Every FPS from world war 2 is always about the Brits, the Americans and the Russians, over and over and over again. I think we need to start making Axis FPS.
Oh, wouldn't THAT be a load of controversy. Sorry, but I can't see the media going to easy on a game where you're killing the "good guys", and possibly jews as well. Of course there is that certain scene in MW2 which is a small equivalence *cough cough*
It would be fun I guess, but I'm a little tired of WWII games now TBH...
I personally would love to see a WWII FPS where you played as a German soldier in the actual single player campaign, instead of only in the multiplayer like most WWII FPS games. I wouldn't mind even seeing a game that took place in an alternative reality where the Germans won, as well.
The new Red Orchestra game will feature a German campaign. I believe it's going to be called Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad but release date and platform haven't been announced yet. But Tripwire Interactive has always been pretty cool so...
I've always wondered if a German point of view WW2 shooter would work I mean it certainly would be different and it could work with a good story. But like a few others I'm kind of burned out on WW2 games right now. The next and maybe last WW2 era game I may buy is going to be the "Saboteur" but this idea has at lease peaked my interest somewhat.
How about we just drop the world war nazi thing. It's over done. can't someone think of an army game that doesn't have nazi's in it? or nazi zombies for that matter?
As tiring as it is to play as Americans, Brits, and Russians (have there been any Canada-centric or Australia-centric World War II games yet?) over and over, it's really the only way to do it. The Italians were pretty much useless, being more under-equipped than the Brits were, and only gained ground in North Africa because they surprised the Brits, so an Italian-centric game is way out of the question. The Japanese, while powerful, were only so because they invented the Zerg Rush, mindlessly sacrificing many of their own for no apparent reason. Sure, they captured Korea, China, most of the Pacific Islands, Thailand, Burma, Vietnam, etc. but that was mostly BEFORE 1939, and NOBODY was ready for them. Once people got their shit together (See: Kokoda Trail) the Japanese were on the road to failure, especially after the US sent their Pacific Bitch Slap (The USS Enterprise) at them, and had really crappy weapons compared to the Allies (better than Italy, but still shit), so they are out as well. This leaves Germany as the only major Axis, and it is 100% impossible to do a Nazi-centric World War II game because of 5 major things: 1. They lost. 2. Can't really have a Nazi-centric game without the various Nazi crap, like Hitler, so there goes ANYONE IN GERMANY being able to play it (legally), and would probably be banned in Israel. 3. Alternate History? Get ready to be crushed under the anger of millions of people (especially Israel). 4. (Depending on time period) Steamroll over tiny little countries and France, get slaughtered in Russia, play Front Lines Pong in North Africa with the British, or get shot in the face in France. Take your pick. Either way, pretty fucking boring. 5. Navy? What navy? Bismark was useless, Tirpitz was useless, U-Boats were only effective for about 2 years (and spent most of that time going from France to the Atlantic and back), and had basically shit all otherwise. So not only would a Nazi-centric World War II game be banned in Germany (and probably Israel), but it would also being really fucking boring.
The truth is it probably wouldn't sell. It's illegal to put Nazi iconography in games in Germany anyway, so there goes an entire market, and most people wouldn't like the idea of playing the 'villains'.
In Brothers In Arms Earned In Blood during the quick battles or whatveer they were, you could play as a German squad, I think he even shouted orders in German. It would work well, especially if it was done by GearBox (Brothers In Arms). Though like the others have said it wouldnt sell well. I would buy it but youcan see alot of people wont. So many people bitched about the Nazi campaign in Hearts of Iron 3.

I say yes, and I'm going to go ahead and do a point by point rebuttal here because a) I'm sleep derived and b) consequently my judgment is impaired. Here we go: 1. Yes, they lost, but they won a lot too before they lost. Will return to this in 4. 2. You could focus on a career soldier that was in the Reichswehr from before the Nazi take over. Lots of the professional soldiers in Germany didn't support the Nazis at heart, but played along because they thought they could get the better of Hitler. In fact, there could be some fantastic cut-scenes based on backroom negotiations between Wehrmacht generals. Obviously, you would have to have Nazi symbology, but cast it in a historical/sociological light. Plenty of WW2 games have had soviet rhetoric even though the soviet regime killed many more people than the Nazis did. And I doubt Germany and Israel make up a large share of a major publisher's market. 3. Alternate histories aren't really attractive, but it wouldn't hurt to have a last mission where you board a U-boat for Argentina. 4. You don't have to put the player in areas where they lost. Start him off in the Spanish Civil war, go to the invasion of France next, then N. Africa with Rommel before they get chased out, and then move him to Stalingrad, then out again before they get surrounded. You can show tactical victories and skip over the strategic losses. 5. Navy wise, a simple U-boat sim that could compete with COD's tank missions would be sufficient. You could, of course, insert a few Luftwaffe missions for kicks too.
Overall, don't focus on German the country, focus on the player's story, his victories in the face of certain death.
Ok, I'll admit it, the only reason I want this game to happen is so I can start a level with an MP44 and not have to search every single body on the battlefield for one.

Well, in some games you can, but would you honestly want to play a game where the only protagonist is a Nazi? That is sort of an oxymoron, come to think of it.

haha true, and speaking of the mp44, the germans had all kinds of state-of-the-art shit that the allies never had. would be interesting to use those.
how about a game where your trying to desert the German army?Sick of a war you don't wan't to fight anyway? trying to get home while avoiding nazi patroles?Hideing form gestapo officers? sounds ok to me(although i don't really play WWII games).

Not all the germans were nazis, the player would most likely be just a conscript fighting for his survival and the survival of his buddies.
A game about a German rebel working as a double agent for the Brits could probably work. You get to play as a Nazi without the moral problem of playing as a Nazi.

Yes, that is definitely going to make the game better. If you fight as a German rebel, then the game would be easier to swallow, but going around killing your grandpa and his pals really isn't a way to make game sales.
I reckon it's a great idea, make for a right proper - gritty - game... Provided you still lost at the end. Hell , you can die at the end. It could be awesome.

Its called Silent Hunter 1, 2, 3, 5. They just did an article on it this week. I just played it today (3) for the who knows how manyeth time? I must say, this is the best you can get!
Luftwaffe missions and the like are in the Microsoft WWII Air Combat Flight Simulator 1 and 3. Gl finding them though.
The only con I have against a German based WWII FPS is the backlash in the media, otherwise I'm all for it.
