Characters everyone seems to hate but you

We've all had them. We play a game, take a liking to a character, only to find out most other people that played the same game hated them.

What are some of the characters you like while majority of other people hate them?
I have a tendency to like a lot of the characters no one else does. And I have no idea why.

Mine would be Steve (Resident Evil), Tidus (Final Fantasy X), and Vaan (Final Fantasy XII). An honorable mention would be Nowe (Drakengard 2). But every now and then, I'll come across people who liked him too. xD

That sarah paliny chick from fallout 3.

I'd boink 'er.

edit: moira brown, thats the ticket.

Who is that?
I never met anyone in fallout 3 who acts like sarah palin.

I agree with Tidus and Vaan. It's not that I adore them or anything, it's just that I haven't really found much about them to find absolutely deplorable. Sure they are a bit naive and whiny at times, but hey who isn't. They're both young and new to the "hero" thing.

Dante from the Devil May Cry series. I think he's cool and fairly unique for a video game protaginist.

Damn you beat me to it.

She annoyed me the first time I played but I agree with you now.

Ashley in Resident Evil 4. I'm not really sure why (though it might be because you can make her go "eek! You pervert!").

Dante's considered disliked? O.o I thought a lot of people liked him.

Rikku from FFX.
Pretty much all of my friends hate her (two exceptions though).

I think most of my favorite characters are fairly well recieved. Scorpion, Tommy Vercetti, Pac-Man, Squall Leonhart. I don't believe they are attracting a great deal of haters.

But I've been often accused of having borderline obsession with Aerith Gainsborough from FFVII. I attribute this to playing the game immediately following a bad breakup, but I'm not so sure I wouldn't have been amiable to her anyway. Admittedly, I've gotten a great deal of flak for liking her. But I've come to realize that most of this hate has come from people who don't like any character who doesn't rate over 9000 out of 10 on the badass-o-meter.

I've known plenty of people who share my affinity for her and her story, and I've met plenty of unlikable curs who speak of her the same way an unruly child speaks of the ants he's dismembering. Not everyone who dislikes her is a cur, of course. Just the ones that feel the need to never shut up about that opinion. All in all, I'm lead to believe that her haters are simply far more vocal than her fans.

No one liked her? I thought she was funny, in the creepy "try no to die ^.^" type of way.
I probably wouldn't boink her, though. :P

Cl4pTr4p. Check me out im dancing im dancing!!!

Everyone seemed to hate Reaver from Fable 2. I thought he was one of the few saving graces of the game.

I dunno I thought he was kinda of a asshole, killing people just because they messed up in a painting. BUT I must say he's a fancy shot and has a great voice!

Oh he was most definitely an arse hole, but a likable one. For me at least.

I never liked Barnem anyway. Oh, right, spoilers.

He's sooo dull! Dull dull dull dull!

I'm gonna say, Parappa the Rapper!

Well, ok. I suppose he was just a bit likable

Why do I know this will draw a lot of hate on this site. Oh, well, here goes...Cloud Strife. Seriously people, he does do quite a bit of whining, and has a mental breakdown. Having your love interest get impaled on a sword in front of you, then finding out that all the memories you have are not real, and that you are just a failed clone of the guy you are chasing this entire time will do that.

Also, he gets over it before the end of the game. One of the reasons I consider FFVII:AC, while an entertaining watch, to be non-canon.

James_Sunderland:
Rikku from FFX.

Rikku's a dude D:

I'd have to say Nathan Drake from Uncharted (although Yahtzee's the only one I've actually heard complaining about him)

The sidekick from inFAMOUS. I remember tons of people complaining about him and I thought he was awesome.

I wouldn't call her Sarah Palin, but yeah... alot of people seem to hate her for some reason. I like her myself.

I said FFX, not Kingdom Hearts. Two different games, two different characters.
Next time, try reading people's posts before quoting them, 'kay?

Most definitely Reaver from Fable II, I don't know why, I just liked him. He was charming, ruthless and humorous, the 3 defining traits of a liked character for me. I hated all of the other characters in Fable to be honest, they all just seemed overly stupid and whiney, and Garth just didn't really have any personality, but Reaver was distinct. Anyway, depending on choices that most people make on a play through, your character has done far worse than what Reaver did. One of my friend's evil characters once slaughtered an entire town because they laughed at him when he messed up a taunt. He'd probably destroy the world if somebody fucked up a painting.

Halo Fanboy:

Wait...there are people who don't like Dante!?

Although I hate almost everything about the game, Zell from Final Fantasy Eight was pretty funny. Juvenile, and he got old by the third act, but he was still better than everyone else in that game.

Rikku from FFX.

I love Rikku, favorite character in the game. Her cheerful and bubbly attitude was always highly entertaining. Unfortunately she was reverted to a dumb blond in Final Fantasy X-2.

From the same game I would say Tidus. Many people seemingly despise him, whereas I found him to be one of the most compelling and realistic character in terms of development in the series.

Everyone of my friends I play on Live with and talk to in random game topics all hate Krystal from Starfox. They say she destroyed the series, that she has no place in the game and other...vulgar things that I won't say. I find her character compelling, with a very intresting background and a lot to offer. And you know what... I like her...

I like her alot!

*Looks at avatar*

Heres to you Krys...
-Cheers

As many people have said, Tidus and Rikku from FF X.
Add to that list Raiden from MGS2 and my list is done.

Probably toad
He's just so awesome, but my friends dislike him

Junpei Iori from Persona 3. Why do people hate him so much?

Cloud Strife. A lot of people take one look at Cloud and immediately dismiss him as just another depressed JRPG he-she hero. They rarely take the time to understand why Cloud is the way he is, and what his real personality is like. You see, the "depressed emo loner" that everyone seems to think Cloud is, is not real. It's an act, a mask, Cloud's way of running from a truth that was too embarrassing to consider. The real Cloud, the one you start to see in the game's final act, is a selfless hero who isn't quite sure he has any real place in the world, yet fights to defend it anyway.

If I may borrow some analysis from Strife, the Cloud Strife tribute website:

strife.midgarrock.org:
When players are first introduced to Cloud, he is cool, confident and cocky. He is the tough, uncaring mercenary who will take any job so long as it pays well.

Or so he'd like to think.

Cloud is actually two people: who he wants to be and who he truly is. One persona, the first we meet, is carefully crafted from his war-hero fantasies and his late -- and only -- friend. He wants respect, he wants to be loved, and thanks to a childhood saturated with war stories, the only way he knows how is to be the cool jerk. He reasons that people will like him for his abilities and icy attitude under pressure; that's the sort of figure he was trained to look up to, and now he is attempting the emulate it. The other Cloud -- the real Cloud -- is a little different.

"A big part of Cloud's character -- one that is often overlooked even by Cloud himself -- is just how genuinely nice he is. For all his craziness and attempts to feign indifference, Cloud really is a sweetheart, and the fact that he feels pressured to hide it is unfortunate. Even if he doesn't know how to express his affections, he constantly -- almost unconsciously -- puts the people around him before himself. He is willing to subject himself to total humiliation -- cross-dressing for chrissakes! -- to make sure Tifa and Aeris are alright. He sacrifices AVALANCHE's advantage to protect Barret's young daughter, and eventually steps in as a -- admittedly clumsy -- substitute father figure when Barret is unable to stay with her.

Even when he leaves his friends and family in Advent Children, it is ultimately done to better the whole. Although his logic is not particularly sound, protecting the people he loves is the first thing on his mind--even as he dies. Maybe there's no hope for him, but he doesn't want to burden his friends in his final days. Cloud doesn't want to sadden them with his situation; he knows he's made Tifa suffer before, sitting at his bedside while he wasted away from Mako Poisoning, and he sees how much she worries and waits over Denzel. He doesn't want to do that to her -- to any of the people he loves -- again, and worst of all, he can no longer offer any protection in return for their constant support.

Cloud's need to be the protector is nothing short of a complex stemmed from years of abuse in his adolescence. Such harsh origins might make his intentions appear to be warped at first, and maybe they are to a degree. The fact that this desire consumes him so much that he feels completely useless if he isn't protecting something is not healthy, but it doesn't change the fact that such a desire drives him. Protecting someone makes him feel needed, like he's doing something to justify his existence, and -- occasional doubts aside -- it's something he does very well. With his training in battle and sincere love for those around him, such a role is certainly fitting. When we finally see him happy -- at "home", as he puts it -- it is largely because he is able to offer his protection to people he cares about; he helps to take care of two children who need, love, and look to him for said protection. It's a perfect fit.

He's one of the most complex and compelling characters to ever come out of a Final Fantasy game, and I can't for the life of me understand why certain gamers insist on hating him.

I didn't hate raiden in metal gear solid 2. He was human, inexperienced and by comparison to a snake he seemed like an idiot (as any of us would) this made him easy to connect with for me as I'd be just as much of a whiny bitch seeing combat for the first time in years.
I began to hate Raiden when others started to like him somewhat, I found the super ninja thing ridiculous (especially throwing massive geckos around using dance moves). They went way overboard, making him a capable killer is one thing but throwing geckos around WTF?

Both of these. I think it's unfair that people who hate JRPGs complain about unrealistic protagonists, but when they act more human, like Tidus in FFX, or Capell in Infinite Undiscovery, people complain that they're too cowardly. Well if I was given a sword on my 18th and told I'm old enough to go kill monsters, I'd be pretty scared too you know.

Anyway, on topic. I wasn't so aware so many people hated Reaver from Fable 2. I thought he was excellent. It was Hammer who got on my nerves if any of them, seeing as she didn't really do anything other than, well, carry a hammer.

Precisely my reasoning. I cannot comment on Capell given I have yet to play IU however in the case of Tidus, you consider he was warped from his essential paradise-esque universe where he was a star athlete, living within the largest metropolis in the world, hailed by mostly everyone and suddenly his entire world is shattered in an instant and he is brought to a whole new world, told his city has been in ruin for a thousand years and no one can possibly help him return.

The aforementioned does not even include his childhood issues with his parents, Sin, fighting monsters and later Yuna.

I believe he has a good excuse to bitch for a little while. :P

Furthermore I agree with you in reference to Reaver and loathe Hammer myself. Reaver may have been a complete jerk however he was entertaining, whereas Hammer was primarily an annoyance from the moment you meet her.
