So, the Wii is the highest selling console, right? That sounds good to me, you? Well, they forgot one thing. This generation of gaming is going to be the longest gen ever, and it still has another 7 - 10 (or more!) years left. It's like in horse racing. Being at the front of the pack at the start normally means you burn out and lose before it's over. They have to make good games for it to last, as lasting on console sales is impossible. They are making the kinds of mistakes 2 other companies made. Sega and Atari. Sega did good at first with the Dreamcast. But then everyone else got better and it died. Atari had a popular console. So, what did they do? Sell stuff like ET and that port that turned Pac-Man Fever into Pac-Man Cancer. Nintendo thinks they can live off of console sales for 10 more years? There is only so many housewives, Nintendo. Either stay with the pack or die alone, it's your choice.

As a 43 year old housewife, mum and gamer I take exception to the suggestion that the only thing I am likely to be interested in is the current selection of non-gamer games like I guess, Wii fit etc!
I do own a Wii, but I also own a (Halo) 360 which is my favourite console, PS3 (at xmas, since I let my older son have the brand new PS3 I bought earlier this year for for his xmas present, cos mums do that sort of thing) PS2, Gamecube (which I like better than the Wii) DSi (upgraded from GBA to GBA SP to DS to DS Lite) PSP.
I own well in excess of a hundred games (yes, I know that there are plenty of people with more, but there are equally plenty of people who say they are gamers with less too, I have financial responsibilities though)
I am not particularly agreeing or disagreeing with the substance of your post, I am still hoping that Nintendo eventually make some games for the Wii that I will be interested in (My 'Cube games consist of games such as Eternal Darkness and Skies Of Arcadia) but hey, if they don't I will hang on to the Wii so that when my 7 month old baby is a bit older he can play some kid friendly games before graduating to the 360 and PS3.
Anyway, my main point is, if you are going to make sweeping statements about housewives, leave me out of it, say something like ''housewives that aren't Jenova65'' ;-) I thank you!

You like Skies of Arcadia?
Damn, if you didn't just become my favourite housewife. :P

You know what would signal the apocalypse? Not of Nintendo, but of the whole gaming industry?
A Pokémon 3d RPG, like the ones on the DS, but on a home console. Coliseum be damned (it was 3d, but it wasn't the same; no running around, catching things in tall grass, etc.), the day a proper Pokémon game on the Wii (or whatever it is at the time) would have fanboys tearing down cities just to get to games stores quicker. Myself included.

That or an official Pokemon MMORPG. So, you getting HeartGold or SoulSilver? I'm thinking both.

Also. OP is a troll.

Um, yeah.

You know what's weird? I once saw a video which said the exact opposite, that Nintendo would be the only company to survive, as the other ones are aiming their games at an audience who will eventually need to take gaming off of their priority list, whilst Nintendo's audience won't have to do that for a much longer length of time.

Yes, because the console wars are exactly like horse racing, aren't they?

This generation does not have another 7-10 years left, or it is at least going to evolve beyond the original idea.

Nintendo have outsold the competition by miles using their 'Blue Ocean' strategy. They led the market by completely ignoring the 'pack'. Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort have all been top of the sales charts for months at a time and they're all entirely owned by Nintendo. The Nintendo DS has sold more units than any other console and has been going strong for the past five years and has a fantastic catalogue of games.

Also, they could release a new console, they're not being dictated to, they can decide to start the next generation if they put enough into it. Nintendo have been in this from the start, they fell behind last generation but have led this one. They are not out of the race and they are certainly not doomed.

I think that Blu-Ray is doomed and that 'On Demand' video will take over. Sony have wasted a lot of money in development and particularly anti-piracy technology. Like the UMD I imagine that Blu-Ray will collapse due to its inflexibility.

Really this business comes down to money and Sony and Microsoft lose money with each console sold or at least did for a very long time. We don't know the future developments and it's far too early to say that any of them is doomed.

I think your estimate of this generation lasting another 7-10 years is a bit high. I'd expect to see the next Xbox within the next 4 years. Developers have already started saying they've maxed out the 360's capabilities.

Has anyone else noticed that his icon is a halo legendary icon? Probably explains why he won't stop dismissing every argument which disproves his in every way.

*EDIT* I also noticed his xbox live name is halo guru, he has a 5 star rating and has 20,000 gamerscore, not to mention he's bought a bunch of stuff off the costume store including what looks like a guilty spark (I think that's what it was called) and halo helmet. See where I'm going with this?

Spend a day in a games retailer, see who buys more games, the "hardcore gamers" buying xbox/ps3 games or the parents/grandparents coming in buying all the cheap games they think their kids/grandchildren like.

Ahem, again with the stereotypes! I most certainly don't buy games that I 'think', my kids will like, I buy games I want (often for my 360, tbh) and games that I KNOW my son and daughter want, cos guess what? We talk! To each other! It isn't difficult :-)

Ignoring stereotypes doesn't make them go away, I'm sure you have a healthy knowledge of games and gaming, but you are a minority, we live in a world of idiots, not to say Nintendo is bad, I love Nintendo and my Wii but I've seen it with my own two eyes on numerous occasions.

Didn't they say exactly the same during the GameCube era? Anyway, even if the Wii would completely stop being profitable (which I highly doubt) Nintendo has always got the handheld market, which they have been dominating since 1989.

Well there are more people in the world who don't know that than who do (I do know the difference and I also know that given a choice I know who I would pick to be on my side in a firefight) and I wouldn't mind betting that 'housewives', make up a very small percentage of that figure, iyswim!
It is just as a gamer, it really rattles my cage when people use housewives as a generic way of describing the ultimate 'non gamer', if you get my drift! Especially since my husband is the person in our house who games the least, less than me, my 18 year old son and my 15 year old daughter (and she plays Mass Effect, Halo etc, but also plays wrestling and racing games for hours......) That's all, really, it just feels like the word 'housewife', is the ultimate way to say boring and out of touch! :-)

Nintendo is neither Sega nor Atari. Nintendo has Pokemon. They have the DS. And how hey have the Wii. With this one generation Nintendo has erased every mistake made for the past decade of fuck ups.

Also of note, all the best selling Wii games are Nintendo games. Who makes that money> Oh that's right, Nintendo does! More cash in the bank.

Nintendo is too damn rich to go down like Sega. It is just not going to happen.

I do agree that to hold people's interest they need more games. But that is not hard really. Nintendo has time on their side because their bank account is over flowing like madness.

People won't buy the same game more than once. After being fooled by it they won't trust them. Also, Nintendo's new buyers are people who normally buy 1 to 2 games a year. That sounds like a sound business strategy to me! I like how people say the gen won't last for long even though NATAL comes out 2010 or 2011, and they have said that they won't be making new consoles for a while (MS/Sony/Nintendo). I know you want to see Nintendo actually make something good for once, but it's not happening. They have gone the way of Sega and Atari.

Mate please, no-one admits they made a bad decision as this generation isn't going to last another three years. Please stop beating up a frenzy with no statistical data, no evidence, and worst of all analogies that refer to living organism. A business is not alive and does not tire because they fire and hire staff; and spend te money they earn. Getting the cash doesent tire the business, quite the opposite.

You don't understand. The housewives don't care about graphics and the graphics fans don't care about the Wii, so it won't make that much $. Wait, better graphics as a cash in? THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE 32X! Wait, didn't the 32X fail? Also, remember, people have to BUY the games for them to last. Bad games = everyone leaves the Wii besides for the 1 to 2 games a year housewives. Utter destruction of Wii results from that.

Then why are the PS3 and 360 still popular?
They have a ton of games that are simply awful, and their products might be all nice and shiny but man, as soon as you crack it open to see what you really got, they are pathetic and lack-luster. It's crap in a graphically enhanced wrapper.

And, newsflash. There are plenty on 'housewives' who do care about graphics, but when a game is only about the shiny graphics then guess what? That game sucks. You don't have to know the difference between a casual and hardcore game to know if you're having fun or not.
You have to balance both things, and the Wii is starting to do that. Just because they choose not to make games graphically similar to COD4 or Mass Effect, does not mean they are incapable of it.
Some of the games they plan to release next year look superb, and I plan on buying some of them.

Until Sony and Microsoft put more quality into their games, aside from the flashy graphics, then maybe I will buy one of those systems again.
That's right, again. When I had them, they were the biggest waste of space I've ever owned.

Edit: A lot of video game stores seem to cary Wii games that cater more towards the kiddies. I have found more mature games in stores that are not strictly a 'video game' store.
Think there are some marketing ploys going on here? It's possible.

More or less the truth - I challenge someone to find me a quality Wii game released this year.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of A New World.

Hmm... interesting point. I don't know if that's out here yet, so... your point is accepted. But that's a recent release either way, yes?

Its like early cinema. The first films were just un-scripted falling about, but people went to see them because they were astounded by the technlogy. Since the wii appealed to the public, many of whom had no prior interest or understanding of games, they play it because the technology is something new to them. This is why many gamers dislike nintendo. They have been gaming for years, and as such the technology is not as much of a novelty to them. And once the novelty wears off the public, they will look for games with more depth than merely 'waggle faster than the other guy to win'. At this point, Nintendo would have to adapt, and while mario, metroid, zelda etc might keep them going for a while, they would be too infrequent. And their awful reputation for treatment of 3rd party developers would make it difficult to get them on board. Not that this will doom them, but its not an unikely course of events.

My mum's Wii has been collecting dust and has only had one game brought for it since we got it (Wii Fit, which was brought on the day). My Xbox account on the other hand has had a whopping 53 games to it's name, 47 of which are retail games (Check LIVE ID Troutmonkey for proof. I also have 3 games on Pre-order (CoD4 MW2, Assassin Creed 2 and Mass Effect). I have at least three friends with Wii's, none of which are used regularily. On the other hand I have many friends who own 360s and actually use them, and buy the latest releases (Most of these people also High End gaming PCs). LANs happen fairly often.

As for the lust for blood drying up? Are you kidding!?
Humans having been fighting each since the dawn of time and continue to this day. It will not end any time soon. People are competitive, and there is no simpler way of displaying dominance than through violence.
There is no reason to not target BOTH Hardcore, Casual and Mainstream audiances. Which it looks like Xbox is doing with Natal.

The Wii is a fad. People don't buy it to play games, but to be stylish. It was the latest and greatest thing at the time. The media hyped it up and told them (the non-mainstream gamers) to buy it and be cool. When these people move onto the next fad the Wii will be left to collect dust. Either Nintendo will have to create that fad, or someone else will (possibly Natal).

By housewives I meant the people who don't know the difference between Mario and Marcus Fenix, but thank you for your post. Also, to others, since when was not agreeing with everyone else trolling?

It's not the ultimate way. That would be calling someone an out of touch, senile, idiot. And those would instantly think of pee if you said Wii to them.

I 'know', it isn't, I said it feels like it, you would be amazed at the amount of times that analogy is used by game reviewers to make a point! It is kind of like buying a red car and suddenly noticing that there are a LOT of red cars, you won't notice it generally cos you aren't a housewife (at least I hope you aren't after all that ;-) )

The problem is is that sooner or later people will stop going back to Nintendo. You know the saying, Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. There's a reason there isn't a fool me thrice. Also, even idiotic people who love games like Wii Sports stop falling for it sooner or later. Do you really think people will buy the same game 3 times? Sooner or later the housewives will stumble upon WoW and then Nintendo loses another buyer. Also, kids grow out of the kiddy game phase. Finally, I don't think Epic Mickey will do good. Most kids associate him with kiddy games, and won't buy it just because of that. Face it, people like to kill things. WHY do you think that the best selling games are games like GoW, Halo, GTA, and Borderlands. Violence.

EA would like a word with you. Look at all of their IP's where they change the number each year and it goes straight to number one in the sales chart.

There are loads of successful franchises that keep repeating, COD, HALO, Tomb Raider, Guitar Hero/Rock Band, GTA, Madden, FIFA, Streetfighter, Resident Evil, Mario, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Sims, Virtual Fighter, Civilisation, Total war, Metal gear solid, I could go on and on. Your fool me twice philosophy seems to have stopped working.

The Wii isn't for me. I don't watch Soccer either, It does not mean that either successful business is destined to fail. I'd argue MS disagrees with you as well or they would not be pursuing NATAL. The Nintendo gimmicks you mention seem to be getting picked up by MS, look at avatars and now NATAL.

Anything that increases gamings popularity is a good thing.

I think that Blu-Ray is doomed and that 'On Demand' video will take over. Sony have wasted a lot of money in development and particularly anti-piracy technology. Like the UMD I imagine that Blu-Ray will collapse due to its inflexibility.

In my opinion 'On Demand' will never be as popular as it could be. The concept is pretty much doomed from the start since not everybody has the connection to fully enjoy the movies. But maybe something changed so please inform me.

On the other hand I think that Blu-Ray will become more attractive. It's kind of like with the DVD. People didn't like it at first but look at it now.

COD had to leave
WWII. Halo changes things each time. TR sucks in a different way each time while fixing the last suck, Mario... I got nothing, Castlevania changes things a bit at least, FF.... Nothing, GT/RB have different music and sometimes modes, GTA adds new guns/cars (besides for GTAIIII), Madden sometimes adds new modes and ads people, FIFA nothing, SF changes stuff, RE at least has new locals, Tekken new stuff, Sims different stuff, VF same as other fighters, Civ. has some improvements, MGS again changes stuff. One thing though, they don't repackage THE EXACT SAME GAME (with a new minigame) like Wii Sports/Resort.

Also, Gaming becoming mainstream = bad shovelware. Here's my favorite quote. Buyers are idiots who will buy anything as long as you staple on more gimmicky words.

So you can tell the future?

This gen could last for any amount of time, but it's much more likely to be around 2-3 years left.

Also, the Wii has loads of new releases planned, and they haven't even begun to use the Motion Plus properly!

Actually nintendo is releasing something in the next few years with graphics on par if not a hairline better than the PS3 and 360.
