The fuck is this shit? Apparently, unless your a god damn fucking psychic, you have literally 0 chance of beating this boss first time around.
Im on 2 bars of vigor because I leveled up some completely fucking worthless ability instead of the one that gives me +1 vigor, and I didn't get a chance to drink the potion - because I didn't realized I was going to be tossed into the fight like I would. Oh yeh, and the game autosaved over the only worthy save file I had...
But none of that is a problem. Here I am, conqueror of Dark Souls and Demons Souls, of course I would get around to perfecting it to the point of being able to cut off the tails without breaking a sweat... but then came the QTE's...
Whose fucking genius idea was it to make the QTE popups so fucking small and in such random places? WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE QTE's IN THIS FIGHT AT ALL? Made it past the tentacles to die to QTE's twice and get shocked to death another time.
I have maintained that the Souls games are hard, but fair, always fair. This fight is not fair. Bad design choice and a marring shitstain on an otherwise exquisite game.
Well it is fair. You were going down to the Kayrans lair so you should at least drink a potion beforehand - that's what I did. I was also on 2 bars of vigor.
You can also turn the quick-time events off, and anyway after the first try you'll know where you need to look to see them.
After cutting the tentacles off the fight is honestly very easy, you must just be bad at the game.
Wait until one of the later boss fights. No QTE's, but so unfair.
Anyway, you are kidding yourself if you consider the Souls games to be more fair than The Witcher 2. What the hell are you playing dude? What's your definition of "fair"?
If you don't like them turn off difficult QTE's in the options. 2 bars of vigour is enough it just makes the fight slightly slower and you didn't realise you were about to be tossed into a fight? This isn't a fight that came out of nowhere. What did you think would happen when you entered the Kayrans lair while on the Kayran quest after Sile tells you she is going to draw it on to land?
As Daystar said, you can also lay down the Kayran trap(s) instead of using the Yrden sign. Sure, the Kayran is a really nasty fight the first time around (took me like 20-30 tries), but much of it is attributed to the fact that most players won't be fully accustomed to the game by that point. On my second playthrough I took the Kayran down on the first attempt on nightmare difficulty, simply because I was more accustomed to the flow of combat in the Witcher.

Its funny I found the same thing happening.
Combat was a dice roll for me for a large part of the game, an then all of a sudden it just clicked and I was hacking my way through enemies like it was nobodies business.
It's not that hard. Just lay trap, dodge, rinse and repeat.
It took me 5 tries for the pre EE version. Thats coz it bloody flicks rocks at you every half second....
They tweaked the timing for the EE i understand.
OP, trick is to Quen up when you can. Relatively easy to dodge the tentacles, so quen when you get to the walking the bridge part. And theres only like 1 QTE in that scene.

I don't recall any particularly unfair boss fights.

Well, most of the early portions of Chapter 1 are spent preparing and readying yourself for fighting the Kayran and everyone makes it a big deal. Hell to activate it, you have to speak to Sile herself beforehand and tell her you're ready and all set. So how you weren't ready for it, I don't know.
Although it is a little trial and error'y. I had to re-do the fight 3 or 4 times before I got past it, and that number is certainly not unreasonable.

What super potions? There are no potions in the game that will let you shrug off 50% or 100% damage hits, unless you're playing on easy.
C'mon man. The first time you go down there to get the mucus you have to jump off of a gazillion rocks, if that's not a hint. Having said that, I think I messed up on my first playthrough as well, and had to reload a bit. Stuff like that happens though. As for the QTE's; they surprised me too, but once you get the hang of it, it's really nothing too unfair. It is a huge cancerous kraken after all.
Wait till your next boss fight. That one's gonna make you shit bricks out of frustration. From the next chapter on things get relatively easy though.

If my memory serves, you can stack potions. There are skills (and mutagens?) that dramatically increase the effects. Also, at least one of the potions give you regeneration. Lastly, there's some kind of skill that gives you bonuses when you're drugged up to capacity.
It's been well over a year and I only played the game once, so I forget the particulars. However, I do remember that by the third act I was strolling through fights with minimum hassles, mostly due to potion effects. That was on whatever difficulty is one above normal. I have no idea how it would work on the harder settings.
I'm sorry, but if you think that the kayran is hard, then the next boss is going to climb out of the your screen and beat you to death with your own keyboard. All you have to do is to stand infront of the tentacles, do they Yrden and then dodge. And the QTE is right-click then spacebar if I'm not mistaken.
The only part I thought was tricky was when you had to run up on it and I couldnt see which bloody ramp I could run on and which was just a invisible wall, but that just cost me one retry.
Man up and remember to loot the kayran afterwards, I forgot to do that my first time.

Mmmmh. Maybe you broke the game accidentally by using a specific combination of potions, mutagens and perks.
Regardless, by the end everyone is strolling through due to those finishing moves. Kill 3 people, hit X, you win! Doesn't work in boss fights though... The

God I loved spec'ing in magic... once you've maxed out your Aard sign and you get to the siege of Vergen? Plicking soldiers off the walls 1 by 1 like ants never gets old XD
The Kayran is easy enough once you know what you're doing, but it's an ugly fight to go into blind. It bears absolutely no resemblance to any of the fights you've had and learned on up to that point in time, being its own thing entirely. I loved the Witcher 2, but that's some pretty sloppy game design. No one wants to learn an entirely new game play mechanic in a situation where you're getting killed in one shot.

Not really. Dodge, roll, use the Kayran trap if you have it, drink the potion before the fight if you have it, use Yrden, hit with sword.
It's not the same as the other fights but it requires no unusual tactics. No one should struggle with the concept of applying what they've learnt so far to the Kayran fight.
Woodsey: Did you play the EE or the first PC edition? Because the end of Act 1 has something to say about that. I'm still sore.
I played the EE. My understanding is that it was harder on the normal version, or that the cut scene was unskippable, or...something. There was something about the pre-EE version that made it especially tedious.

Ah...that was almost tediously easy in the EE, even on the harder difficulties. It was so easy that the forced failure at the end of the first encounter was particularly galling.

IIRC, just spam the shield sign and you're pretty much invincible!
I found Letho himself to be rather easy. It was the five hundred guards that stormed the building after I killed Loreto that gave me shit.
I think he means the first Letho fight. It was pretty damn hard if you hadn't upgraded the shield (Qwen?) sign.
I didn't have much of a problem with Letho during the fight. Later, when I sided with Roche and we attacked the guard house to stop Loreto was where I had the most trouble in Act 1.

Really? I thought the guard house was pretty easy. Weird, everyone seems to have completely different experiences with this game.
Letho's fight became manageable for me after I resorted to kiting around and occasionally taking a stab at him, but for a long time I wanted to take him aggressively, and it never worked. Still, the guy kills you in like three hits :|
