Fallout: New Vegas - I Put a Spell on You Quest is Broken

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 NEXT

This one was weird for me. Curtis disappeared completely on me. I reset the quest using a console command, and then started it again. When I got the nav point to talk to Curtis, he was at the Poseidon Gas Station west of Camp McCarran. WHAT. THE. HELL.

If you tell Captain Ronald Curtis about the late night break ins at the control tower, the monorail is doomed no matter what you do. If you tell him about the break ins, you won't hear the radio conversation that discusses the bomb when you follow him in. He can't know that you know that.

The quest is definitely screwy and needs some work. But if you want to save the monorail, now you know what to do.

EDIT: Delete this post if you'd like. Apparently there was some delay in my post showing up.

I defused the bomb, no-problem at all.

No one likes a braggart...

Well reading this it looks like I did everything exactly the way it should be.

I asked around, got the tower key, spied on that dude's radio broadcast, diffused the bomb, and won the game! ...er I mean mission.

Course when I upgraded ED-E the 180+lbs of good I have stored in him disappeared, grr.

You know, I love this game, and really it is far superior to fallout 3, but come the fuck on guys. Bethesda, why on earth does your engine still have the same problems it did in Oblivion? To much time swimming in money to fix anything?

Defused the bomb, PC version. Probably fixed by the update.

So I was just locked out of The Strip for no reason. I go online to see how to fix this, and what do people suggest? They say to get into the Strip by using the MONORAIL!! Son of a bitch.

Edit: Or you can take out a Securitron from far away and then take it's key.

My tip on making sure you don't fail some quests is don't go into any vault until you have a quest to go into there. Other wise you risk failing a quest due to killing or looting something that needs to be looted later.

I can't believe I need to say this, but SPOILERS AHEAD!

During the quest, when you need to defuse the monorail bomb, you defuse it and it still explodes. Is this an isolated incident or is this common?

Incredibly common.

I, however, managed to complete it by doing the following:

rosac:
Im too busy killing ghoul reamers and then dying to rigged motorbikes to be of any help, but quite a few things seem to be broken, such as joe cobb getting stuck between 3 other npcs so I cant kill him and disguises not working at all.

I was confused about disguises myself until I found that they do not work on "guards" or "merchants" of any given faction.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a clear way to determine who exactly is a "guard". Is the NCR soldier walking around guarding something or is he simply wandering?

In the end, if I need a disguise I probably am not well liked by a faction anyhow. I don't bother with the disguises and just try sneaking. If that doesn't work, well I do have a variety of silent ways to murder someone at my disposal.

Snowalker:

1) not disappeared, they've been told to wait. This happens in a few quest lines without them telling you they've been told to wait. Just retrace your steps, you'll find them.

2) legitimate

3) you ransacked the place, in the process killing people and taking things, if any of those people or things were related to the main quest, then thats why you failed it. I can't personally confirm they were, but I highly doubt you failed a quest for no reason.

I actually went back and loaded the save right before the fail happened, and did the same thing again with no failure. I'm on the PC and my brother on the 360, and we have both seen this. Also we both ran into a problem with lucky 38 (or whatever mr houses casino is) that victor is dead on teh doorsteps and when we enter we r attacked. 2 of the exact same glitches on 2 different systems... come on

If you're having a quest issue, for example not being able to talk to an NPC you can simply look the quest and stage ids up on The Vault (Fallout wiki), and use the console to advance the quest in your game to the stage it should be at. Not hard in the least. To those of you with only a gamerpad at your disposal... well, good luck with that, you chose your allegiance.

its MEANT to explode. you confronted curtis. when you hear him, let him finish then slip outside, disarm the bomb, THEN REPORT TO COLONEL HSU. DO NOT SHOOT CURTIS THEN REPORT TO HSU. that results in the explosion. its not a bug, you just fucked up.

You can just shoot all the gates guards too, if your feeling violent...

Well, the victor being dead thing is very weird considering that on my game, he died before I hit the strip and he assumed control of another robot, hell, I even talked to him about it. While I can't say what happened to you didn't happen, I think its fairly rare, considering you're the first person I've heard that scenario. As for failing the quest, I'll buy that game glitched, though, I believe something more along the lines of, "Person required for quest was killed by random wasteland creature, thus causing you to fail the quest" That seems a hell of a lot more likely considering its fallout.

Yeah that's what I meant by taking out a Securitron. You don't need to take them all out though. I just shot at one from far away with the service rifle, and the other ones didn't notice. That way it didn't give me any infamy in the Strip (taking them all out does).

I did this quest fine, at least, it didn't blow up, is still there for me to ride, and Mr. Vegas talks about how I saved the day.

But I know that doesn't mean it isn't a problem for others. I've been having a mostly bug free time with my game, for which I am grateful.

No, that's a bug. Way to be a dick to a guy for no reason, though.

i use caps instead of bold since the escapist doesnt have an easy to use control panel and uses an archiac code system.

if he wants to complete the quest, he has to do it THAT way otherwise the quest fails.

Kinda hard to not kill a guy when he is instantly hostile.

are you wearing NCR armor? officers see through that and will attack you regardless of rep.

I don't think so, this was a while back.

To help alot of people out, i found out how to get the monorail to NOT blow up. All you have to do is crouch and walk up to it, deactivate it, then crouch and walk away. If you try to run out of the door and back to Hsu, the damn thing blows up.

For me, this leads to another glitch where I can't actually turn in the quest. I'll crouch, diffuse bomb both with explosives/science and activation codes (have a save from just before I go through the terminal door so I've done this in every possible way I can think of), crouch out and exit the terminal without the train leaving, report to colonel Hsu and all I get are the normal speech options. I tried every speech option and nothing.

I had exactly this problem also.

I followed all instructions, waited for the dude to show up and he never did, then randomly he catches me out in the open and im forced to talk to him. Now, every time I sneak into the building he INSTANTLY knows im there and I cant eavesdrop the conversation - leading to the same problems as outlined above.

Bethesda + Pooch = Sticky Dog Anus.

Having read all this, I think I figured out how to make this work, for the 360 anyway.

1. Talk to Hsu. Get the quest.
2. Talk to Curtis.
3. Talk to the Lt. who wants you to beat the crap outta the Legion guy (I forget her name), and ask her if she's seen anything suspicious. She'll tell you about the tower.
4. Go to the tower, about 1:30am. Hack the terminal on your way in--not sure it's essential, but it's easy, and it seems like it can't hurt. Enter while sneaking, and wait at the bottom of the stairs. That way you can eavesdrop on the Curtis radio transmission, and he won't turn hostile because he won't see you.
5. As soon as you're done listening (that is, when he mentions the bomb), leave, and head directly for the monorail platform.
6. When you get there, go into the car, find the vent, disarm the bomb.
7. Leave, and go talk to Hsu. You can leave sneaking or not, at this point, as near as I can tell. Actually, though, you should probably leave NOT sneaking, because if you sneak then the train doesn't know that you've left, which is why you can't complete the quest (I think the workaround involving the sneaking only works because of that, and if the only way to keep the train from blowing up is to sneak away from it, the quest is already fucked).
8. When you talk with Hsu, you will have to option of telling him that you can prove that Curtis was going to blow up the train. Quest completes, you get paid, as near as I can tell none of the other bad, buggy bullshit happens.

Anyway. The key seems to be that you hear Curtis talk about blowing up the train, and then you go and defuse the bomb, BEFORE you talk to Hsu again. When I've returned to Hsu to keep him posted, the train blows up even if I disarm the bomb. If I do it this way, the train doesn't blow up. So.

Cheers,
Dan

Fallout: New Vegas: Walkthrough: Sidequest: I Put A Spell On You
I just beat this mission wasn't really much help on the internet so here goes. I talked to boyd and all the main people inside the building afterward i went right outside the comm tower and hid near the plane where i could stil see the front door, i got there around midnight on a monday, i just waited there for about an hour and i saw someone walk into the tower, i went in after them and they started a fight killed them, mission complete. Hope this helps you cuz i was about to just give up on the mission and this worked for me which is awesome!

P.S. Went to diffuse monorail bomb, as soon as i walk towards it it takes off and blows into a million pieces so i don't see how its even possible to diffuse it...

***UPDATE**: I just diffused it, luckily it saves when you go through the door so i reloaded my file with the monorail there when just walking up to it normally it would take off and explode, but i crouched and stayed along the fence and was able to walk up to it and get inside diffuse the bomb in the vent.

***UPDATE***LOL!!! So after diffusing the bomb, the monorail takes off and still explodes...wtf scared the shit outta me! I only tried using my science/explosion skill so who knows maybe that was it but im done messing with it.

I ran into EXACTLY the same problem, right down to having to reload from walking out the door. I was able to disable the bomb by either defusing, or by disarming (using Science), and in both, the quest updated to say that I disabled it, then the monorail took off, and then it blew up. I got the "quest failed" reward as well.

Wonder if they need to hire QA people - I'll be glad to play their games and get paid for it (and it sure beats writing software instead!)

Worked fine for me (PC), right up through defusing the bomb... though I never saw the guy walk into the tower, he just sorta materialized there. He was easy to pickpocket, though (for the bomb codes)... and then when I snitched on him he just sorta died, no one came to kill him, and I ran straight to him, but he was already dead.

i defused the bomb without incident.....are you playing PC or Console, are you using the most up to date version etc??

I just finished that quest earlier tonight on 360 and thankfully didn't have any problems.

Mellebek:
Actually, how do you get to that point? I'm at the point where I'm supposed to wait around the Comm tower for the spy, but I've waited all hours of the night and I've gotten nothing. What am I supposed to do?

i had trouble with this too
just wait until the time hes suppoesed to come and go straight inside on sneak
.... i think :/

I'm having troubles with this quest too and I'm on the 360 version (I was under the impression that the 360 was less broken).

At first, I couldn't get the informant to spawn in the tower. Then after days of reloading/waiting/hard resetting I got him to spawn in the tower, and after reading threads similar to this one, I already knew I had to sprint straight to the monorail instead of talking to Hsu.

When I got to the monorail, there was an invisible barrier blocking me from actually getting inside the car. My only option was to take the monorail, which I obviously didn't want to do since I knew it was rigged.

Since I couldn't get inside the damn train, my only option was to go talk to Hsu. He told me to sprint back to the monorail. The first time I got to the monorail, it took off before I could get inside. I decided to reload the autosave and see if I could get to it faster. This time the invisible barrier was gone and I managed to get into the train before I took off - I disarmed the bomb using my skills rather than the deactivation code, but when the train took off, it still exploded.

I reloaded a couple more times and the train took off before I could reach it.

Finally, I reloaded, popped a turbo and ran onto the train before it took off. Then it started taking off with me still in it, and I ended up magically floating through the back of the train as it pulled out of the station.

Still haven't gotten it to work. This is fucked up man.

Ive actually managed to complete the quest bug-free, here's what i did:
first you wait around the tower between midnight and 1am, i waited by the tail of the plain opposite and then waited for the spy to walk into the tower, then useing a stealth boy, i sneaked up the stairs and listened in on the convo. when you hear the part about the bomb your quest should update. once its updated run straight to the monorail and crouch along the fence and up the stairs into the train, and then still crouched turn left and you should see a little vent to the left of the door. Approach the vent and activate in (Note: you MUST have a science/explosive skill over 45 to disarm the bomb, if not you need to pickpocket the spy for the codes), once you have disarmed the bomb, your quest should update again saying the bomb has been extracted, crouch back off the train and back along the fence into the terminal, your then free to run back to Hsu and hand in the quest.

Hope this helps :)

I find this really wierd i got the game a while back and had nothing but problems with it, crashing, bugs, corrupt save data, the lot so i got fed up and took the game back, about a week ago i went out and got it again to see if there had been an update but there wasnt so carried on from where i left off but this time i have had no problems at all a few minor things but no bad problems, the mission with the monorail your all talking about on both occasions i have not had a problem at all you wait outside the control tower till around 1am go through the door and wait at the bottom of the stairs, confront him and kill him, then head to the monorail where as you walk in the door turn left and you will see a door where you usually walk to the next carridge look on the bottom left you will see a vent the bomb is in there easy, i cant get to vault 11 been there brfore and stuck lol

The quest worked fine for me when I did it on steam in december fully updated.

I realize this isn't much help.... sorry
