Poll: What Game Genre is your favorite? [Statistics Project]

 Pages PREV 1 2

DrgoFx:
I'd hate to do this but bump? I'd really like to pass this course, so...And I'd rather not purchase fifty packages of skittles and color categorize them.

Would be a very tasty way to do your project though :)

Voted RPG btw

This is a little one-sided. I voted RPG, too.

That's a hard choice for me. I said RPGs, but I have pretty specific tastes in them. I don't like JRPGs, but I love BioWare games and I actually enjoyed Fable and its sequels.

Then again, I'm also heavy into shooters, though not like I used to be. I dislike where shooters have gone. I wish FPS games today were more Halo and less Call of Duty. Or, even better, more Rainbow Six Vegas and less Call of Duty. But that's my thing, so whatever.

RPGs it is.

EDIT: If that poll is indicative of the Escapist as a whole, then wow. I had no idea RPGs were that popular here.

I always had a suspicion that the Escapist was an RPG-fan hangout. I seem to remember that shooters are statistically the best-selling video game genre (ignoring phone and browser games).

Personally, I'm torn between shooter and action-adventure. I went for the latter as I've had more fun with those recently.

I selected the RPG option, but I'd like to be a bit more specific. To be precise, I'd like to be three letters more specific.

I'm sure you see where I'm going with this.

I voted RPG.

I'm majoring in Economics at the moment and do a lot of statistical analysis, what exactly are you trying to do here btw?

Most likely I'll be doing a Chi-Squared Analysis of the "Goodness of Fit." I wanted to see if my original hypothesis of Shooters being the public favorite with RPG close behind was true. Clearly it isn't so far.

I think your hypothesis was good. Sales seem to indicate that shooters outsell other genres. But you picked a site with a lot of RPG fans. ;)

Maybe look up sales figures for a selection of recent games in each genre and use those as your data instead.

DrgoFx:
Hey Escapists. I have a final project for statistics that involves me writing my own analysis and gathering my own data. So my question is what is your favorite gaming genre? I tried to list online the popular ones...Tried is the key word. In case any is left off, there's an other option.

Edit: Just because this does need discussion, go ahead and explain why. I didn't really think that needed to be mentioned, lol.

As for myself I prefer RPGs over anything. I like roleplaying and they have been close to me for a while now. My first computer game was Fable: The Lost Chapters, and I had a lot of fun with it.

I have no idea what you are studying so I'll just assume it's statistics for the sake of statistics, I'd be really amazed if they gave you any points for this.
It would be an easy assignment to write up for a pshychology class.

I am really surprised to see RPGs have a huge lead. I thought it would have been close between RPGs and FPSes.

Action adventure I guess. Specifically adventure games such as Professor Layton, Ghost Trick and Portal (basically puzzle adventures I guess).

Other.Platformers have always been my fav genre closely followed by Action Rpgs and Action-Adventures

this was really hard, between RPG and Shooter. went with shooter cause ive had a lot more fun with friends online in games like L4D, Borderlands, HL2 deathmatch, TF2 and such. oddly enough despite choosing shooter i have never actually played COD/BF/other military shooter.

I chose horror because they usually have a very good story behind all the suspense and the fear it leaves me.

I voted for Rocket Propelled Grenades, like most other people it seems. Partly its for the same reasons that a lot of other people have mentioned (characters, story) but another part of it is if I'm going to be buying a (predominantly single player) game, I'd much rather I have one that takes more than four hours to complete. So yeah, while I like me some Uncharted action, or maybe some Dead Space, I find it somewhat disappointing when I look at the save file for the end of game and find out I've completed it in less time than I spend on an average sleep.

RPG's are my fav! Japanese or western, don't care, they both have pros and cons.

Also love Visual Novels like Ace Attorney and am getting 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors in the post, looking forward to it.

Poll is sorely missing the strategy genre. Not all strategy is real-time (RTS).

Completely missing are the vehicle simulation genres (racing, flying, etc).

Horror isn't a gameplay genre, but a setting. Can be a shooter or an action-adventure; can even be a point&click or text adventure.

Would be a very weak poll for serious analysis, but fortunately at the Escapist, the vast majority fap on CRPGs anyway, so you'd even get away just 2 options: RPG and other. Actually that would be better than this; less overlap.

Er well I like JRPGs and I don't know if that counts as RPGs. And I like strategy games but I prefer turn based ones not real time so not really RTS. So I put other.

Yeah if the goal was to see how the escapist community differed from the gaming community as a whole I could understand. though in that case you'd still need numbers for the gaming community at large. But to say the escapist community is representative of the gaming community as a whole is incorrect.

But that being said this is for a statistics class not something to show to a board of investors to get them to fund your RPG project. Or to put it another way these numbers don't have any real world implications (besides passing this class). So as long as he's aware that this kind of thing doesn't work in real life I see no harm.

RPG for me as well. It's a really broad genre though. My favorite genre is JRPGs, followed by action-adventure. WRPGs are tied for third with hack'n'slash. Though I would have broken down the genres more like this:

1 Shooters
2 Simulators
3 Strategy
4 Action/Adventure
5 Puzzle
6 WRPGs
7 Other RPGs
8 Other

At least it would break up the RPG and have more broad definitions for the others to get more votes.

We all know this is the only true way to define a genre. But I guess in your poll, I'd choose Action/adventure, with RPG being a close second.

Thank you for pointing me too that. It's a little late to change the poll, I would think but thanks for point it out. Definitely a better way at defying genres.

It'd probably be easier to make a poll from, given the broader definitions. I really like the genre wheel, though I like genres from around all points of the wheel.

Hazy992:
I voted other for sandbox games

I don't think that's a genre, just more of a category to a genre itself.

Just Cause 2 : Action Sandbox

Skyrim: RPG Sandbox

Assassin's Creed: Action/Adventure Sandbox

Crysis: FPS Sandbox.

RPG's.
As in Baldurs Gate, Fallout 1/2 and Neverwinter Nights.

action/adventure though i do like RPGs too

shooter but just because i have just logged of a very satisfying session of UT2004.i will probably open diablo 2 and change my mind in 10 minutes.

I appear to be one of the lucky few who voted RTS. Am I right to assume that this includes Turn Based Strategy as well? Otherwise I'd probably have voted RPG, as most of my favourite strategy games are Turn Based.

I vote for 'fun'. Any genre can be 'fun' if the game's built right.

....except JRPG. Nobody builds JRPGs right.

I was torn between fighting and horror. Most of my gaming life has been about those two ,genres plus adventure and casual, but i ended up voting fighting because is what i've only played lately.

Horror: It started with parasite eve and silent hill. I liked the thrill about being about to die and being afraid of the enemies. the design, the suspense, clunky controls, melee weapons, save points, etc.

Fighting: I love doing combos and the strategy required, my favorit series is the king of fighters but I started with MK, World Heroes, X-men mutant academy and other games i cant remember then moved to darkstalkers, street fighter alpha and capcom's vs series all of the previous in arcade. My friends and I that are fighting games geeks still gather every weekend to play and make tournamets with people from other cities.

captcha: donkey's years

WTF

Edit: First vote for fighting FTW

Action-Adventure because I like my gameplay, then RPGs because I like my plot.

Personally, I voted shooter, but it really is a tough question to answer. I love being able to play as a character I flesh out myself and identify, but more often than not, most of the 'RPG's that I've played ended up being a shooter of some kind too. Take Fallout: New Vegas, or Mass Effect 2-3 for example.

But, for me, the fact is that having fun shooting stuff, ends up being a higher priority for my gaming than being able to roleplay at the same time.

Though, I've noticed threads like these popping up fairly often. Apparently the Escapist is pretty good for students who need help on their schoolwork. All the same, I wish you luck on your assignment!

Kind of a toss up between RPG and shooter (What with my favourite games being one or the other)
But in the end with mmorpg's included, I'll have to go with RPG

A good horror game has the potential to have much more psychological impact on you than a good shooter; shooters are built for short term adrenaline rushes and the fun of competition, horror games are built to fuck with you.

Zhukov:
Visual novels.

The more tentacles the better.

^^ What that guy said

I like them because, since there is no gameplay, they can focus on better developed(or just)characters, awesome stories and such, for similar reasons i like rpgs, although,i find most turn based rpgs to be boring(rougelikes excluded),i mainly play Tales games since the combat is usually akin to that of fighting games(without frustrating stick movements).

I also like plataformers, why?,i dont know, probably since most of the plataformers i have tried are pretty damn good(Castlevania Hd,Hard Corps uprising),and because you(normally)dont have to wrestle with the camera, actually i have no idea why i like them, i just do.
I actually like most genres,but i prefer the 3 i mentioned above.

probably should've used "Strategy" rather than "RTS"...results would've been more representative
