With Left 4 Dead 2 being released Valve has been doing alot of hyping for it. Valve being one of my all time favorite gaming companies but with the release of all the extras for preordering L4D2 its starting to seem like they are going for money. Now this may be EA being the money hungry whores that they are but does anyone have any insight or information or just basic opinion (this is not for flaming about how L4D2 sucks and all that bullshit i want legitimate opinions and thoughtful points of views, not just douchers being douchers.)

Uhm......they are a business.
Businesses are set up to make money.
Otherwise they would be called a "non-profit organisation"

Isn't that only a problem for the console players?

If memory serves me right, all of these "extras" you speak of are free. You also get the game 10% for pre-ordering it so it looks like you're saving money.

Wait, what's that? Valve wants you to buy their game so they're putting out incentives? Greedy whores!

Well yes i understand they want to make money but for an example, Bungie would be and example of a whore who uses the license for there game to create a massive revenue and really cares nothing about there fan base. Valve has been known to care alot about there fans and not just try to make money but try to make games that they want and to take care of there massive fan base.

Oh dear, your god is succumbing to the fact that, despite their huge fanbase, they need to bring in more people to play their games in order to make more money!

The extras are free yes, but why would they need to put out incentives other than the game itself? Why pile on so many incentives to pre-order this game? Why not just let people pre-order because they want the game, not becuase they get Bill's hat in TF2?

They can't really make games for said fanbase if they don't have the money to do it. Hence, they market the game so more people will buy it and they have money to make more games. It's a very simple cycle.

By having many people pre-order their game the 10% discount means nothing in loss. The extras are not hard to add.

I do understand a business acually. there is a difference to making money and fucking over the fan base to make more money or pulling a Bungie. (Clearly i despise Bungie for whoreing out the Halo series.)

C'mon, while I get the OP's argument, it's quite flawed. A lot of companies are offering bonuses for buying their product when they want you to. It's up to you to decide if buying now or later is more worth it.

To top it all off, I'll give you a good counter-evidence to your so-called "selling out" evidence: Gamespot's pointlessly stupid character battle lead Valve to put up a sale on their Half-Life games because their character won. If you think they are sellouts, please name one other company that you think would even consider pulling a stunt like that if they had the means to. Do you think Nintendo would have made one, or all Virtual Console Mario games 53.8% off had they won instead? What if Master Chief won? Would MS discount anything Halo related? I just don't see anyone else doing that, because it means less of the almighty dollar for each of them.

Can I ask how?

OT: No, they're not selling out. As has been said, the extra content is free and they take money off of the price.

I despise Bungie for dragging the Halo series to its thinnest ropes and trying to score as much possible revenue for it.
And Signa i love Valve. I know they werent money hungry whores. They made some amazing things im just wondering of why so much for L4D2? Why all this hyping for that game when none of the others did?

But exactly how is giving people free extras for wanting their game so much that they pre-ordered it is "fucking over the fan base"? I just don't get it.

But the point is they made more money.
On the topic of the games industry, Some businesses listen to feedback and change things to suit their fans while others rely on the original following.
Either way you would either have fans of the first in the series bitching about them changing things and ruining the series or the other side of the coin where people call them sell outs and say they are ruining the series.
But from the point of view of making profit, both ways have advantages and disadvantages BUT both still make money.

So what's your point? They're offering pre-order bonuses to get as much people to play the game as possible so suddenly that means they don't care about its fans?? Can you not see the gaping hole that is the lack of any logic in what you're saying?

They're not dumbing the game down and/or rushing its development by cutting features to make more money, they're simply promoting it!

How much do you think it costs to develop a game anyway? If you had made one, wouldn't you want as much people as possible playing it to give you the funds to make more and better?

You're right, I think they need to take the activision route. They need to release Left 4 Dead 2 with 1 character, gun, bomb usable with only a few zombies, you need to buy gun pack 1 for US brand weapons, and zombie pack two to get more zombies, plus one free boss zombie! So L4D2's full content can be fully acquired for somewhere around $140.

They have been offering preorder items for a long time now, they want people to preorder so they know how much server space to dedicate upon release, and so they can predict sales. It is an incentive.

No, I'm well aware of what a business is. What I'm saying is that when said business starts screwing over it's primary consumer base in order to make more money, then they've become greedy douchebags, esp. when their profit margins are already in the billions anyway.

Can I point out one small thing?
Bungie had nothing to do with HW, MS took the licence and gave it to Ensemble Studios to make it. Bungie couldn't stop MS doing that, which was a shame.

I'm not sure on the book front as I don't read them. I liked Halo: ODST and I swear they have said Reach will be the last game under their control before MS takes it where they want it to go.

I'll leave you guys alone now, I've gone slightly off-topic.

i dont see the problem here, are you complaning that they didnt decide to make extention packs to go with the game, i mean if they were money whores they wouldnt have put out a l4d2 they would have made 4 or so, 1 mission extention packs that cost $10 each and then realeased L4D2. they are not madden who release a game with absolutly no change every year. they released a sequel to their original. good for business and for gamers

Valve has done plenty to make the world a better place... facial expression software to help development of perceptive skills in autistic children, American Sign Language expression in graphical systems... selling the Orange Box at the same price as a single Triple-A title...

I'm more than willing to let them get away with at least one GameStop in-game item promotion.

Am I missing something, I just don't see how offering a free hat is selling out the player base and becoming an evil company full of money hungry corporate sharks who wear suits.

I mean if anything I see it as a thank you to the fan base. I mean a lot of their pre-sales and sales for L4D also played TF2, obviously again a lot of those same players are going to preorder or buy L4D2, why not give them a free hat as a nice way to say, thank you for supporting us.

Also OP what other extras beyond the hat are you talking about? The hat is the only one I've heard about.

In a business way of thinking with it being a cheaper game with small extras the amount gained from those suttle things in turn makes them earn more money. Also know as a simple marketing technique.
