Games where you play as an animal

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

So I just recently played some "Ecco the Dolphin" and I was wondering if there are any other games similar to this (playing as an animal and (if possible)in a more realistic enviroment). Something like "Okami" woult be fine, too. It seems really hard to find this type of game nowadays. Any recommendations?

Only ones that really come to mind are Crash Bandocoot

and Croc.

Edit: Sorry, can't think of any realistic animal games.

If invisible wind dragons count, there's Flower.

First thing that came to mind was Okami. If you havent played it you really should.

Also i suppose Spore technically counts.

Does donkey kong count?

What about Twilight Princess?

Sonic the Hedgehog?

Deadly Creatures, you play as a scorpion, snake or a apider I think within "realistic" 3D enviroments. As far as I know though it is only available on the Wii.

Evo. The old Lion King game, although that game is crazy hard. Even as an adult, and with a gamefaqs page open, I still found it impossible to beat that game.

Step aside citizen. I've got this one...

Ahem.

OKAMI

If you like the Legend of Zelda games, but want to to play something that has a great gameplay mechanic (the celestial brush), better music and oodles of character, then Okami is the game for you.

If you haven't played it yet, then...

Spyro the dragon

Spyro the dragon... not technically an animal.. but mythical creature...

and all the others mentioned already.

Gex, Donkey Kong, I'm pretty sure there's a Sims Animals now, please take your pick at any time, I'm rather annoyed with the ABBUNDANCE of them. There's also the aforementioned Crash Bandicoot, Croc, and a few years back, there was a Brother Bear Gameboy Advance game that was quite similar to Donkey Kong, but with bears. There are tens of thousands of versions of Snake, though I'm not sure that really counts, there's the Bugs Life game, etc. etc. etc. Take them off my hands please, I've grown quite tired of having to stare at so many everyday. And you thought that there weren't many to be found.

Dog's life, you are a dog and it is about your life. It wasn't that good but you could poo on npcs which is always a plus.

the endless forest. you are a deer. you can't do anything.

This is gonna sound weird, but I recommend Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. In the game, you're a man, but he's pretty much a monkey. His name is "Monkey" and his acrobatics are quite monkey-esque. It's a great game too, well underrated.

Dead to rights Retribution. I think you get to play a dog in that game, never played it myself but I heard it wasn't so great.

There was a simulation game where you played as a wolf. Lemme see if I can find it.

EDIT: Found it! And the game was called... "Wolf"! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_%28video_game%29

There's an old PC game called Wolf where you play as a wolf. I'm not sure if you can even find it anymore though. This link might work, I didn't look into it too closely. I think there's a service fee though.

Does a Lombax count?

Okami, Sonic the Hedgehog, Starfox.

Pretty much the majority of animated movies with a game at its side. Kung fu Panda, Open Season to name a couple

This made me think of Spore, while your creature evolves into people, you do play a phase where your an animal, dealing with other animals, and your desicians there have a basic impact on how the other stages (Tribal, Civilization, Space Travel) play out.

Okami, which I found was really fun. You play some god in the form of a wolf, so close enough.

Banjo Kazooie's a good one. You play as a bear carrying around a smart-mouthed bird in a backpack.

daftalchemist:
Evo.

OMG, E.V.O.: Search for Eden.

That game was amazing. I had completely forgotten about it. It needs to be remade so badly. I replayed it so many times.

There's a game called Altered Beasts for PS2 I think...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Altered_Beast

Yup. It was a pretty gruesome game, you basically are a human who can transform into animals, I really liked it tbh, and the animals feel quite realistic. The setting is... well... it's pretty cliche but it's sorta realistic. If you have a PS2 or whatever you should give it a look.

How about the Pikmin games?

Your character commands an army of Pikmin, cute (yet bloodthirsty) half-plant half-animal organisms that seem to have the mentality of ants. They're small and weak on their own, but en masse they can accomplish incredible feats, like defeating voracious animals ten times their size and lift extremely large objects. They're apparently fearless, willing to sacrifice their very lives for you.

Gameplay is a mix of adventure and RTS conventions, with a few light puzzle elements thrown in for good measure. It's really engaging once you've mastered its intricacies. In fact, I'd say Pikmin 2 is one of my all time favorite Gamecube games.

EDIT: Oh man, how could I forget Space Station: Silicon Valley for the N64? You take control of any number of robotic animals, each with special weapons and abilities. It has a quirky sense of humor and the sheer novelty factor kept me playing for a long time. It's an obscure game though, so you might have some trouble tracking a copy down.

I believe Amaterasu is the Shinto sun goddess.

OT: The only things I can think of are Star Fox, and Twilight Princess(although you only spend some of the game as a wolf)... but those are hardly realistic situations.

how about sly cooper or the conker games

SPORE!!!!!

Wow, I'm quite surprised people got to this before me, but yes, it's a surprisingly good game too.

You can get it completely for free (and completely legally) here: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/531/Wolf.html

It's probably the most realistic animal life simulation your going to find, and there's also a Lion version on that site somewhere.

Blackfoot! A Metroidvania sort of thing where you play as a black-footed ferret. Or else a mink (which looks like a stoat in ermine.) Or a beech marten (or perhaps it's meant to be a pine or stone marten... but it looks like a longtailed weasel.)

There's also an old adventure game called Inherit the Earth. You play as a furry fox, with a creepy boar and deer sidekick. The ferret village is adorable, though.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeons sort of count...

SimAnt is really fun.

Eek! the Cat...? I remember some kind of side-scrolling game about a cat with a bag that, I think, had a lot of question marks all over it. Can't remember what it's called, though.

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers is a good one!

And, of course, CHEETAHMEN II.

Or a Sega Genesis... Darn young'ns!

Anyway, how about... Diablo 2? Pick a Druid :p
