Historical gaming... to a point.

So what are you favorite games with a historical setting?

Please bear in mind, leave out hardcore simulators or grand strategy games. I'm talking about more accessible games in a variety of genres. That means no Total War, Hearts of Iron, etc.

Apparently I'm in a minority in liking the WW2 setting of the old CODs and MOHs.
Edit: Oops I misread the OP slightly. So yeah, M&B (if that counts).
Edit Edit: Assassin's Creed, especially the first one in the Crusades.

Well, pretty much any tot-

Oh.

Er.........

Well, I like the civilization games, which are based on you creating your own history.

When it's not a strategy gamme, though, I tend to go for science fiction or fantasy though.

I'll also agree with that.

I don't remember being taught about the war between Swadia and the Khergit Khanate at school but if you guys say that it's historically accurate then ok.

There are hardly any games set in the eras of history I really like, and the ones you could kind of say are are the aforementioned strategy games, which tend to be a little on the unhistorical and multi-cultural side.

More games need to be set in Dark Ages Britain and France or the Ancient Near East. Play as the Jews escaping Babylonian captivity or a realistic King Arthur story instead of that chivalrous French and English nonsense.

Uhhhh, Silent Hunter maybe? But that sorta falls under the 'no simulators' thing.

Iwata:

Unfortunately, that's most of (the good ones among) them, y'know... mainly because I came in here just to say Total War and leave... like a great many other people, I'm sure.

Anyway, Shadow of Rome was OK. You counting Assassin's Creed lot? 'Cos the research done for them was pretty decent (I mean, dredging up historic figures for allies/assassinations and political background).

I was thinking more under the action/adventure genres, so yes, the AC games do indeed count. And Shadow of Rome was a great game.

Does Wolfenstein count as historical? You know...it's set in that not often referred to part of history where the Nazis start fooling around with zombies and cybernetics. >.>

*Raises hand to bring up BFF's Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron.*

Well, I never had a problem with all the WW2-shooters back when they still... Y'know, existed. I rather liked the formula, and I've got many good memories from Call of Duty 2. Hell, plonk me back down in Battlefield 1942 and I'd probably get right back in the groove. The problem, as I saw (and see) it was that they were all too generic, all with the same controls and mechanics.

There were always an Omaha-level, a few Soviet levels, maybe a few in Africa, but the majority of the WW2-games just felt like a long stretch of French villages and cackling nazis. It just got too formulaic at the end of it all. They could have livened it up a bit more. Hell, EA was on to something good with Battlefield Heroes, but they let that opportunity slip by completly.

Now, we've got loads of identical present day shooters, instead! Progress! :P

I liked Assassin's Creed 1's setting the most. Though I love how in all the games how the major events that happen, actually happened in real life. Yeah there's some artistic liberties with some events so the story would work, but I felt they did a pretty good job of it.

Assassin's Creed 2. I love Renaissance Italy as a setting, because it's such a great juxtaposition of the best that mankind has to offer (with all the advances happening in technology and the arts), along with the worst (all the corruption, murder, incest etc. going on behind the scenes). It's one of those time periods where often the truth of what was really happening could be stranger and more exciting than anyone's fiction. To top it all of, AC2 just made it all look so gosh darn pretty, and the free-running and climbing meant that there wasn't an inch of all this prettiness that you couldn't get up close and personal with. (I say AC2 rather than Brotherhood because, although Brotherhood's graphics were marginally better, I preferred the variety of different aesthetics offered by AC2's different locations, whereas in Brotherhood Rome is just Rome).

2 words are all I need to answer: Sengoku Basara.
The historical accuracy is truly stunning.

The only one i could think of is Mario's time machine . If no one remembers that game you are too young . Or too lucky .

Edit: also isn't nobunaga's ambition suppose to be historically accurate?

I'm just waiting for the futuristic first person shooter age.. What innovations will they bring? JET PACKS FOR ALL.

And historic? Hmm.. Age of Empires 3

Well only the Total War and Assassins Creed series are the only histroical games I like. Most games based on reality are just boring to me.

AssCreed it is. Especially the Ezio games - they looked just so much nicer.

More Fun To Compute:
I don't remember being taught about the war between Swadia and the Khergit Khanate at school but if you guys say that it's historically accurate then ok.

Well I played Mount and Blade with a mod that turned it into a historically accurate dark age Britain so that may count :p

I'd also add Bladestorm: The hundred years war.
Also Assasins creed.
War of the roses comes out next year and is looking pretty cool.
I also greatly enjoyed Company of heroes.

So it's historical gaming but leave out the best ones?

Oh well am I still allowed Company of heroes?

The third instalment is set during the Cossack uprising against the polish( & maybe Lithuanian s, I forget). you can also play as Swedes, Russians and Tatars.

The WWII CODs were fun, Assassin's creed had nice settings and good historical points in time (until AC:III comes out), and Mount and Blade is pretty nice.

Dynasty Warriors (The Three Kingdoms era of China), Samurai Warriors and Sengoku Basara 3 (Sengoku period of Japan).

Destroy All Humans! (1950's Cold war - America) and DAH!2(1960's Cold War - International) are two more of my favourites.

Warcraft III, I mean could there be a more educational game about the stone age? It's a shame that only the humans survived the iron age thou, would be nice if there came a Warcraft IV so we could actually get to see the reasons that the Elves, Orcs and Undead actually vanished from this planet.

I love Assassin's Creed 1's setting.

Age Of Empires and Civilization is all I can think of really.

AssCreed Brohood had the best environments I've seen in my games, and the atmosphere is fantastic.

assassins creed 2.

Cod 2 is the benchmark for wwII campaigns.

The sabateur i think also pulls off the wwII setting quite well. Especially how the nazi's first start appearing quite rarely, And people say they are "just some politcal group." then they are suddenly EVERYWHERE.
