heard that you can understand it without playing the first. Also, I played Kingdom Hearts 2 before playing Kingdom Hearts 1. I still understood it, bt after playing KH1 and then playing KH2 again, it made alot more sense.
I can easily play Hitman: Blood Money without playing Contracts.
Resident Evil 4 However, I'm not one to really play games out of order (most of the time). So while you could play any of these games without playing the previous ones, I always suggest you play the first one(s) first anyways. x3 Makes the sequels better.
Half-life 2. I played Half-Life on PS2, and unless the PC version had a magic "add story" option on the main menu, you dint need to play the original to enjoy HL2.
Pokemon, Sonic, LoZ stuff like that.
Silent Hill 4, Fallout 3, Call of Duty 4,Resident Evil 4, Dragon Warrior 3 to name a few.
Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. The game happens at pretty exactly the same time as the first one and the plots intertwine a little bit to link it to Rainbow 6 Vegas, but not to alienate new players. The Splinter Cell series. The games make minor references to previous games, but you can use your imagination to fill in any blanks
I'm not saying can't I'm saying what game would you be confused or have less/not understand that you're missing plot and therefore not enjoy it.
Well you can't say exactly Creed two mostly I'm sure but it's now out so there's no guarantee.
Mario! | |

I have a habit of skipping games that I don't really care about the entire story line. My list of game I played without playing the first are Fallout 3, Fable 2 Resident Evil 4 (I played 5) Samurai Warriors Two Call of Duty 3 and GTA 4- and that's just this gen (not including RE4).
So I want to know game you can or have played out of sequence. Now that I've played the first I'm thinking of buying Fable 1, so also state whether or not the games are still fun without playing the first.
