The worst game of the year

So we've had a few "game of the year" threads so far, but I don't think we've had a "worst game of the year" thread yet. Not that I could find anyway.

So here it is! Which game, to you, earns that dubious distinction? The biggest waste of money for you this year, thus far?

I'll start the hostilities with "Brink". Not just a massive letdown, but a terrible game in its own right.

Duke.
Nukem.
For-never.

Well it depends, if Battlefield 3 is patched it may be up there for GOTY.

If not, then by default it is the worst as it barely works.

Basically.

Definitely not the worst game ever, but definitely the biggest letdown ever.

The worst game I've played so far this year is Catherine. Way to go, Japan, you've made yet another terrible game with a dating sim tire-ironed into it, then populated it with a cast of completely unlikeable characters. Let's hear it for Japan, everyone!

I hate to say this, but probably The Cursed Crusade, even though I love that game to bits.

For a game that I think is the worst: Brink, just...dat A.I (I don't like Multiplayer)... and it was just eh...even the SMART button wasn't as awesome as it was touted to be. Thank god I played it on my friend's PC.

Rage... I knew duke was going to suck and brink also got bad reviews.

But rage had a good review and while pretty it was the ultimate let down. Nothing new, nothing original, hell nothing perfected. Other games have done everything rage has done, and they have done it better.

This goes beyond Worst Game of the Year. It took over a decade of waiting just to be let down by a pile of garbage wearing a Duke mask.

Worst Game of the Decade, now THAT'S an appropriate title for Forever.

For me, Brink.

Funny, because at the same time I am posting in this thread, another thread was on the front page for "Most boring game you've ever played". Brink fits both categories perfectly.

I generally avoid bad games, but I did pick up two total stinkers this year: Duke Nukem Forever and Homefront.

Homefront was a massive letdown as well. I liked the premise, I liked the fact that it has a John Milius script, and the gameplay itself wasn't bad, the but at the end, the whole experience felt like a tutorial for a better game you didn't get to play.

Of the games I played this year, I liked Two Worlds II the least. It wasn't a terrible game, though. It had some seriously clunky menus, creepy-awkward character animations, and awful voice acting. But it was good in a few ways too. It had a pretty world to explore. So if you're really into just wandering about, I'd actually recommend the game to you.

the worst game i played this year was off road; extreme for the PS1 wait it's 1997 right? No? well i'm too poor to play new games, so i can only go with what zero punctuation gives me.

unfortunately its sword of the stars 2... it was released pretty much unplayable and on top of it they had day one DLC species packs :-|

on the upside the deveopers will spend the next few years refining it and making it an excellent game if the first sword of the stars game is anything to go by. but it would be nice not to have to wait 12 to 18 months for it to be that product

I try not to buy bad games, so I usually only get stuff that I know will be good or I know I will at least enjoy.

To that extent I have played two games this year, one that I hated but I'm sure everyone else liked and one that I liked but I know others hated.

The game I played and liked was Bleach: Soul Ressurection, which despite all it's fun for me I understood why others didn't like it

The game I played and hated was Shadows of the Damned, not because I thought it was shit, but rather just a major let-down. With a strong opening and horrible ending, I felt like I had wasted my time and didn't really enjoy myself, even though I knew there were people out there who loved it (and of course people who just loved it because of Suda 51, which I still don't really understand)

I understand not liking the game (I sure didn't), but you realize that dating element was the entire point, right? Hardly 'tire-ironed' into it.

OP: Duke Nukem was pretty awful.

Worst game I have gotten to play this year. But I'm sure there was much worse that I just never picked up. Brink does come to mind, god only knows how awful all the movie video games were.

I agree with both brink and homefront, I didn't play DNR in the end due to hearing everywhere how much it sucked.

Brink was just boring, it's main trick (the so called smart button) was no where near as developed as it should have been.

Homefront I think had major potential, but was just a huge let down. What should have been a stealthy, freedom fighter-esque objective based game with morale of citizens and revolutionaries (kind of like red faction guerrilla on earth or the ps2/xbox freedom fighters game) turned into just another dumb first person shooter.

For the record, I have nothing against first person shooters, I just don't like it when games like homefront are hyped up to be something they are not. What should have been done was an update or sequel to freedom fighters with more varied objectives and the ability to properly command squads to complete the missions (whilst also having side missions from civilian or military npc's which are picked up by exploring the environment), now that would have rocked if done properly.

I am still holding on to the possibility of that game being released, preferably in third person format. However, to shake things up, how about you get to play as a korean/japanese freedom fighter in a game where the US are the invaders? That could be an interesting change of pace.

I have played it on the PS3 as well as the PC, it works just fine. Maybe it is just you?

OT: I love these topics. A breeding ground for trolls.

Either way worst game of the year would have to be:

Portal 2

Why? IT WAS TOO FUCKIN' SHORT! I WANTED MORE DAMNIT MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!

I miss GlaDOS and Chell :'(

Nope has been happening to most. Didn't you notice the message in the menus saying that they are working on fixing the bugs and for us to be patient?

Not true! In fact, one of the most fun games I played this year, and a game that should've been played by a lot of people who initially rightfully dismissed it as "just another movie game" was Captain America: Super Soldier. It steals from the best, and it's derivative, but hell, the combat's a blast.

Shadows of the Damned. I was one of those people excited for Suda's involvement, and in my defense No More Heroes is bloody awesome, too bloody awesome. What I got was an extremely linear game with awful level design, unimaginative gameplay, and puzzles so simple it was downright insulting. Probably the only case where great characters didn't save a game for me. I was literally shocked at how insubstantial the game was and I sold it in no time, absolute flaming shit on a stick.

Call of Juarez The Cartel. By far.

Duke was pretty bad, but for me it has to be pkmon black and white as there is no point in playing it more than once.

Capitano Segnaposto:

Hahaha..haha..ha...or you're being serious? I would have said Portal 2 was in fact one of the best games I played all year.

I know it's old, but my pick would be Medal of Honor. The story was non existent, not a single real character, and just all around bleh.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel

LA Noire really wasn't what I wanted it to be. It wasn't completely horrible (it was fun to go through once), but it had some huge flaws. Useless, empty open world, shallow gameplay, linear nonsensical story, crappy ending. I had expected more.

DNF had juvinile charm. Call Of Juarez: The Cartel had absoluteley no redeeming value. Worst game of the year.

Capitano Segnaposto:

...worst game...

Portal 2

...I WANTED MORE...

I don't know whether I should slap you for saying Portal 2 was the worst game, or if I should hug you and say "I know that feel, bro".

OT: Definitely DNF. I only got 3D about a year ago, but I love the shit out of it. I only assumed that DNF would revive the series and deliver the game we all expected. I feel sorry for everyone who waited 15 years...
