Star Trek Online (Cryptic are Nazis)

So I started following Star Trek Online all those years ago, and the company went tits up. Bad times.

Then, my hope was renewed when I heard a company picked it up. Good times.

It was Cryptic, the same people who brought us Champions Online and City of Heroes/Naughty People. So great, I knew from the start I could look forward to "cartoony" looking characters in space, only missing a cape and some spandex.

I decided to have a little faith (never again) and go with it, I even paid for a 12 month sub after being invited to the closed beta. I had no idea how bad the game was going to be.

Rushed, lacking any substance, basically a load of crap. Cryptic seem unwilling/unable to make the bulk of customers happy now and it's getting so bad on the forums, the nazi staff there are culling hordes of "I Quit" threads and any others that dare speak out about the sad state of the game, the poor treatment of the community, or the fact Cryptic will give up on Star Trek now their new Neverwinter Nights related MMO is in development. I don't think Cryptic were prepared for the massive backlash from the community. Hopefully they will go bust when STO fails :)

It pisses me off to no end that Cryptic/Atari managed to beg such a big, iconic IP from CBS after Perpetual went belly up and are not doing a proper job of something that could be so deep and enjoyable.

I was right by the way, it is exactly like Champions Online, in space. The starfleet uniforms look more like X-Men leather jumpsuits.

Is anyone else involved with STO? Got thoughts?

The only redeeming thing of STO are the graphics, I'm talking the ones in space, of the planets, asteroids and such, not the ground one, those are pathetic.

Don't most MMO type games start out terrible and gradually get better? Honestly, I've never, ever heard of an MMO being openly praised right from the start.

What did you expect? From day one I thought this was a bad idea, and surprise, it was. It had Hellgate London written all over it.

Cryptic gave off the CoH franchise to NCSoft, and that move was for the better to be quite honest. It's no surprise to me that STO is horrible - the lead dev for Cryptic was a nerf-bat wielding nazi in CoH too. Also pretty obnoxious on the forums. >__>

and Champions Online bombed hard after they scammed everyone into lifetime subs =/

Godwinned on the Title. That has to be a first.

I played the beta, and it bored me so I didn't bother.

Sorry that you had to blow cash on that game, it's pretty awful.

Oh man, you only wish it was the first.

On topic, I honestly don't think it's that bad of a game, although I only played for a few hours. MMOs aren't my thing, especially since I managed to stop playing WoW however long ago. It adds some nice features over Eve in terms of space combat in my opinion, but it does have that new-MMO feeling of things not being quite right. I'm sure things will improve over time.

It will need to be reworked from the ground up in order for it to be a good Star Trek MMO. It's a bad MMO as it is, but it doesn't really feel like Star Trek.

To be honest dude, I was actually thinking of getting this MMO. Sure Champ's had balancing a turbluent lot of balance and community type issues, but after seeing The Escapist's take on it, I actually thought it would be radical to play.

Luckiley, the hype has died down faster than a Lake Wave, and I praise the earth mother and time father I did'nt get this game :)

I think half the problem was taking a hard to make good game movie franchise and making one of the hardest kinds of games out there for it.

My brother bought it, I've been playing a ten day trial and will not continue after, it hasn't sold me.

Figured it would get this bad for Cryptic. They appear to be making a habit of making games with great character creation but the rest of the game suffers from total suckage.

I too was in closed beta... my experience with closed beta was enough to dissuade me to not pick the game up when it went live. How on earth did you get roped into paying a 12 month sub in advance? Was it those "They have a really awesome day one patch that is months ahead of everything we see here" bullshit rumor that was flying around? Because that Rumor is in every closed/open beta and its always complete bollox.

I was feeling positive, like "It can only get better". There is no chance it will improve, Cryptic will be focused on their Neverwinter Nights MMO from now on.

STO currently is Champions Online In Space, With a Nod to Star Trek. It's pathetic.

Hopefully I'll get a refund if I keep on mailing them. Thank god I did not sign up for life.

This was never designed to be a long-term MMO, actually even MMO is bad term for it, since you could sell it as a single player game with a multiplayer battle side option.

This was a quick cash in using the Star Trek brand, how many of the millions of trek fans do you think bought a lifetime sub? Its not even if they had to put that much money into development since they just reskinned the Champions Online engine for half the game.

I didn't buy it though since its the usual carebear stuff where everyone plays in there own little happy bubble like 99% of MMOs out there.

I just feel sorry for Trek fans, since my girlfriends Dad is one and he bought this game after having high hopes for it. Now he regrets ever spending the money on it after 3 weeks of play.

It's sad for the IP considering it had to much potential. Cryptic ruined the chances of ever having a Star Trek MMO.

I hear tell that when WoW launched it was widely seen as a very crappy broken game.

Played the Beta, recognized for what it is, had my little rant and moved on.

It was, but most games released afterwards were even worse (Age of Conan for instance), and people back then were used to Everquest and similar games, and it wasn't all that different. Standards have risen sky high since then, much thanks to WoW.

You think that is bad? Age of Conan had a mutiny on their hands before they ever reached Beta when they told fans of REH to go sod off which was hilarious since they bragged about how much like his writing it was going to be. Ah good times nothing is better then watching a Dev on vacation flaming the very people he wants to buy the game he is making. It was highly ironic and fun to watch.

I love Star Trek Online.

Ok, Y'know how people make rant threads on here about the Mods, And the mods kill them? yeah? Well thats pretty much what Cryptic are doing.

Seriously, What good does an "I QUIT" thread do? Quit with dignity & walk away, Why does the world have to know the game isnt to your tastes.

And to contradict the OP, If you like Star Trek, You will love STO, i know i do. If your looking for an indepth MMO to match WoW, Keep dreaming, And go play WoW.

EDIT: Was WoW the amazing MMO that it is (supposedly) today right from day one?

Also, We've already got one new "raid" on STO, and its the start of many.

Could you elaborate on this please? Possibly links?

Is it bad that I read this, saw "Neverwinter Nights MMO" And shit my pants and forgot everything? What is this Neverwinter Nights MMO? Where can I find out more? Why have I not heard of this?

PS: QQ Moar, don't Godwyn your own thread in the title.

PS: Cryptic IS making an aweful lot of these MMO's...wtf is up with that.

I thought the whole thing started with some price cuts or something. I am sorry i have no more information, i read it on wikipedia while i was "policeing" it.

Cryptic offered new adopters a discount and extra play time, which pissed off early adopters who got less. FORUM RAGE ensued. Cryptic quickly backpedaled, first saying oh no no this was just a mistake. Then the people who bought the special deal got pissed, and Cryptic reversed again, saying people who bought the special deal when it was special got to keep their special deal. Meanwhile the offer was trimmed down so as to not offend the nerdy sensibilities of the early adopters. So SOME people got a sweet deal, others didn't.

I sympathise with people who feel they got a shitty game. We've all been burned. This is why I don't fuck with MMO's until they've been out a year or two with no crises.

But devils advocate... did you REALLY expect this game to be good? Really? A highly intellectual show about technobable and political wrangling and philosophy... THAT'LL MAKE A GREAT MMO, YAH.

Space Spoons:
Don't most MMO type games start out terrible and gradually get better? Honestly, I've never, ever heard of an MMO being openly praised right from the start.

You are incorrect.

The thing is that the games that are major successes become the standards to which other games are held to. World Of Warcraft got rave reviews right from the beginning for example. I know because I was a die hard EVERQUEST player, and as such passed on it when it came out and went to do Everquest II, which had some cool ideas *BUT* was far, far less than I was expecting and actually pretty bad in a lot of places. I jumped ship rather rapidly to WoW which was brandy new and was actually like "whoa, this is amazing".

The thing is that the MMO market is one where you can't compete well with a fly by night product. There is a lot of money to be made, but it's no longer in it's infancy. It's something you can't rush, and also an area where you have to realize your not competing with other titles in their launch states, but with what those titles are now. Producers need to realize they are going to need massive budgets, wait until the developers say the game is done (not until they decide they want their money) and be willing to take a fairly long term view on getting their returns.

I think this is a problem with a lot of MMOs, they are rushed, and aren't competitive with the established games that people will go to/go back to if they don't immediatly grab them. Also in dealing with content they need to realize that most people coming into MMOs are not going to be new to the technology/game type, and will be veteran players from other games. Thus you have to pace content with the understanding that if some guy who is an expert player from WoW is already looking at an endgame grind fest within 2 months he's probably going to decide it's more satisfying to play the game he spent years with and go grind there instead of in your game. Truthfully pretty much all MMORPGs right now launch with a ridiculously small amount of content, and when challenged Devs and producers will say "well, the game is the same size WoW was when it first launched" which is meaningless because they aren't dealing with WoW when it first launched as their competition.

I Betaed Star Trek Online, and really I wanted to like the game. Not because I'm a Star Trek junkie (though as a nerd I am something of a fan), but because it was a game giving me both space based adventuring in a ship, and ground based adventuring with guns and such within the same product. Something I wanted for a long time. The problem was that as they got close to launch it became obvious that the game wasn't really polishing up in any noticible way, and the content seemed rather limited and to get VERY repetitive, VERY quickly. When I first started I was thinking "hmmm, given the hype this is a game I might want a lifetime membership for" but once I got into it the entire thing pretty much reeked of a quick cash in. That said I expect it to be fairly successful because of the name.

What STO really reminded me of was the "Pirates Of The Carribean" MMO that Disney came up with. Back when that game was conceived of I thought it had potential to rock because it was a pirate game that wasn't trying to be obessed with historical accuracy and people who get off (probably literally) on old ships and naval jargon. Plus it had the potential for fantasy trappings like magic and monsters and all kinds of cool stuff. It was a decent liscence, using a universe rife for expansion. Instead it turned into a banal retread of the movies, with half the promised features removed, a ton of bugs, and even more lulzworthy guns you couldn't shoot people with (I really am not kidding).

Cryptic has potential as a developer, but they need to land some serious funding. Doing these fly by night projects which appear to have a limited budget isn't doing them any good. I can see their potential in what they produce, but I don't think they ever live up to it. I'm not going to knock them too horribly. They also need to do whatever it takes to make sure that their funding sources aren't going to have them rush the games out the door because to be honest none of their titles I have betaed seemed even close to being in "launch worthy" condition when they kicked them out the door... and I've betaed almost all their games, had comments ignored on them, and was speaking from experience coming from having probably betaed 20 MMOs big and small over the years.

Of course I will say STO is NOT the worst game I've experienced. As far as truely professional creations that weren't Korean-type "cash shop games", I'd say both "Dungeon Runners" and "Auto Assault" were even worse around the end of beta. Anarchy Online had the absolute worst launch I've been a part of, BUT it did shape up rather nicely in the long run which is a shame. Really I think they should have worked on an AO2 instead of "Age Of Conan" and this upcoming "Secret World" thing.

I've never been a big MMO fan, I've dabbled in Lineage 2, Conan, LOTR and some lesser known MMO's but your right when you say most of them start out really bad and buggy, I don't know if STO has any chance of being salvaged or not, nor do I really care, but this is what happens when your a early adopter of MMO's

Smart things this guy said.

Cryptics stuff does seem pretty unpolished and repetetive and...annoying.

Seems a shame, the stuff they do has potential.

Elaborate on what? The Devs had revealed some WoW ripped off game mechanics. Players bitched about it not fitting the fluff of REH the Dev then told the community that their opinions did not matter and they would create the game however they liked and the fans be damned. No links since it was back in the pre-Beta forums which have since been wiped.

Star Wars: TOR > STO. BIOWARE DOING AN MMORPG!! That. Is. Awesome.
