Poll: Most Disappointing Game of 2011?

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 5 6 NEXT

Most disappointing was Duke Nukem Forever. It could have been something to bring us back to the days of shooters when they were about fast paced wizz bang shooty fun but instead it just sucked.

My most dissapointing game is going to have to be Dark Souls, I started loosing interest but kept playing, then I got to Seath and just thought 'I am done with this game'. I didn't find it overly challenging, some of the bosses were awesome (here's looking at you big ass wolf) but overall, a big ol' merr. It's a shame because Demon's Souls was the reason I bought a ps3 and that was worth it and the some.

It turns out I didn't buy any games this year, There were not many games that enthused me enough to buy them. I bought add-ons or played ones I already owned as I felt for the sake of my degree I didn't have time to commit to the sprawling time sponge games. It's a shame, I did however play some of the new releases I wouldn't say any disappointed me massively but the FPS games all seemed the same this year. I was going to go with BF3 but the origin code nonsense put me off and the fact it's trying to be like COD.

Amazing year. Bear with me.

Deus Ex, LA Noire, SW:TOR, Space Marine, Arkham City, Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Shogun 2 (No ones mentioned that yet?)Dead Island, Dead Rising: OTR, DoW 2: Retribution, Portal 2, Minecraft..

There were big disappointments too, sure. There always are - such is the nature of this industry. But when reflecting on a year in gaming I prefer to look at how good the good was, instead of how many games fucked up.

This year, the good was very, very good.

Uncharted 3 disappointed me. I know I'm in the minority here, but the story was just too flawed for me to get engaged.

Also, Skyward Sword. My least favourite Zelda; I just found it tedious.

Dragon Age 2 was rather disappointing, but still okay.

Carnagath:
It was a pretty decent year.

Goty: Dark Souls

Most disappointing game: Uncharted 3 (6 hour single player and boring multiplayer)

Biggest fuckup: Skyrim on PS3. Bethesda should be in jail for false advertising and fraud.

how exactly do you imprision a corporation?

I'm going to be controversial and say Portal 2. It was by no means a bad game but we were promised a 10 hour epic with a substantial co-op. Instead the single player had some laughably easy achievements and got completed in ~4 hours. Also the co-op is boring to play with someone who has already completed it. I sold it within a week of its release.

But Brink tops this by far... ugh, it missed every single one of its goals by miles. If you were excited for it then you know how everyone felt when it got released.

Skyim on the PS3.

Damn you Bethesda. I gave you money and 70 hours of my time and I didn't to get finish it by far.

Never again will you get a pre-order from me.

Fix it or die!

I would tie Duke Nukem Forever with Skyrim.

DNF because it was bad and made no apologies suit, and Skyrim because it was SO far hyped. That being said Skyrim isn't BAD, just couldn't live up to anywhere near the hype.

Well when i think games of 2011 my heads thinks of these;

Dead Island, DA2, The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Saints row 3 and portal 2.

DA2 was absolutly terrible, they basically kicked pc gamers out on there arse saying "screw you", it was just terrible not going to say anything else considering the majority who have already posted about have pointed out it's flaws.

As for the rest i loved them all, the only one which disappointed me some was saints row, and this is purely because it seemed to me like alot of the content which should have been there was coming in dlc.

F.E.A.R. 3

Screw multiplayer being shoved into great SP games. Screw it right in its ear.

MiracleOfSound:

You do know that all the other FEAR games had multiplayer, right?

For me it was Brink. It was an ugly, buggy mess of game. To add insult to injury, I paid $60 and it was retailing for $20 less then a month later.

The only part of that game I really had any fun with was customizing my character and guns. I seriously think I spent more time doing that then actually playing the game.

I still have many of the year's biggest titles to play more or try out but what I've seen so far, it's been a nice year in gaming. Saint's Row 3 has a lot of things to do so it really feels like a sandbox game. Many others have just made the impression of having a city to scour through but then disappointed with too much linearity. I agree that Skyrim didn't feel as epic as people were lead into believing it would be but first impressions about the game were that it looked nice and played ok so I think I'll have fun in wandering and doing those quests.

To sum my opinion up, I think that Skyrim will be the worst letdown. I also felt that Duke Nukem Forever wasn't too good but actually I never expected it to be so I didn't fall from too high pedestal :)

Back to gaming now, have a nice xmastime people!

I think it was a fantastic year in gaming, best year in a while.

well so far skyward sword, started it yesterday and god dammit it, it is the most tedious/annoying game i have played all year, dragon age 2 seems amazing compared to it.

maybe after 5-6 hours it gets better? still...god dammit this game is really really disappointing me so far.

Dead Isand
Payday
Fable III
Brink

All sucked

Overall though

Better than average.

Dragon Age 2 was this year right? Then that by far.

At least for Duke Nukem forever we all knew it was inevitably gonna suck, but da2... Well dont think anyone saw its fail coming.

Otherwise for the year in gaming... Mmm wasnt too bad, my tastes tend to differ from the norm (i really aint into fps) but i cant complain this year, i got rpgs and i got strategy games and i got to see a continuation of a game i loved (deus ex) that wasn't terribad (though i dont think its quite as good as some say it is).

L.A. Noire, Venetica, and Knights Contract, all for having interesting premises that were ruined by poor execution and bad gameplay decisions.

This year was kind of meh for me. I played and bought a few games but only aboutl half of them did anything for me. I'd have to say that my most disappointing games were Skyrim for the ps3. The civil war questline seemed very unimportant and felt very tacked on, the main quest was insubstantial and was too much of a chore for me to bother with a second run,and the glitches made my heart hurt.
I did enjoy the new armor and weapon designs and the guild questlines as well as all the dwemer ruins however.
Sadly I've lost three files to glitches and memory problems so I wont be playing it anytime soon. I was very disappointed because i am a huge TES fan.

Sixcess:
Star Wars: The Old Republic

It's an MMO for people who don't like MMOs, made by people who don't like MMOs.

Dito. Well said. I really hope there will be an announcement for KotoR 3 soon, but, well honestly i don´t think that will ever happen:(

Explain yourself moar! I think I'm buying it today.

how exactly do you imprision a corporation?

1. Be a US prosecution lawyer
2. Find evidence of individuals who sold broken product knowingly for millions of dollars
3. Make indictment list
4. Prosecute them
5. ???
6. Profit

Uncharted 3
Skyrim
Saints Row The Third
Catherine
and some others. xD

It was a good year for gaming! There will always be some bad titles though xD

Ha ha ha! Love how you've got this all planned out.

Skyrim really seems to have p***ed a lot of people off - was this all down to the bugs or was it the hype?

Dungeon Siege 3. total departure from the previous game style, and the has become another button basher / isometric pseudo RPG.

Battlefield 3 is a major disappointment, and I don't even think it is a Battlefield game, just COD with a battlefield paint job.

-Sun that is 10x bigger than normal and takes up half the screen even if you're looking away from it

-Graphics have a weird "washed out" feeling, like you're playing in a slightly more colorful version of fallout.

-Support class has explosives

-Many guns are fillers indistinguishable from each other

-Incomplete commo-rose that won't be finished until February 2012

-Vehicle unlocks throw game balance off

-A lot of unnecessary visual clutter (Smoke, laser sights, flashlights, etc.)

-Instant deaths discourage teamwork and tactics

-Disgustingly bad netcode that makes the game downright unplayable in some cases

-Unlock system encourages grinding with particular guns and nothing else

-Unlock system forces you into on-rails progression. Sorry, but to get the only decent sight for this gun you're forced to unlock 6 useless ones first.

-Recon class is a disaster on every conceivable level, and best left out of this game or given a major overhaul

-The maps... just forget it.

I could go on and on with this, but basically Battlefield 3 is the most colossal failure this year. I wasn't expecting the second coming of Christ or anything, but this game has disappointed me consistently and without many things done well.

Ben Saville:

I'll never understand people like you. Something is bad because people say it's great? That makes no sense. Just enjoy the game. Or don't. Just don't legitimize your like/dislike by basing it on other people's hype, it makes no sense.

OT: DNF for me. It's been said elsewhere, but I'll just say it gives us all a bad name.

Based on what I played this year. My biggest disappointments were these:

RAGE- two hubs, F-it all ending, too much racing elements.

Brink-, confused as hell, the characters despite having so many options always looked the same, difficult to control and change objectives on the PC.

Homefront- Played the free trial during Thanksgiving on Onlive cause I could. My balls felt like I was getting kicked every time I played it but I wanted to finish that mother-f-cker so bad just to see its crappy ending. That was the most bashing and punishing story I ever came across, from the forced no fastforward cinematic at the beginning, to the cliche script of here is happy loving people and kids wait for 2nd/3rd act for them all to die feeling. Was a great game for propaganda pieces that bashed you over the head. And not in the do the right thing kind of way in other games.

Battlefield 3- I converted to it cause after MW2 I saw that Black Ops was a retread of the MW series and that MW3 was the same thing. It felt like the sports games, the same game with players on different teams.

Modern Warfare 3- Didn't play, watched lets plays of it, still disappointed me with the use of the one female speaking character.

Dead Island- Again lets plays, LIES not an open world zombie melee game.

Minor hiccups
Dues Ex: Human Revolution- Only for the boss fights, that's my one minor problem with it.

Games I thought were okay but not disappointments

As mentioned before DA2, I liked that they condensed some of the game, but I hated that i knew all the secret holes in all the maps before ever walking in. Though that being said Dragon Age: Awakening pissed me off cause I lost out on getting an item for an ultimate weapon cause I walked into a no point of return room. Anyway back on the proper rant, I enjoyed that the story was a bit more real and as much as I hate at times having a voiced protagonist there was a human element and sympathy for my decisions.

RedEyesBlackGamer:
Dragon Age 2 failed to live up to Bioware's usual standard. Design decisions screamed "rushed" and the game was just a big fat "meh".

I agree, Dragon Age 2 was such a disappointment compared to Origins I felt quite let down :(

I'm not surprised to see several people hating on Skyward Sword, but personally, I haven't had any problems with the controls, I love the graphics, and although Fi is a TOTAL captain obvious, she only talks for a few seconds, and doesn't go HEY, HEY, HEY, LISTEN, WATCH OUT, so I still rank her above Navi (although Navi was far more useful). Personally, I would rank Skyward Sword right up with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask as one of the best games I've ever played.

I can't really say what the most disappointing game of this year was for me, mostly because I don't buy games brand new (Zelda being the exception, unless a game is on sale, ie: I bought Dead Space 2 'cos it was $20 off), I usually wait a year or two (I just got my Xbox 360 this year). I picked up Dark Souls, Shadows of the Damned and Fallout: New Vegas today for Boxing Day sales, so we'll see how they fare. I'm interested to see in what ways Dark Souls will kill me two million times.

Aprilgold:
Worse then average. Everything that tried something different didn't sell, and the copy pasted shooters sold thousands of copies for a engine upgrade. Seroiously, it wasn't very innovative and did a poor job in doing anything but shooting different minorities.

I didn't like Skyrim, just way too easy.

What are these games that didn't sell? Out of curiosity, not argument making.

Personally, I'm very happy with the games I got this year. Picked up Portal 2, Bastion, Deus Ex 3, and I thought they did pretty well, especially the first two.
Of course there's always Madden and COD and all those copy/paste games series that make billions, but I just don't care about them anymore. They can't hype me or excite me or ever take my $60, and that's my little victory.

Are you a super-genius or did you read through the strategy guide several times before you started the game?

Thank you! Finally someone pointed that one out!

It is personally my least favourite game of this year. Say what you will of other games, it will lead to "The other games were better", or "It had a few problems". Duke Nukem had way too many problems, was too slow, the weapon choices were poor, and was way too juvenile.

I saw a demotivational poster that really summed up my opinion quite well: Duke Nukem 3D was a bad-ass, Duke Nukem Forever was a douche.

Don't tell me you've never been disappointed by something because you anticipated it being better than it actually was. I looked at Skyrim before release thinking 'this is going to be the best game in ages' and the information other gamers around me cemented that idea.

But, through no fault of its own, the game couldnt live up to that. i.e: I didn't enjoy myself anywhere near as much as I thought I was going to. But I had the same feelings with the fallout games when I started playing them, and then i went back to them after a while and loved them, so who knows.
