Do you feel sorry for non gamers?

 Pages 1 2 3 4 NEXT

I have a lot of non gamer friends and i sometimes try to explain to them how emotionally invested in games people can get. I have tried to explain that i have been in a 4 year relationship with Liara from the Mass Effect series. I feel bad for them because they are missing out on some of the greatest stories told because they don't get to play games like Skyrim, Uncharted, Mass Effect and Metal Gear Solid to just name a few.

Let me know what you think.

For them, it's sort of a "you can't miss what you don't know" thing. It is kind of sad that these people tend to harbor ill feelings towards games and never approach them due to stereotypes and false assumptions, but that's just how people are. Shoving it in their face won't make that any better. You can't draw a bird in by throwing seeds every time you see it.

Also, I'm not so sure I'd call the ones you listed the "greatest" stories told, even in video games ;-) They're good and well put together for the most part, but if you want the best try Ico, Shadow of Colossus, Silent Hill 2, Half-Life, HL2, etc.

Not really. Everyone has their own interests. I'm sure (or I hope at least) that they get just as much enjoyment out of whatever the hell it is that they like to do as we get out of playing games.

Not sorry so much as sorrow, because anyone who would close off an entire medium to close mindededness probably misses out on a lot of things due to it.

THIS is the unfathomable truth. The Gamer Master Race doesn't need those infidels.

Non-gamers are an abomination, a plague who leeches the Earth of their creativity strength, they obstruct the flow of money of games to spend it in their empty shells, their souls stagnate in their wretched corpses.......but the wheel must turn. Gaming its inexorable and CANNOT be denied; Their fate its irresistible, my friends. You all are my Harbringers of Gaming, the Scourge of Normality, Reapers of their bland life. Remain steed fast, end the non-gamers paracitic curse and restore the gaming world; The standard of High Art for games belong in your hands.

Hm.... sorry, i.....had a trouble with the fireplace and i dont know what overtook me when i wrote that up there.

If they are happy doing what they do then all the best to them as long as they don't ignorantly criticise games just for being games. I wont feel sorry for them unless they're interested but unable to try a game.

Yeah , to social life , with the constant getting laid , and the huge flows of cash from not spending money on games , and not being socially judged because you have a passtime most feel are childish . I feel REAL BAD FOR THEM.

Just cause they don't play games doesn't mean they've got a social life or are getting laid.
xD

But no, not really, there are various media I don't know or care much about (Anime/Manga being a big example) and I don't view my life as missing much from it. Sure it's great for the fans of it, but it's not great for me.
I extend the same thoughts to non-gamers.

I dunno. If I liked riding around in a speed boat, should I feel sorry for non speed boaters? People like what they like.

I do think quite a people, especially in my age range (mid 30's), have a pretty anachronistic view of gaming, still, and don't realize how far it's come. But as someone else pointed out, you can't miss what you don't know.

krazykidd:

They cant get laid and you know it. If you dont have money for espending it in video games then get a better job by studing and done, the non gamers will just stick with the minimum wage job because that its enough to buy booze. If you dont socialize its because people no longer have sites like the arcade where you actually have to get dressed to be in a public place like it.

:D

People my age who aren't interested in games sound boring, it's hard to grasp why someone would not enjoy games with the sheer variety there are to play. Though who am I to judge? I'm sure they often find themselves isolated by the perception of non-gamers as dull. Live and let live, as long as they don't feel the need to criticise games. It's a bit like the whole "you don't watch tv? FREAK!!" bullshit, calling someone out for that sort of difference is philistinism.

Games don't have that much to offer. Compare it to movies for example. The only games that one would say have to be played are . . . portal maybe?

It's just not their thing. There are a lot of things I don't like that is so important to some people. I'm not sure about the greatest stories ever told either, they're fun games but I don't think they compare to Shakespeare.

Uncharted is one of the greatest stories ever told? When did that happen?

Some people just don't want to play games. If they ever feel inclined to try it out, they will. Otherwise, just let it be.

To each their own. I only detest it if the person condemns it or judges me.

Captcha: Salad days. Must be what being judged by gaming feels like.

Yeah, you are right. Movies have so much to offer!! Character Arcs, well structured narrative, good pacing and everything that makes a good movie that its worth every millons of dolla........

Oh...wait

Uhm....Ok, bad example. i suppose that literature is having a great time showing off to the movies and games how a good story is don........

I feel sorry for anyone who arbitrarily denies themselves a medium. Although the ones I feel sorriest for are the ones who don't read.

...

Also, Liara? Skyrim? Please tell me you're just messing with us.

I actually spend far more money on socialising than games, not that I go out very often. I buy a new game maybe once every 2-3 months on average, spending just under 40 a go. However if I were to 'go out' every weekend, just once, I'd easily end up spending a good 20-25 every week. As such, seeing as I generally enjoy gaming far more than going out, I don't go out every week. I reckon I still spend more money on it than games though.

I'd probably spend more time gaming if I didn't have a job, but therein lies the problem.

I kinda feel sorry for people who can't play games, not due to physical limitations (though I do feel sorry for them for different reasons): for exampe my mum just cannot play games. She can't do it. I tried getting her to play Halo with me once, I'm pretty sure she managed to crash her Spartan. For her, I feel sorry that she'll never get the chance to experiance the great games (if you can't pilot the Master Chief, imagine what a mindfuck Portal would be!).

A perfect contrast would be my brother, who simply doesn't enjoy games. He can play them, he can control the characters, and occasionally we fight each other on Dawn of War or something, but anything more than a single match in the evening and he becomes bored out of his mind. Him, I feel less sorry for... and I'm not sure why.

Maybe this is getting too philosophical than it was meant to, but at least my brother gets to try them, lets to give the story a chance to be so good that it overcomes his natura apathy towards the medium. My mum, on the other hand, will simply not be able to even try the first 5 minutes of the story to see if it grabs her.

Could you give a total list of ALL the games he played? preferably in order.

So if I show a picture of Call of Duty, I'd prove you wrong too?

Elmoth:

No because the film industry has been around since 1895 and all the remakes/reimagining/sequels since 2000 are the majority of all what Hollywood shat out and already exceed every single good movie or high art film ever made PERIOD. (the remake to exploit brand recognition that has been around since forever has been explained by Mr Plinket in his Star Trek 2009 review)

For games at least only COD and MW3 are the black sheep that we can easily dismiss because video games exist since Atari times (at best 30+ years compared to 100+ of Hollywood) and i can forgive that the people making video games still havent realized that this isnt the place for the bullshit that the film industry does. There isnt just enough COD or MW3 to ruin everything yet because Its just a matter of perception, the fact that people talk about those games doesnt change anything because in the long run they will run out of things to said.

Why Skyrim? Why Uncharted? Why Mass Effect? I could understand Metal Gear Solid for being so batshit insane the writing is (reminds me of Killer7)

That's called Sturgeon's Law. 90% of everything is crap. It doesn't mean the remaining 10% is also crap.

No not really. I envy them actually. Every decision I've made in a videogame means shit in the real world. Lots of wasted time I could have invested on something more meaningful.

You are so full of shit. There have always been bad movies. We just forgot about them because they sucked. You actually believe that in a 10-year period, there are more shitty Hollywood remakes than there were good movies in all of history? You seriously fucking believe that?

Here's my challenge to you: name every bad remake you can think of in the last 10 years and I will name 2 good movies from any point in time.

Translation: "I can't be fucked to do any real research, so here's an excuse instead."

I'm a gamer and I haven't played any of the games you mentioned. And I don't feel sorry for myself, either. There's nothing wrong with not enjoying video games. There are plenty of other great hobbies and things to do with your time.

Then why are you even saying that games DONT have much to offer? You just contradicted yourself. You just dont know many good games and that is it, in the same way that people think that there are no good movies anymore because they dont know any better.

*snip*

Could you give a total list of ALL the games he played? preferably in order.

I can certainly try:

Ocarina of Time
Various Grand Theft Autos - from Vice City, up to 4, back down to buying 3 on his iPhone a few months ago
A football (that's soccer if you're American) game on the PS1, loved by my family because one of the combo buttons was to full-on boot your opponent in the face
Crazy Taxi on our old PS2 (this one, now I think about it, he could play for hours)
House of the Dead III (again, our home copy, we don't go to arcades much. I did have the lightguns though! :D)
Halo 1 & 2 (both co-op playing through the full campaign, along with many hours of splitscreen/networked multipayer, no online)
Sim City 3000 (we managed to play this against each other: start at one date, you have until another date to make as much money as possible. It's really fun!)
Counter-Strike: Source (for about an hour, offline, VS me. I think he got one kill... we have rather different natural skill levels)
Command and Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour
Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade, replaced by Soulstorm when it was released
Guitar Hero (or at least that type of game)
Neverwinter Nights 1 (again playing co-operativly with me, he enjoyed it but we never completed it - I was home for the holidays - and he never played it solo when I left)
Minecraft

That's all I can remember... I'm sure there are more and the order may not be perfect, but the importent ones are in there and it's mostly chronological.

God no. That's completely ridiculous. Feeling sorry for people for not liking the same stuff I do?

You take you're relationship with a girl from the mass effect seriously and need to explain it to you're friends? image

I don't feel sorry for non-gamers and I usually enjoy what they prefer to do instead of playing games.

LOL. I hope you mean stories told in games, overall? You must be crazy then.

And if you feel sorry for non gamers, do you feel sorry for gamers who dislike that specific games?

I imagine there's a lot of younger people on this forum because it is usually a fairly early stage in emotional maturity that you come to realise that different people derive interest from different things. It is very self centered to not be able to see outside of your own wants and be confused by this. That's a pretty brutal assessment, I understand.

For instance, my mum loves her gardening. Absolutely adores it. To me it's a horrific experience that I'd rather never do in my whole life. Different strokes for different folks and all.
