Sega has released a new trailer for open-world adventure Sonic Frontiers explaining its combat and series-first ability upgrade system.

Sonic Frontiers Combat & Upgrades Trailer Explains Big Series Additions

It is almost November. This means Sonic Frontiers will soon be upon the gaming public. Since its November 8 launch date is still a little bit away, Sega has continued offering some new information on the game. Today, Sega published a trailer that details the combat and upgrade system in Sonic Frontiers. Take a look below:

Taking a page out of games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Sonic Frontiers introduces a skill tree to the franchise. By destroying enemies and breaking items on the Starfall Islands, Sonic will earn Skill Pieces. These can be used to upgrade his abilities, like the Homing Attack, Drop Dash, and Stomp. Sonic can also utilize Red Seeds of Power and Blue Seeds of Defense to boost his stats. These will become imperative as the foes he faces ramp up in difficulty.

Outside of Sonic’s aforementioned base abilities, the Blue Blur can learn some new tricks. One is called the Phantom Rush. This increases the hedgehog’s attack power while his combo meter drains. There is also the Sonic Boom, a long-range kick that produces shockwaves. The Wild Rush makes its debut, too, a fancy zigzag attack that deals massive damage. And for all the fighting game fans out there, Sonic can perform a parry. It’s probably not as intricate as the one in Street Fighter 6, though.

Overall, this combat and ability upgrade trailer for Sonic Frontiers does a good job of making the game look more polished than it did previously. I still worry, though, as the only Sonic video game I enjoyed in recent times was Sonic Mania, and that wasn’t even made by Sega. Our preview of the game wasn’t completely rosy either. The verdict will be in soon, though, as Sonic Frontiers launches on November 8, 2022 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S. Preorders are open now.
