Games That Aged Horribly

What are some games you remember liking, or even loving, but can no longer bring yourself to play at all? Maybe the controls are outdated, maybe the visuals haven't aged well, maybe taking two hours to sift through your inventory is no longer your thing...

For me, it's Fallout 3. I got it when it first came out, thought it was fun, but never finished. Tried to pick it up again a few weeks ago and I couldn't stand more than 10 minutes of it. The combination of graphics and visual style did me in. Graphics get outdated, there's no curing that, and most of the time I can get over it. But when everything is so unappealingly brown and gray... it might have added to the atmosphere at the time, but now, it's just a dreary visual mess. Guess I'll never finish it now. :(

What's your tragic story of nostalgia failing to overcome the passage of time?

not many so far to be fair most hold up pretty well the only ones I was really dissapointed with were super metroid on the snes (were the controls always this bad?)and Bubble Bobble on the C64 (its like I remembered but the controls are too unresponsive to me now).

There is probably a load more games for the C64 that would dissapoint me now as well but bubble bobble was my favourite and the only game I have left for it but a lot of games from NES onwards (that I played originally) I can still play no probs.

Its gota be the Original deus ex for me, one of the ugliest games ive ever played.

GTA III is pretty much unplayable for me because of its awful controls.

The Return of the King game, one of the few Movie licenced games ever that was good.
But when I tried it again a while back it just wasn't that good anymore.
The graphics aged horribly, the gameplay is stale and repetitive, etc. A damn shame. Oh how I long for a new good LOTR game...

This is so true but no-one seems to mention it. When was the last time people actually played this game? I've tried to get in to it (and VC) several times long after they came out and I've never been able to get past the abysmal controls. the graphics are also pretty poor too.

What the hell , nostalgia ? Fall out 3 ? That game isn't that old. Geez . People sure are spoiled .

OT : Fear effect . God i loved that game back in the day . But the controls and the disk swapping in random orders make me cringe , add the trial and error and god it's terrible .

Not really that old but Oblivion falls a bit flat now-a-days. My mate bought it recently for his xbox and he thought it was glitched due to the draw distance and took it back to the shop.

Jesus Christ, Fallout 3 hasn't even aged yet!

Sadly, the Commander Keens controls just feel too clunky for me to get into too much again. Played the hell out of them as a kid, but the slight response time in the jumps and air control just put me off. If it felt like Super Mario when moving I'd still play the hell out of it.

Tried replaying Max Payne in anticipation for MP3...

Shooters sure have come a long way.

Most Early PS1, Saturn, and N64 era games haven't aged well at all.

Sega Rally's cars looks like cardboard boxes on wheels, and Goldeneye looks so sparse and blocky it begs belief.

Snes and Mega Drive games however are timeless no matter how old they are. I always find myself playing some among all of the newer games I play. Most of the ones I've played, i find still hold up rather well to this day.

I'm sorry JC, but you didn't age gracefully...

DOOM, I just can't get past what is a completely awkward interface + mechanics for a first person shooter and textures and animations which don't excite or stimulate me in the slightest. Then again, I never played it when I was younger, so I don't have the sort of nostalgia that some hold.

Contrast that with Deus Ex, which I really enjoyed and immersed myself in despite a complete lack of nostalgia. It's all in the details, I think. Very linear, simple games don't age as well as those with more depth and freedom.

Never had any problem with GTA III or Vice City controls.
Had a huge one with GTA IV, I haven't finished it because I can't stand the godawful controls.

Not enough walls to cover behind or autoaim for you? The graphics are a bit outdated, but the gameplay is still good, fun and fast and the John Woo in the time when he wasn't shit type of plot is still awesome.

Final Fantasy VII didn't age well... It was superstimated when as first released, but it was a good in it's own right, but now I almost unplayable.

Duke Nukem.
oh. god. why.

wait, are we talking about games that looked bad now or are we talking about games that became bad but were good earlier?

The ones that were at some point good, I hope. Otherwise it's just another thread about bashing stuff you don't like. :P

The original Call of Duty. Wanted to give it a go after I'd watched Enemy at the Gates and... well, it has not aged gracefully at all. Pity because I really have some fond memories of that game, but the mechanics just aren't all that good today and the visuals haven't exactly held up well either.

To take things just a bit further back than Fallout 3...

7th Saga on the SNES. Never finished it back when it first came out.I tried to play it again last year. I thought it was hard when I was little, but it turns out level grinding is just super tedious. Barely get an xp even for enemies that take quite a while to kill. Still looks pretty good though.

A small list from me.

1. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (seriously that game has aged worse then Daggerfall, and Daggerfall is even older!)
2. Deus Ex (will always be remembered as a great game, but man when you take a peak at the voice acting in todays age, just...wow. Horrible lol)
3. Mortal Kombat II (with the way fighting games have evovled today, this game is just hard ot even pick up and attempt to play now.)
4. Planscape Torment (special game, but can require A LOT OF PATIENCE and you have to do a lot of reading.)
5. Pretty much any turn based game from late 80s and 90s.

Thats all I got.

Is that fat Steven Segal?

I recently started playing Mass Effect 1. I know it's not that old but the combat upgrades from the 2nd and 3rd make this painful to slug through.

pretty much everything from the NES era, excluding a few platformers and action games, but especially RPGs and Strategy games. Ditto for 3D PS1, N64, and Saturn games. They are ugly as hell 99% of the time and Controls didn't always work for the best.

Saying this in front of Gen 1ers is pretty much sacrilege, but pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow have aged horrible. They're all a glitchy, unbalanced, ugly mess.

Really every series that started in the first major era of a new dimension in video games(Atari to NES for 2D, PS1 & N64 era fro 3D). The developers didn't really know how to make the games work at the time, so the original versions of long running series are pretty bad by today's standards, given the amount of polishing they've done.

the first Halo, while it was amazing at the time no it is actually just painful to play (unless you are split-screening shit up, huge shame more games don't have that option)

Goldeneye and any shooter in PS1. The graphics are so butt-ugly. Oh, and the WWE Smackdown series. Last good one was Here Comes the Pain.

Really? I played Anniversary (and had played the original ver) and it felt actually smoother and more fluid then most recent shooters.

Oblivion started showing its age almost immediately after it was released. Also, the original fallouts just feel so goddamn clunky. They haven't aged well at all imo.

Shin Megami Tensei I and II. I tried playing the English patch of them and just...ugh...I mean they look kinda decent for games at that time, but they just don't play well. Automatically talking to invisible NPCs if you bump into them on the map, countless first person identical corridors, etc. etc.

They evolved into something great, but I just can't go back and try to maneuver with those. I just don't have the patience.

Third-person shooters without precision aiming are just painful. I'm pretty sure Max payne 1 did have auto-aim, and that was about the only way it was playable on consoles. I know cover is a dirty word these days, but a shooter without that dynamic is basically a shooting gallery. The story is still good.

call of duty (the infinity ward games)
a good example of this is the kill streaks
cod4: perfect
mw2: you got a 7 killstreak congrats you win the game with a nuke!
mw3: useless. no dont mention the abomination that is support! i still have flash backs! I never want to here the letters E,M or P again

or the maps
cod4: brilliance
mw2: average
mw3: cluster fuck

or the campaign
cod4:good
mw2:average
mw3: i want to gouge my eyes out with forks

Oblivion for me. I just... can't stand the graphics anymore. Strangely enough Morrowind is fine, but 30 minutes into Oblivion I go 'Fuck this!' and play something that doesn't cause eye-bleeding.

Also Pokemon Red/Blue - sad to say, but I just can't play them anymore. The graphics still has the nice nostalgia to it, but the gameplay is SEVERELY broken. Thankfully Fire Red/Leaf Green are still good to play, so the world of Kanto isn't lost to me just yet.

I'd didn't think that Max Payne had clunky controls when I first played it a year ago. The Bullet time counter balanced whatever aiming difficulties I had.

Wolfenstein 3D will always hold a special place in my heart. That being said, it's nigh unplayable nowadays. Everything from the control scheme to the graphics to the level design is severely, but understandably, outdated.

Conker's Bad Fur Day isn't... it isn't good anymore.

Also, Deus Ex is awful.

I'm probably going to get some flack for this but.....

I can't stand playing Morrowind. It always starts out pretty good but ends when I can't get immersed in the game due to the downright hilarious animations.

Guard: Follow me prisoner, we will release you into Morrowind.
Me: Alright, lets do this.
*Guard proceeds to walk like he just shit himself.*

Half-Life 1 has aged pretty well in terms of visuals and gunplay, but the level design is TERRIBLE compared to Half-Life 2.

Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 are just not very engaging, or at least they haven't been since Fallout 3 and F:NV.

Fortunately, most RTS games like Empire Earth have aged pretty well.

Captcha: it will pass
Kind of makes sense in this context.

im really curious. what did you think was awkward about the interface and mechanics?

i replayed deus ex a couple of months ago. we may be in the minority but its still just as good as i remembered.

i agree with you about the open world vs linear in terms of aging

i tried to play neverwinter nights the other week thats going to take some effort to get into again

FO3...dated, REALLY? REALLY?!

Damn do I feel old now.

Um...IDK...

Maybe FF7/8?

FF7 was never terribly good, but it's aged even worse.
-The extended verse isn't helping.

FF8 is still a favorite of mine, but I've been having a hard time playing it as of late.
Maybe I've replayed it too much, or maybe my tastes have changed, but the game just feels like a chore to play anymore.

In-fact, MOST PS1 games don't seem to age very well for me.
