Okay, I loved skyrim. Honestly would have considered it my game of the year but Dark Souls exists.
But I find some rather strange trend on the internet, everywhere people praise it but on 4Chan, and other related chans, its considered casual shit.
Does anyone have a theory on why? Also what did you think of the game.

I think a major thing is the anonymity of 4chan. Who cares if you get flamed? There's no repercussions and it's pretty hard to get banned without actually trying to. Not to mention it seems half the point of half the boards is just to insult everyone's opinions...and post pictures of cats.

Becase it's not absolute ****. No matter what your opinion on the game, it is completely wrong to call it absolute ****. You could hate it, it could be the most dreadful game you have ever played but due to the amount of working content, hell even just the lore from it all you can not call it absolute ****.

You can say you thought the story was absolute **** or that the combat was, however you cannot accuse the overall game of it since there is so much stuff in there that most people enjoy.

Please don't think I mean that anyone who doesn't like it is wrong. I don't think that, I do however think that the people who hate on it way too much either got taken in by all the hype or are just overeacting because it did admittedly get stupid positive reviews that ignored all flaws as well as the huge amount of forum threads it got that praised it as perfect. -_-

Anyway Skyrim wasn't that bad, I just dropped it because I kept getting the overwhelming feeling that my actions were hollow and inconsequential as fuck.

And the quests just weren't as good as the ones in Oblivion. Points gained for the Arnie guards though.

The first words I said in my post were "I love Skyrim". I dont think anyone read anything but the title XD

Honestly I thought skyrim was mindblowingly awesome when I first started playing it. Looking back on it after the hype is past its not game of the year great. I get the feeling many reviewers were reacting the same way.

I wouldn't know about skyrim's critics but it's supporters can and will insult you relentlessly for not agreeing with them. I think it's a mediocre game that at best deserves a 6.5/10. Strangely, I found Fallout and Oblivion to be very entertaining. You're much better off with Dark Souls. Now, that game was, to me, much more entertaining than skyrim could ever hope to be.

Other places hate the game as well. Personally I'm not that big a fan of Skyrim.

The difference is that I don't rant and shout my opinions about them. If someone on 4Chan wants to express their opinion they will do so in a much "louder" way (or as "loud" as you can get in type format).

People have opinions and express them. This is apparently surprising to some people.

I'm sure there is also some well-founded criticism in there, not just unsubstantive derogatory statements. As you've probably noticed yourself, Skyrim is far from perfect. Also, "love it or shut the fuck up" is not an attitude conducive of an actual discussion of merits and flaws.

Well people were complaining about it after it had been released only a few days. The following thread for example was made 10 days after release and belongs to that special time when anyone who expressed a dislike of the game would be lynched for being so "Oh my god, special snowflake-hipster-troll".

Please, don't go hating on other online communities here. That's not what we're about.

But this does go and prove a point: on the Escapist, there are different expectations of the user. Just saying "skyrim is outright shit" is unacceptable here. One would say "I did not like Skyrim at all because of X, Y, and Z, and because of these reasons, I feel the game was one of the least satisfying N experiences." or something like that.

4chan has different expectations and standards, so people say different things.
