Have you ever played through a game and completely missed a game play feature?

Oh, I know one, the Hacking in Fallout 3/NV. I played through both games 3-4 times each before learning that in the hacking mini game if you find [] {} () brackets, you can get duds removed and get your tries back.

yeah same here I never learned how to hack in fallout 3 or NV

i used the save and pray method myself

I would use 3/4 attempts and then back out so I get all 4 attempts back.

In Fallout: New Vegas, I missed out on Caravan until my second playthrough.

Then I found out it's the biggest pile of shit, so never mind.

Caravan is the most broken game ever.

If you play it against shop keepers, they use their shop cap stockpile to play Caravan with

It's also stupidly easy if you build your deck with just 6s, 8s, 9s, 10s and Kings. Play your 10s, play kings on them, place 6s on those, and win. Alternatively, play 9s, Kings on those, then play 8s on top of those. It's stupidly easy to win at Caravan once you know how to play it.

So basically, buy everything, then play Caravan with them to get all of your money back, and then sell the stuff to vendors that don't play caravan for their caps.

Mind=blown?

Note that vendors who play Caravan (the courier guy in Primm, the NCR outpost lady, the Dinosaur Gift Shop guy in Novac) will only play a few games before the game realizes what the heck it's letting you do and they stop, so make sure those games count.

Tis why you play Ambassador Crocker. He's rich and has unlimited tries.

Quicksave usually. Also, I do NOT use VATS in Fallout 3 or NV. I don't need it, the games aren't exactly difficult and I'm using a mouse-and-keyboard to play so using a crutch isn't necessary. Hell I don't even need armor!

Crank up the difficulty. You'd wish you had more AP then.

lolwut? I play both on max difficulty. It's still piss easy. And I suck at shooters.

I don't need VATS. I never use it. Never needed to use it.

Get realism mods! If that won't make it harder, I'm out <.<

And why would I want to make it harder? Harder is not necessarily better. Matter of fact, I prefer games that aren't hard.

I beat Halo: Combat Evolved on all modes (Legendary three times!), beat Halo 2 on Normal and Legendary and played multiplayer matches constantly, and it wasn't until some time in Halo 3 that I learned you could switch grenade types... Before that, I would have to throw all the regular grenades to be able to get to the plasma grenades!

Oh, when I discovered jump cancelling in DMC3

I played through all of Phantom Hourglass without encountering the "equip fairy to boost stats" mechanic. It might have been helpful.

Didn't know you could sprint in Minecraft.

For skyrim I didn't realize that if you blocked with the shield at the right time it would deflect the blow and do no damage to you, I thought you could just hold it and take less damage or try to dodge out of the way entirely. I know next Patton over here.

Lol, really? I'm a block Advocate (My first major character was a Block Specialist and it was awesome) and I didn't know that

Yeah I was really surprised when I did it by accident but after a while I managed to get a pretty good pattern down, not that I need it so much because I spend a day working to make dedrick armor but it's still good to know that heavy piece of metal on my arm isn't just for decoration.

This happened to me many times, but the one recent one that stood out was realizing Mass Effect had an ability to throw grenades after I beat the game.

once you get to a certain point that tidbit of info isn't very useful - with your shield up you're practically invincible with full Heavy Armor/Block. But it would have been nice of them to tell me that.

Yeah it would have made the beginning part's much easier.

I have had it happen a few times, 1st in me1 I didn't relise about about weapon mods until about halfway and I didn't know about slow mo in NFSMW until about 80% through the game.

These are the only two occasions I can think off, as since then I have always checked the controls and usually experiment with a game (mash buttons find out what stuff does). And figure out most features pretty quickly. I was surprised how many people didn't know how to sprint in a game or iron sight (bioshock). as soon as you start a game I find it's best to mash all the buttons and figure out what it all does.

In Witcher 2 I never once assigned any "mutagens" until the boss battle

I'm surprised at the lack of Metal Gear Solid series stuff listed.

I never used a cardboard box.
Never interogated a guard. (MGS3)
Never straped C4 to a guard's back.
Never listened for codec radio stations (MGS3)
Never blew up food and ammo stations. (MGS3)
Never called Nastasha. (MGS1)
Never listened to the ipod (MGS4)

And that;s just what I can't hink of off the top of my head.

Others:

Made it to the final boss of Dragon age origins without enchanting anything.
I've only ever seen a desperation movie in FFVI once.
Was several playthroughs of Resident evil before I knew you could rotate things inthe item screen.
Oh, and I have never picked up a prostitute in any GTA game.

I played through Bioshock about 5 times and did not once figure out that you could press a button to aim down the sights until someone posted on this forum that you could

also, pressing ALT to sprint in skyrim. though i didn't technically play all the way through

yeah, Desperation Moves in FF6 were so rare that they were sort of like... urban legends. Most people who played the game probably don't even know they exist.

I mean, I've played FF6 several times over the years and I've only seen them a handful of times. Certainly haven't seen everyones.

I wonder if Relm's has ever happened in the history of the game.

cause who the fuck uses Relm.

Edit: excepting of course for glitching the game with hilarious results

I had been playing Geometry Wars for months and didn't know about the bomb. I only found out it existed because my mom bumped into my controller when I was playing.

In FFX i dint realise you could use the orbs to make your character stronger till i fought Yunalesca needless to say my hours of grinding payed off when i finally found it out

...but....but.... how!? (did you actually manage to get that far with characters you had left with 'level 1' stats. I can understand why you didn't know how to use the sphere system, i was smashing the 'o' and 'x' button as quick as i could through that boring text tutorial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW2MRBpTCps

That's how. And without abusing certain items like Trio 9999 or Aeon summons.

Speak for yourself. I don't enjoy 'hard' games. I play games to feel like an absolute badass that doesn't give a damn about incoming damage and can wreck whatever he wants.

Then... why play it on the highest difficulty? didn't you say that you did?

There is such a thing as too easy. If I play it on the easiest setting I rocket through the levels so fast I'm maxed out before I get out of Novac just about. Every other step is an XP bucket. I may not want a challenge but I still want some sort of resistance. Still want it to feel like it isn't a pop-up shooting gallery.

If I'm perfectly honest the hardest difficulty in FO3 and NV should have been the easiest.

Not really. Maybe resorting to super long range edge-of-draw-distance sniping and letting Veronica handle the cazadores counts as a trick?

Idunno. I find NV and FO3 piss easy even on max.

I did speak for myself.

played halfway through dark souls without knowing how to jump, played through a second time found out i could aim first person mode with a bow and how OP magic is pve wise

I remember nearly ragequitting a Final Fantasy because I didn't know I could save in the overworld. Can't remember which one.

I went through Alpha Protocol without knowing about stealth-kills. I just knocked out everyone. Not that big a deal but it does explain some taunts about being a naive pacifist I got.

Justyn Stahll:
Did'nt know how to Quicksave in Stalker: Clear Sky, until I hit F5 on accident

As a Kid I also never learned how to use Sabin's (Final Fantasy 6)Blitz moves and thought he was useless...
Suplex...my best friend

I still don't know how you're supposed to do the diagonal directions on most of his moves with a 4 direction pad.

FFX - I didn't know how to use the sphere grid until Operation Mi'hen. Do you have any idea how hard it is to kill the bosses at that stage without taking advantage of the level-up system?? I eventually figured it out and trounced its ass no problem... it was actually kinda cool to get so ridiculously strong immediately like that...

What's a Desperation move? o.0 No seriously, ive never heard of it and I finished FF6 not long ago.

Well, at least this'll make getting irradiated for Moira in Fallout 3 go a bit faster from now on...

Wow.
Just Wow.
How did I not know that.
I'm going to go and rethink my life.

I know how you feel.

Shit, I'm just now realizing that I've wasted about an hour of my life.

Holy crap - I'm playing Fallout 3 now and never knew that... I guess it isnt exactly too late though? I still have some add-ons and side quests left to just hold A instead =D

They're kind of like limit breaks. When a character's HP gets low enough a normal attack may become a power super move. It's rather rare though. Like I said, I've only seen it once, and I've played through a couple dozen times.

I learned of a quick-save on one game, then realized that about 50% games have quick-save buttons which are easily bindable. I felt very derpy.....

Despite playing as a Vanguard, I never thought to use any of the more obvious Biotic powers on my first playthrough of Mass Effect 1.
