Escapists: What is your definition of "Fun"?

I think the word "Fun" is getting thrown around a lot, but not a lot of people seem to consider it a subjective thing, which is bad. I know that what I consider fun can be entirely different to what someone else considers fun.

So, what do you consider fun?

Me? Well, I consider basically anything that gives me a nice adrenaline rush to be fun. Whether it be through combat, skydiving, flying a plane, or driving fast, anything that gives me a nice rush of that good stuff I get on a roller coaster is what I consider to be fun.

I also consider doing silly and illogical things that the real world would consider completely stupid to be fun. For example, taking the police on in a shootout in GTA, or going the wrong way on purpose in a nascar game, or stealing military equipment and vehicles in broad daylight and running from them while shooting down their helicopters and killing their soldiers and also lots of police and civilians because why not. Or wrecking cars on purpose. That kind of thing. I also like doing things I could not possibly do in the real world. Like piloting a jet or engaging in huge giant robot/mecha battles or doing magic.

Well, that's my kind of fun for you. Now, what do you consider fun?

Something I can interact with somehow, and enjoy doing so.

I'm going by your original question, not "what things do I consider fun," because otherwise I'd be here half a day.

Fun: something that makes me laugh (my favorite), something that produces an emotional response that isn't in my "frustration" spectrum, or something where the simple motor mechanics provide enjoyment.

"Fun" is anything I enjoy doing.

Which can vary widely between games that have nothing in common.

While I find committing genocide with Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors 5 to be fun, I also enjoy moving spies across the countryside while recruiting civilians in Dynasty Tactics 2.

While I enjoy successfully assassinating someone in Mercenaries without being seen and then ordering an airstrike on them for the lulz, I also find comparing the societal and political aspects of factions in Fallout: New Vegas to be fun.

"Fun" is different for everyone.

"Fun" is any pleasing visceral feedback I can get from active experiences.

Contrast this with engagement, entertainment, and fulfillment.

"Something that I wish to continue doing for its own sake."

OT: Anything I enjoy doing, and will continue to do because I want to

Fun is where I can do something for ages without noticing that time has passed so quickly.

Losing in dwarf fortress.
Otherwise an action that elicits a pleasurable response from my brain.

Fun is when I enjoy something.

Well, that was easy.

Crushing my enemies, seeing them driven before me, and hearing the lamentation of their women.

Fun is something that keeps me focused on some form of art because it's well made.

Whatever makes me happy at that particular moment.

I can't be any clearer than that.

The truth is clearly buried deep within myself, behind walls of mirrors, and burning quagmires. Of thundering hoof and whispering tree, these are my own silent witnesses.

I enjoy doing it. End of.

And now I will rant about the hipster culture.

If you stop doing something that is fun because it is mainstream or uncool/cool (I will forgive moral reasons) then you are an idiot, Like MLP? Go for it. Like Drawing MLP characters being bummed by Dexter from Dexter's Lab? Knock yourself out. If it doesn't hurt other people and you like it, then go for it.

People who judge other because they like things you don't either like or consider Fun or Cool are utter tools.

Games wise I love exploration mostly. I love the 'other world' aspect of gaming.

Oh, just as little "game" I fondly refer to as "Stalking the Elderly".

Pleasurable activities.

Fun in terms of video games, is going through a game for several hours, not knowing how much time has passed, and enjoying it in a happy and pleasurable way. You just feel awesome playing the game. THAT's fun.

Anything emotionally satisfying. To define it more would take a while.

Running with dogs.

With all due credit to Mr. Busey...Finally Understanding Nothing.

But seriously, if it's an activity I remember as being something I enjoyed and would like to do again at some point, I probably would consider that "fun."

This. It's why I have a hard time taking people who make a distinction between games that are fun and games that are "engaging" seriously. All videogames should be fun, end of story. If you're enjoying it, you're having fun. If you're not, why on earth are you playing it? To look good with your snobby games as art friends?

I don't want a dictionary definition of fun I want what you specifically consider fun. Mayhem, silly stuff, grinding, what?

If you watch a really sad movie and it makes you cry, are you having fun? Sure, you're enjoying the movie; that's why it's affecting you on such an emotional level. Yet most people would not use fun as a descriptive term for something tragic and heart-wrenching. When people use "fun" in that context they are referring to the difference between light-hearted messing about, blowing things up, etc. compared to a game with actual meaning and gravity.

If a game has enough meaning and gravity not to be fun, it's a bad game. It might be a good interactive movie or whatever you want to call it, but games are games, not movies. If you want to stretch the definition of "game" to include stuff like that, microsoft office is a videogame.

Edit: And I'm not talking about the flight sim Easter egg in Excel '97, either.

Something I enjoy doing and want to keep on doing.

Or you could have used a dictionary...

Zhukov:
"Something that I wish to continue doing for its own sake."

This is a good as definition for my feelings as anything I was going to say. I second this.

Dr.Panties:
Oh, just as little "game" I fondly refer to as "Stalking the Elderly".

I can top that. Just let me throw on my hooded black cloak and foam skull mask and grab my scythe. I'm off to the local retirement home to tap on windows.

Not so directly tied to adrenaline as the OP, as I consider things like reading a good book or cuddling up with my wife and watching a movie to be fun.

Fun is anything wherein I can think, "I'd rather be doing this than anything else that is reasonably feasible." i.e. I'd pretty much always be rather exploring another planet. But right now, there are about 50 things I'd rather be doing than working, so today has not thus far been "fun". However, reading the escapist is more fun than anything else I can think to be doing on this 15 min break.

Oh, yeah. Explaining what makes something fun is hard. But this... this is easy.

My definition of fun is something that I either enjoy doing or don't mind repeating over and over again 'cause it'll lead to something I enjoy.
