Should I trade in my 360 for a newer model?

As has been happening for the past couple of years, my Xbox 360 has started crashing regularly as the weather has warmed up. It's gotten to the point where I can only get in a few minutes of Deus Ex: Human Revolution (which I've barely gotten to play since I got it Saturday) before it shuts down completely, even with a fan running and having it up on blocks to let the air circulate.
So, should I trade it in for a new model at this point? I did my research, and a 250GB model is only $250 dollars at Gamestop (no better deals on Amazon, really), and the trade should take some of the bite off of that.

Any thoughts?

Well...if your current one is broken (or basically broken), you might as well.

I had the elite model (120GB Black) and I have the shiny black model (250 GB Black; Thanks Escapist!) and except for having an internal hard drive, the shiny new model is considerably better. The hard drive is much bigger (not that I really need it but it's nice to have) and I never realized how freaking loud the old model was compared to this one. Seriously, this new model is like a damn ninja!

If it's turning itself off like that, do you think they'll buy it?

I've actually been questioning something similar, though this is due to mine being a rather old model with limited harddrive space and just wondering whether or not it was worth it to invest in a newer model that seems to be much better designed.

For me, the answer was that as it stood, I played my PS3 more and would rather invest towards that, but that the option is still on the table in the future.

In deciding all this, first off, look at your budget or rough estimate of what you make vs what you spend on necessities. Then take a look at what you're going to be investing towards.
If you decide you want to keep your memory, you'll need a hard drive to copy things over with, which requires a lot of footwork to know just what to pick. If not, you still want to consider what sort of model you're actually in the market for. Due to the newer ones not having replacable hard drives, you're going to be stuck with whatever you get (unless you keep that hard drive from before if you got it set up for the Xbox). If you like to install games or play particularly large ones or just use the XBLA a lot then it's probably worth it to pick up a larger one. Otherwise, if you manage memory a bit more, you could probably go with a smaller hard drive and save some cash.

Also, remember that the used market isn't always a bad thing. If you're careful about the retailers, you might pick up a good deal and instead be able to trade your console in for more games. Just be careful here and really learn about the person you're buying from as well as how they plan to get it to you.

Really, the big question for how soon should you trade in if you decide to depends on both your budget and your gaming. If this problem is something that interferes with what you consider to be a major part of your life (and don't fear judgment for that, as there are certain people who can't go a day without music or else they just pile up stress), and you have the means to it, I'd say this is a worthy investment.
It's just a big investment, so seriously learn all you can before you commit.

They will test it at Gamestop for 30 minutes or so beforehand, doubt yours will make it through that

Snip

I can just transfer my saves and stuff through an external USB drive, right? That'll solve the problem of having that whole new hard drive to deal with.

I just bought a special cable that transfers the saves from one xbox to another.

Hm... If I'm trading right there, I doubt I'll be able to do that. I'll have to ask there, I suppose.

Just search on the internet if a memory stick/ harddrive works :P

I only did it the other way because i had to keep my bricked console...

1. have you tried installing the games on your hard drive?
2. get some quotes for how much it would cost to repair, it can be very cheap from small, local shops

as for switching I have had 2 models of elite 1 when it first launched and the slim, and in my mind there is little to no difference between the two, both have the same memory, take the same time to load and sound like a harrier taking of when i try and play skyrim/mw3

however the slim takes up less space and will overheat less (its practically coated in fans) so if thats a selling point to you i'd consider it, however you cannot remove the hardrive which can make DRM a pain.

if i were in your position i would try and get it repaired but failing that i'd buy whichever one is cheapest

I skipped all the other comments because of this:

GameStop is having a promotion right now where you trade in your 360 and they give you $50 more on top of whatever you get for your 360 originally. So roughly speaking, you should get around...$90-100? I don't know if you're planning on selling your 360 there when/if you go buy a new model, but there's that. Of course, it's a limited-time only promotion, so I dunno when it ends. Perhaps this Saturday?

Yes, current Gamestop employee here.

They will test your game but only for like 5 or 10 minutes. THey can't afford to sit down and play properly; time issues. Uhh...if you really wanna push your luck, clean your system, make it look awesome and just had it in and let them cast their own verdict. If they're not smart enough, they might take it in at full value. I mean, if your 360 heats up after a while, they might not catch that. In case they do, expect to get %20 less than the original amount. They'll take it as defective.

The only way they won't take your 360 is if it has a red ring of any sort.

As far as transferring your files, you could borrow a transfer cable from a friend if they have one? If not, I'd recommend buying a used one. Reason being is because you're only gonna use it once, right? If you buy it used, you can return it within 7 days for your money back, just like with any other used game. So transfer/save your stuff somewhere else and return it. Assuming that's a choice for you.

No, they won't let you transfer stuff right there. Again, time issue. You're supposed to bring your stuff ready to be formatted and stuff, I heard. As soon as you leave the store, people format whatever system you left there.

So yeah, get a new model. If you have a network adapter and your old HD, they will also take that. After all, you're not gonna need it for the new model.

Beautiful End:

Wow, thanks.
Turns out I can use an external drive I happened to have lying about to temporarily store the files until I get the new 360.

Oh, there ya go. Just be careful with that and the format you store the files. I don't know if the PS3 is the same but when i tried to back up my files with an external HD so I could get a bigger HD, I did something wrong and all my files got erased/couldn't be placed into the new HD/the HD was formatted anyway.

But that was the PS3. And me.
