Sick of being the good guy!

Since someone said Prototype, I will say Minecraft. Find an 'anything goes' server and start trolling. The best part? You actually are being evil to people, since you are ruining their hard work and killing them so they lose things they spent hours getting.

Fable
Fallout 3
Prototype
KOTOR 1 or 2
SWTOR
Infamous 1 or 2

Go nuts.

You can be evil in the Saints games...
Walking around with your giant purple bat humiliating everyone, you can either be a public menace or a terrorist, take your pick

Command & Conquer. Faction, Nod. A quasi religious, terrorist organization / businesses. First thought hell bent on world domination, but really they are trying to bring on an invasion of aliens so that their leader and chosen may ascend to the aliens worlds.

They preform inhumane experiments on humans with Tiberian.
Murder civilians.
Sabotage, subterfudge.
Genocide.
Use of WMD's. Nuclear, bio, chemical.

Really just about any despicable act you could think of this group preforms.
I'd call Nod and their leader Kane, pretty damn evil.
Kane is also supposed to be the biblical Cain. The first human to murder.

Karnot:
from what I have heard from friends about fable 3 it is kind of linear. even when you are evil you still save the people and that is lame. And that is the problem with game where you are "supposedly" evil. Look at ME2 you can be a renegade, and make some a-hole moves. but you still end up saving the day. I just don't understand why game developers wont make more games where you play from completly from the evil perspective.

To bring up a phrase we would often say during D&D games, "There is a differencen between Chaotic-Evil and Chaotic-Stupid." -- (we would also say, "There is a difference between Lawful-Good and Lawful-Stupid" as well...but that's a different story).

Just because you are totally evil doesn't mean you won't save the world. If the world is destroyed, you can't be the evil Overlord...because, you know, you are dead along with everyone else in your plane.

Play KotOR 1. You save the galaxy, yes. So you can rule it as your own evil self.

Or, if you really get off on just mass slaughter when no restrictions, you can play a sandbox sort of game like Morrowind or Oblivion or Skyrim. Rather than trying to save anything, you can just murder civilians...all. day. long.

The Suffering, man.

I mean, the protagonist is a child killer, a fucking child killer. It's a struggle to get any more evil than that. Both games are also brutal as hell, so it is fitting.

you could always go with an MMO, that way you can be evil to real people :P

Good call. Add in Grand Theft Auto as well.

And there are certainly really disturbing indie games out there that have received a lot of negative attention, OP, if you really are like that. They usually involved the torture and/or rape of women and I don't really want to promote them or send sales their way, so I won't name them. But if you really want to be horrible, the games are out there.

chimeracreator:
Tropico 1, 3 and 4 lets you be the dictator of a small island. So if you're a horrible leader you can create an oppressive police state, civil wars and constant rebellions.

Oh yeah, and tropico 2 has you play as pirates where you kidnap people to be slaves on your island. 1 & 2 are lacking but very unique compared to what else is out there. I still have yet to really get my hands wet with 3 or 4.

Try NWN2, it's pretty good in that respect.

I really liked Prototype, which is available on all platforms. It makes wholesale slaughter a very hands on experience and you can turn the streets of Manhattan into a body horror abattoir.

Fallout 1 and 2 and New Vegas offer up some great mechanical and narrative nastiness. Fallout 3 has options, too, but the Black Isle and Obsidian Fallout games have more teeth than Bethesda's entries.

Grand Theft Auto and Manhunt (series) by Rockstar give you some good morally blank sandboxes and psychotic, depraved stealth games, respectively.

Saint's Row 1 and 2 were pretty solid, though 3 was a bit too whacky to actually feel properly evil in.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is a great evil character RPG, true to the White Wolf pen and paper RPG. Cool, ambitious game let down by a few technical issues. Worth playing.

Off Good Old Games.com you can pick up some older titles, too:

- Postal 1 (though isometric, it was considerably more 'evil' than Postal 2 or 3's silliness)
- Syndicate (the original Bullfrog one)
- Messiah (you are a cherub sent by a wrathful god to punish the sinners by possessing their bodies and making them kill each other)

Finally, as RTS, 4x or TBS goes, various historical games like the Total War franchises let you play pretty brutal warlord autocrats all throughout history. Relic's games are good, too: 2 Nazi armies, the Wermacht and the Panzer Elite. Their Dawn of War warhammer 40k titles feature *mostly* evil armies, too... Necrons, Tyranids, Orks, Chaos, etc.

-----

Anyway, I hope that gives you some ideas dude, I feel your desire to be a bad guy and have enjoyed games that do that for me. I think that's why I gravitated towards being the storyteller / Dungeon Master in D&D and other RPGs... got to play all the villains >;)

Fallout: NV. Join Ceasars Legion. They are the biggest assholes in the that game. If your looking for an stratergy game then try Command & Conquer or the total war series. Also try INfamous, Prototype and God of War. Alex Mercer from Prototype may claim to be the hero but he eats innocent people.

Hitman. It's a game where you play a hitman who kills people. For money.
None of this good guy crap. Admittedly, the people who you are payed to kill are bigger scumbags than you but that doesn't stop you from garroting random civilians.

Destroy all humans, but it might not fit your oddly specific criteria.

hell, a game you said you liked, overlord, has you save the world, which you say you don't want.

you confuse me.

Id go with the Old republic. You can be fairly bloodthirsty and evil in it. Especially as a Sith Juggalo with a Jasea Willsama companion.

But you get plenty of chances to threaten to kill someone, watch them plead for their lives, take up their offer to spare them, get them to do your bidding, then once they have done what you asked tickle their thorax with the searing end of your lightsaber. There are other times when you get to wipe out entire groups of people with posioning water supplies and other various evil deeds.

Yes it lets you be more evil than most games, but the odd part is that after a while evil gets so boring because they still only let you get so evil, though Sith Juggalos have the ability to keep a permanant slave and force her to watch you have sex, so there is that.

Trezu:

kman123:
Play Prototype. It's impossible to be the good guy, literally. Even though they paint Mercer as the good guy. He really isn't.

yes yes yes yes and Double YES

thats the funniest game very and you can be evil like a boss

Well...

But yes, that game is amazing for causing destruction.

For mmos, Swtor is the best for being an evil jackass. With the sith you can basically lightning everyone for no apparent reason. Its quite hilarious.

Hmmm...this might fall under the "just be a dick" evil category, but what about Black and White? Play as an evil god who can summon volcanoes and lightning. Or...just send your giant cow to squash your enemies. Up to you.

Savagezion:
Destroy all Humans.

Ooh yes, I second this.

Loved this game to bits.

Overlord never satisfied my taste for evil, it's all fun and mayhem for a while but somehow you end up the hero when you save the world from something far more evil.

Oh, I just remembered one! It might be a bit of a curve ball, I don't know how many people would know this one: Solium Infernum.

Don't want to play good? How about we set our stage in Hell (capital H). And the players are demon lords who murder, cheat and backstab their way to become the new ruler. Or let me put it this way, in order to win, you have to be the most evil because you're literally getting the throne of the prince of all that is evil. You have to outevil other bastards who basically have the same qualification and motivation as you. I am not entirely sure how much more evil you can get, as you're starting the game quite far away from any shred of good. It is said that the game can break friendships. Oh, and you need to play against live people.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun ran a session - here is the diary. It's a bit verbose but I found it's worth reading.

Karnot:
I always hate being the good guy. So does anyone know any titles (preferably fantasy) where you can be truly evil? Also RTS games (like disciples) with truly evil factions, are also verry welcome.

I already played :

-Dungeons
-Overlord 1,2
-Dungeon Keeper
- Heroes of might and magic series
- Disciples

And please, do not say that you can be evil in games like Dragon age or fable. In those games you can only be a dick at most. I mean Boohoo, you won't help someone with a quest and therefore someone dies, you are being an egoistic a-hole at that moment you are not evil. If you could be truly evil in dragon then you should have options like :

give finger to everyone and join the freaking blight. Now that would be evil. Or as a mage character you could summon demons to posses your party. Now that is being a bad guy.

So if someone has any titles or any upcoming titles where you can be TRULY evil please tell me.

It's hard to find a game where the developers truly know what evil is and actually take steps to support it. Mostly because:
1. They think Jerkass=Evil
2. Too cowardly to make a game that allows truly evil actions due to what the public (read: people that don't play video games and don't like them) will think of it.
3. They actually support being good, but instead of just focusing on making an excellent story of that, added in a morality system to pad the amount of hours players get out of the game, so they don't put much effort into the evil.

Nothing I'd recommend hasn't already been mentioned, but if I had to recommend something, it would be Soul Nomad and the World Eaters. I've never actually played it but I hear it has a demon path that is exactly what you'd expect it to be. You're about as much of an evil, sadistic, ax crazy bastard as you can get. The problem with that one is that you can only be evil after playing the original storyline, it's only available on New Game+.

I too would like to see a game that lets the player be a sadistic, torturing, and mass murdering psychopath, and not as one of 2 options either, but I have yet to see it.

There's Evil Quest on Desura, going for $2. If you like old school Action RPGs like "Crystalis" for the Nintendo, "Secret of Mana/Evermore" from the Super Nintendo, and a bit from the "Zelda" 2D games, the mechanics are pretty similar. The exception is that Galvis, the main avatar, is a pretty evil dude. To give a summary of his actions in the first 20 minutes of the game: Breaks out of jail by killing his guard, steals a spell from his neighbor in jail through trickery, and will kill drunk bums for puking on his shoes.

II2:

Fallout 1 and 2 and New Vegas offer up some great mechanical and narrative nastiness. Fallout 3 has options, too, but the Black Isle and Obsidian Fallout games have more teeth than Bethesda's entries.

I wouldn't say that. While I haven't played the evil path of New Vegas yet so I can't comment, I found the evil path of Fallout 1&2 to be less that great at being evil, it was pretty apparent to me that the developers favored being Good. Why? It's because being evil has very few benefits, even with planning it out, and it cripples you in most cases to be evil. Everybody despises you, you can't take any sidequests that are good, which is most of them, and in Fallout 2 especially very few companions (which in that game are actually useful) can join you and most will leave you if you go evil.

How did we get to this point without mentioning The Last Story? In The Last Story, you can..

* Push people down while running past them in the streets
* Place banana peels on the floor, making people slip and fall
* Knock bowls of fruit onto the floor, making whole crowds slip and fall
* Cheat on your girlfriend by hitting on random chicks (with the option of being a total bellend)
* Steal a poor kid's most valuable possession, and worst of all...
* Use a magic arrow to trick some random girl on the street into falling in love with some random loser... for all of 20 seconds, at which point she snaps out of the spell and slaps him.

All of these, you get rewarded for doing! This means that the game is ENCOURAGING you to be the most evil, dastardly sonovabitch in history!

</joking>

[serious]

Get The Last Story. I don't care if you wanna be a bad guy. GET THE LAST STORY. If nothing else, you can take a break from the epic, 30-hour storyline by being the town troll, as mentioned above.

Planescape: Torment.

And if you have the heart to actually be consistently evil in that game, consider me duly terrified of you.

Well I think you are the bad guy in Manhunt. Either way that game is extremely brutal and banned in Australia.

The reason why it's hard to create a compelling game where you play as an undeniable evil person who revels in their evil is because it is hard to create a compelling or relate-able evil protagonist. If the protagonist KNOWS they are evil and are committing evil for the sake of evil then it comes off as corny and insincere. If they commit evil so that they might ultimately commit good (see Revan) then they are not really the kind of evil you are looking for. The problem with what you are asking for is that in order for you to join up with the truely "bad" guys your character would have to be completely stupid as you would be shooting yourself in the foot and most likely signing your own death warrant.

It's like asking why you can't play as a zombie in a zombie survival horror game and that's because it's practically impossible to create a compelling character out of a mindless zombie who just follows orders/hunger and the game would have no staying power because nobody could relate to or feel any connection to any of the characters.

Probably the most compelling realistic "evil" characters you play as are characters who simply follow orders and do as they are told because they don't have the courage to resist the system they are controlled by. The problem with characters like these is that they tend to be very cowardly and uninteresting because they avoid conflict and conflict is what pretty much constitutes the majority of any story so it's hard to work with a character like that. So in order to fix this the game usually makes them a "good" person who is asked to do evil things and then has to deal with the internal conflict of whether to carry out his orders or to resist the system at his own detriment.

Prototype is probably the best example I can think of at the moment in which a game creates a relate-able (if slightly insane) character who is evil. The game accomplishes this by making you think that you are the good guy by having you fight seemingly evil people who are trying to hurt you and it's only after you step back and really look at what you've been doing that you see just how evil you really are.

Lejsen:
Overlord never satisfied my taste for evil, it's all fun and mayhem for a while but somehow you end up the hero when you save the world from something far more evil.

There's a difference between being the hero to save the world, and saving the world so that YOU can be the evil overlord without any competition.

Karnot:

To be fair, in Me the choices are never even supposed to be evil. You are always the good guy, but you get to choose between "badass" and "heroic".

SC2: HotS when it comes out, Zerg are pretty damn evil.

Other than that.... it's hard to say, evil seems rather ambiguous in this context. Empire: Total War is about trying to conquer lands, does that count? Maybe Carmageddon, surely that counts? It's violent certainly, but it's more gratuitous violence than evil violence. Hm.

Ectoplasmicz:

Savagezion:
Destroy all Humans.

Ooh yes, I second this.

Loved this game to bits.

I third this. That game a schadenfreude simulator.

Well if you're into something abit retro then how about the game "Evil Genius". You pretty much playing a Jame Bond type of villain as you plan to take over the world!

Reet72:
Hitman. It's a game where you play a hitman who kills people. For money.
None of this good guy crap. Admittedly, the people who you are payed to kill are bigger scumbags than you but that doesn't stop you from garroting random civilians.

Nah,you don't play Hitman to be the bad guy,you play Hitman for the stealth, the atmosphere, the assassinations and how you execute them. It's not a game where you can choose to be a dick, even if you have the option going in a killing spree, but I think that takes out the fun out of a stealth game.

tippy2k2:

1. Stubbs the Zombie: You play as a zombie who eats brains. I believe it's on the 360 "Original" downloads (or for the Xbox if you can get one of those).

AND while wearing a rather dashing suit too! I loved that game, specially when you could bowl your head at people and piss in a dam to infect a town :D

KOTOR is a game where you can be evil, I'm not sure how much as I haven't beaten it (yet) but it's there.

Black and White lets you do some fun things. Like set villagers on fire and throwing them into opposing villages to have him light their buildings on fire. Or set wolves on their fleshy asses, or have your creature throw his turds at them.

Yes your doing all this to take down another God but you can chose whether your doing it to stop him and let peace reign or to steal his followers.

Lord of the rings: Battle for middle Earth 1/2 pick evil campaign... done
Skyrim.. ?
Alien Vs Predator 1 & 2 & 2010 - pick alien or predator... and you're a evil mofo :P
Star Wars: Knights of the old republic... go evil path.. UNLIMITED POWAAAA!!!
Mount & Blade - any of the games and go nuts!
Star Wars: Empire at War - pick empire campaign

what i just could get from the top of my head...
