For those who keep complaining about the lack of good Space Games......

FreeSpace 2 is still alive and being updated with awesome new graphics thanks to this source port called Freespace Open.

Trailer:

Gameplay:

In spite of being over 13 years old the game holds up amazingly well thanks to both a great source port and lots of mods (including the fancy graphics you saw in those videos).

There is even a mod that ports FreeSpace 1 over to the Freespace 2 engine.

I am currently enjoying this game a great deal.

For those who keep talking about how there are not enough new space games this is something you should probably check out. It can be bought at gog.com and for the source port just google freespace open.

Hopefully this thread has peeked your interest in this great game :)

Cheers!

EDIT: To prevent any mistakes: You NEED to download and use the freespace open source port in order to get those fancy graphics. Its a large download as well (over 10 GB if you want everything. Less if you can live with having fewer features) and you need to fallow the instructions. Thankfully, its not hard and anyone who has used mods for games before probably won't have any problems doing it.

Here are the instructions to safe you some time: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Installing_FreeSpace_2_Open

Don't forget about X:Rebirth which is coming out this year too.

I may get the original FS at GoG.

Don't get Freespace 1. Only Freespace 2 works with the source port and you can actually get a free version of Freespace 1 that is modified to function as a mod for Freespace 2 anyways (its basically exactly the same with the only difference being some interface differences, and I think even that can be changed as well with another mod).

Freelancer still holds up well, a tonne of mods and an fairly active mp community still.

edit: Just watched those trailers and I am defiantly going to getting this game.

Freespace might be viable, but there are other options. Much like the Wing Commander fan mod of FS2, Or Star Raiders, or Dark Star one and a few others. In short there is a resurgence of the genre.

However I DONT get the X series. It really seems like the X games do everything in their power to discourage players from getting into them. I own X2, X3 and the expansions up to albion, but I still have yet to be able to stomach playing more than 30 min of it. Usually Im all for no hand holding, but it would be nice to get a suggestion of where to start.

So can anyone explain the X series, cause I still dont get what I am supposed to be doing other than flying through random gates.

Thanks for the head up. It's a bit of an odd deal, why not just sell the fixed version of the original?

i just finished a play through of wingcommander 3 i got from GOG.com. still holds up well even after all these years. movies are a bit blurry but otherwise fine

Looks pretty good! I love space games. I still play the hell out of Sins of a Solar Empire and back in the day I put in more hours than I care to count between the Galactic Civilization series and the Masters of Orion series. Before that it was the Star Control 2 on the 3DO that got me into space games as a genre as well as the Wing Commander series on PC. I still have a notebook or two of graph paper with maps of the various planets and what resources were available on each one for Star Control 2.

Looks sweet.

while that does look nice, that is not my kind of game at all...i haven't noticed much complaining about lack of space games, but that isn't the kind of space game i'd be looking for.

may pick it up if i got some extra cash lying around and if i ever am in a taste for a game like that.

Still waiting for Novalogic to stop throwing out Delta Force expansions and get to work an a sequel to Tachyon: The Fringe. Or even for Relic to even suggest that a Homeworld 3 isn't out of the question.

The game only costs like 8 dollars in the first place, so......

So is this game closer in game play to Elite 2 or EVE?

I'm holding out for Infinity, really. I've always wanted to try my hand at a space sim that actually tries to use what we know about physics in its engine. Plus, seamless space-to-atmospheric flight is something I've always wanted in a game.

Been a long time since I popped in my old copies of Freespace and FS2, though... and I don't even have a floppy drive for TIE Fighter anymore. Have the discs, but nothing to run 'em on.

It's a new, fan-made Wing Commander game. For free. No more need be said.

I played through Freespace 1 a short time ago, and will play Freespace 2 sometime soon. I'm currently playing through Freelancer though... it's different (and is mouse-controlled, no joystick support), but it's fun. I suppose I'll try the Freespace Open stuff after that. Personally, I found that Freespace holds up extremely well for a 10+ year old game. No graphics mods or anything and it was still perfectly acceptable looking, and played wonderfully.

There's also Evochron (trading and space combat sim) and Arvoch (mission-based space combat), which can be found here, including demos. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet since I'm still working on the above list. Has anyone else played them?

I'm not convinced that the Freespace 1 "mod" for Freespace 2 would be technically legal. Someone can correct me if that's wrong though. Either way it's not owned by the publisher, so GOG couldn't licence the right to sell it.

The other change I heard is that the Freespace 1 mod for Freespace 2 doesn't have the original Freespace 1 music (which happens to be really good), so that's not ideal. But I just saw that from some random forum poster somewhere, so I'm not 100% on that.

Anyway, Freespace 1 + its expansion, and Freespace 2 are $5.99 each on GOG.com. You're not exactly breaking the bank to buy them both. And as I said above, Freespace 1 is still fantastic as is.

Yes! I played FreeSpace 1 with this mod. I have the second game too, but not played it yet. FS1 was ace!

I believe that they had permission.
