Absolutely breathtaking, Gensokyo in Minecraft

Reginald:
How have you not heard of this? It's easily better known than Doom, Half-Life, or Halo. This forum is filled with awful, abnormal philistines who probably think Akira Kurasawa is a type of high-powered motorcycle. I have no have respect whatsoever for this site, which I have posted on over two thousand times. Ya'll can go to hell and die, twice! In all seriousness, though, if Touhou was as big as MLP, we'd all know about it. The fact that most of us, on a board focused on video and computer games, don't know about it is a fairly clear indication that it isn't actually well known.

LilithSlave:
Seriously though, Touhou is a pretty big internet meme on the level of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Perhaps I have an internet-y idea of what is famous, and tend to assume most folks on the internet are up on internet trends. Kind of like how Burzum feels mainstream, even though Black Metal itself is underground.

In terms of being well known, Touhou is to MLP as Abruptum is to Darkthrone. I can't believe I just compared MLP to Darkthone, but there you go.

I was about to report you, but then i noticed you were doing that thing that people do, and it was a funny.

Lillith, we get it, you hate people because you can't buy japanese games, and it is our fault for not wanting them enough to get localized. but even if i know what touhou is doesn't mean i care about it in any fashion.

Never heard of Gensokyo. But "Touhou" is at least a combination of letters that I recognise.

If it really is such a big thing, then I've probably seen stuff from this series around the internet loads of times. But all anime girls look the same to me (and I'm not a big RPG fan), so I couldn't tell you for sure. *shrug*

Minecraft video is quite impressive though.

Reginald:

You have posted over two thousand times? Your account has 5 posts, were you banned or what?

Edit Shit, I didn't read enough. Ignore this.

Matthew94:
Lilithslave sure knows how to rub people up the wrong way.

"oh? You haven't heard of the world of an old, obscure, Japan only game from a near dead genre? I have no respect for you"

You need to take a step back. Not everyone has to like and know what you like and know.

Hipster Weeaboo, its like a normal Hipster, but the undergroundness is multiplied. Thing is, I play Visual Novels but I literally didnt 'know' any other words for a western website focusing on japaneese stuff full of people who knows and loves japaneese stuff, and marks all western gaming as 300kg men smashing aliens with their bare fists.

Genso-what now?

Well... uh... it's very pretty I guess. Although in my eyes it doesn't hold a candle to the WoW one though in terms of scale, detail or general prettiness.

Anyway, while I'm here...

Lilith, you seem to take it rather personally when people don't know about or discuss the games you like. Quite frankly, it makes you come across as arrogant, petty and more than a little obnoxious.

It would be like me getting annoyed at you because I've never seen you talk about, say, Mirror's Edge.

Nikolaz72:
300kg men smashing aliens with their bare fists.

Funny thing is that sounds more like Dragon Ball Z than anything western.

Huh. Learn somethin' every day. I'd read the word "Touhou" mentioned in passing before, but never bothered looking it up. A series of bullet hell shooters and 2-D fighting games that are often fan-developed, is it? Neat.

LilithSlave:

Daystar Clarion:
Some JRPG thing we're supposed to recognise, apparently.

Y'all gotta be trolling if you're claiming you don't know what one of the biggest video game memes and subcultures ever is. You know, the one that makes the My Little Pony fandom look small and inactive by comparison.

You making a joke that it is some jRPG definitely pushes it over the top and is hard to believe y'all are being serious. Well played y'all, well played.

Hey y'all, what's an Elder Scrolls? I have no idea what an Elder Scrolls is.

Touhou isn't really that popular outside of it's fanbase, and even in it's fanbase only a small part will recognize the word Gensokyo. Since much of the lore of Touhou is estabished in doujins and fan-spinoffs that narrows it down further.

I doubt it's fandom is bigger than MLP, though they might overlap to some extent.

Maybe you should try explaining what you are talking about to those that don't know it instead of insulting them for not knowing it yet?

Well, now I finally know what the Touhou tag on Rule 34 is fo- I have said too much.

It's kinda funny, it is. People who don't know about Touhou will say it's "oh some weaboo bullet hell shooter which went out of style ten years ago", completely ignorant of the big ass community and a shitload of fanworks which lie beneath the surface.
It only changes once you actually start peeling that onion and you'll notice it has infinite layers.
Hundreds upon thousands of different fanworks ranging from Youtube videos, songs, books, comics and games, to name a few. It's all right there in front of you and you just don't see it until it's too late and you're sucked up in the endless vortex of content. (Yes, I play Hisoutensoku, and yes, I'm bitter because it cost me my soul)
It's the thing that still keeps Touhou alive and popular.

Jynthor:
Well, now I finally know what the Touhou tag on Rule 34 is fo- I have said too much.

Is it bad that unfortunate Rule 34 google searches are also what brought Touhou into my periphery vision?

To me it's more surprising that this thread quickly became a thread about Touhou's notability than about what the OP intended. I figured the non-Touhou fans would just ignore it.

It's incredibly popular, there is no doubt about that. But whether it's popular enough to garner the attention of audiences unfamiliar with the doujin scene is up to debate it seems.

On topic: thank you for bringing this to my attention Lilith Slave. From what I saw, I liked the detail. But it brings to mind a question: can you make a separate moon in minecraft? (for the Lunarians and such)

Also were you intending your post to be very polarizing? (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Not to be hipster, but I knew of the project a year ago[hipster glasses]
Also, why are you surprised that not everyone knows about Touhou, op? It has amazing presence on the internet but only for people who know how to find it. Of course, there are going to be people who do not know of and probably blindly disregard it.
I mean, There are those who are quick to use the word "Weeabo" for anything remotely Japanese.

And even with the Bazillions and zillions of Music remixes spanning EVERY genre under the sun, fan games, fan videos, art, conventions and all around a fan base that makes the Brony fandom look like sloths, there will be those who will be wary of a "Japanese game about little girls fighting each other with millions of fans".

I don't think that though. I think Touhou is awesome.

Back on topic for the sake of the poor Op: Like I said, I've seen this a long time ago already but it's nice to be reminded of it again. back then it was still unfinished and put on hiatus. I hope they'll be able to get back to work on it(Hopefully before the next game or official work where there'll be a whole new area to build along with an increased cast roster of at least 6)

I know very little about Touhou except what I've picked up from TvTropes, and this...

(There are english subtitled versions as well, but I thought I'd link the one with finnish subtitles for extra wtf... well, unless you are finnish I guess.}

this "Touhou fanbase" sounds less like a subculture fanbase and more like a cult.....

i have never heard of touhou before in my life and i had no idea what it was until someone linked an article. Now if the OP mentioned "bullet hell" game then i might have had an inkling as ive seen ONE video of bullet hell gameplay footage from a strange tangent forum post on wow. i doubt any of my video game friends have heard of touhou. If there are millions of fans, then there are maybe a handful in the states.

there is nothing wrong with liking a niche genre, i think most of us here are guilty of this in some way or another. I, for example, like Disgaea games and games published by a small company named paradox (mount and blade, majesty, magicka). however i would consider it normal if nobody has heard of them.

Then you've just lost your right to ever play video games again.

I'll be taking your license to play video games now. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

:P

I'm really sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what your talking about. The Minecraft map looks super cool and incredibly epic, but I have no idea what it is based off of. I'll go search it up when I have the chance.

LilithSlave:

Hazy992:
Nope, genuinely no idea what it is. In fact you mentioning it is the first I've ever heard of it.

If this is true, and I still assert that I'm being trolled. Well... I didn't realize it were possible for my opinion of the Escapist to go any lower.

If you want to look up what it is, all the information is in this thread. Therefor I don't need to tell you anything more. It is arguable the most famous shooting game in the world. Or certainly one of them. And I am one of several million hardcore fans that have been following it religiously for probably around a decade or close to it.

Never heard of it either before this thread. My introduction though has been this: All the fans of it that I know of are the extremely obnoxious type who feel compelled to assert their superiority over those who haven't.

As a result, I really don't have any desire to learn any more about it.

This whole forum has gone to the trolls on both sides none of you are right http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT3GSZAfoI9IDiYg-35aKCOrd8gAFrQFoFbKEJysYqv_7Tg_GEjXHT9XwOf1A (don't know how to do spoilers)

I have a feeling this is all part of Lilith's Hipster 101 course. Like, a final exam on taking pretentiousness and snobbishness to the highest degrees imaginable.

OT: Video is highly impressive, but I don't know or care what this Gensyoko/"Toohoo" thing is. GUESS I HAVE TO GIVE UP GAMING FOREVER HUH

Yeah, not watching 45 minutes of Minecraft when I can watch some guys take the piss out of FF 13-2.
I skimmed through it though. Eh. Nothing really impresses me in Minecraft any more.

I did try out Touhou once. Though it was a fighting game, not a shooter. It was all in Japanese and didn't seem very good.

Lovely Mixture:

Also were you intending your post to be very polarizing? (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Intentional or not, this is what many of her threads end up like.

LilithSlave:

lacktheknack:
Great. Is there any way for me to legally acquire a copy without having to learn Japanese?

You don't need to know Japanese to play it. As other have stated, it's a shoot em' up. It doesn't actually need a story, for playing, at least. Major fandom, yeah you might kinda want to know what they're saying. Playing, no.

And there's lots of places that sell it. J-List of course being one of them(if the site's porny-ness doesn't scare you off), and I'm sure Gensokyo.org knows all the best places to buy it. They have a very strict no-piracy policy. Also, patching isn't illegal.

So it never got an official Western release and you're wondering why no-one around here has heard of it? Seriously? That's not to mention the fact that bullet hell shooters aren't that popular in the West anyway.

I've heard of Touhou before though only because I used to post on a Yugioh forum and a lot of the posters either had Touhou avitars or outright discussed it in threads in there off topic forum. However I know little about it and do not care to. (most of it coming from the 3 minutes I spent on TVTropes to learn about it)

None the less it is a great video. But I've seen better Minecraft creations that have took a lot less time to make.

Anime or a game or something? Anywho. Incredible amounts of effort and time are put into these Minecraft creations.

I think that many of y'all and the Escapist in general take the term troll far, far too seriously. Some people use the term troll to merely mean things like "pranking" or "joking around", instead of "saying the most offensive possible thing for the sake of riling people up".

I wasn't trying to rile up anyone and that comment about gaming licenses was just a joke. Some of you here have created an incredibly pointless shitstorm and given me a warn level over this. I meant absolutely no offense and it should have been clear from my words. I think that if anyone needs to lighten up a little, it is many of y'all. And not take offense merely for the sake of taking offense.

I was honestly surprised at the lack of being known around here of such a big internet meme. Disagreeing is one thing, but being outraged and attempting to punish a user is another.

Sixcess:

Oh hey, speaking of TvTropes, TvTropes, like Terraria Online, is another one of those non-anime online communities that have a quite sizable number of Touhou fans.

Actually, in my experience, anime sites don't talk about Touhou that much.

The various Touhou threads in that section might actually have more posts than all other games put together. Also, I've never seen an anime site that has as many posts about Touhou as non-anime sites.

YES! Someone who gets it.

The number of Touhou videos and video views on youtube alone, is surely equal to or greater than Team Fortress 2 views.

Googled this Touhou thing... It looks and sounds like the most generic anime crap I've ever seen. Also, that map is TINY. The guys who did the World of Warcraft in minecraft did the entire warcraft world, ALL OF IT to scale.

Ahem, you got that warning because you overreacted. Don't blame us and our ignorance of touhou for that. Perhaps we don't need to lighten up as much as you should try wording your posts better and less aggressively.

Soviet Heavy:

That's the thing, I wasn't being aggressive at all.

LilithSlave:

Obviously people see differently than you do.

Someone has a lot of time on their hands, damn.

This is the closest the escapist gets to a fight.

I know of the Touhou (I first heard of the project in 2005), but they're not really very popular outside of Japan and 4chan.
Team Shanghai Alice don't even have an English website; making it very difficult for English natives to even acquire the games.

Video is interesting. Lot of effort, and quite a few of those places are really impressive looking. I think why a lot of people are disregarding the video is because its 45 minutes long. That's like 2 weeks by the Youtube Calendar. Should probably make another video with just the highlights. For example, that starting overhead flight and the shrine thingy was kind of underwhelming. The clock tower/mansion and that thing with all the portals hanging in the air were awesome.

As for how popular Touhou is.... I kind of view it like Monster Hunter. Huge following in Japan, not so much outside of it. I've seen a handful of memes related to Tohou, but really it only seems to be about equivalent to the total number of anime memes. You see them, just not that often (unless you're specifically googling for it or regularly visiting a touhou site)

I'm only aware of it because my youtube searches one day brought me to some music from Tohou. Enjoyed the music, looked for the game, realized I couldn't get it without sifting through a ton of torrents.

I actually have heard of Touhou, and still had no fucking clue what you were referring to when I entered this thread.

Nothing will impress me more than the guy who made Minecraft in Minecraft. No anime cities, no recreations of Tolkien's universe, etc. Until of course someone does something more impressive. I might add that the videos portraying those creations usually don't feature a camera that's strapped to one of those Vietnam era one-time miniature jet engines that fly at ridiculously high speeds and cannot be stopped once started until it runs out of fuel.

Also, I like how OP has the notion that anyone who doesn't share his love for his Japanese Bullet-Hell game is just playing a prank on him and pretending to deny the glorious light of Touhou that literally puts every other video game in existence to shame. Anyone who doesn't enjoy video games about anime girls spraying millions of projectiles across the screen with an overly complex backstory for such a thing must surely be a troll or entirely devoid of intellect.
