Its that time again, Your Top 10 Favorite Games Topic

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 NEXT

Bearing in mind I am mainly a pc gamer.
1) Command And Conquer: Tiberian Sun
2) Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth
3) Rise of Nations
4) Borderlands 2
5) DOTA 2
6) Portal 2
7) Silent Hill (Original PS1)
8) Far Cry 1 ( When it was actually good, very high hopes for FC3)
9) Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
10) Rollercoaster Tycoon 2

And yes, I do like RTS games ;)

EDIT: Holy crap. Just realised I didn't put KOTOR on here.... DOH
KOTOR would definitely be my number 1.

Hm. I'll put these in spoilers, as I'm going to do mini-explanations for my rationalization of each.

So what's my number 1, you might be asking? I've already picked Okami, what else could possibly fill the void? Well, ask and you shall receive.

Fractral:

You'd put black 2 above the first? I didn't think it was as good. Actually, you're the first person I've seen do that.

I liked Black. Definitely one of my favourite Pokemon games, but for some reason I just found Black 2 more fun. Might of been everything extra that they added into it, like the PWT. I love the idea of the old champions, gym leaders etc being brought back.

In no real order,

-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
-The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
-Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions (because if I take it off the list the 150 or so DAYS I spent playing it are officially wasted)
-Fallout: New Vegas
-Tetris
-Minecraft
-League of Legends and Dota 2 (I love you both equally, even though you don't get along)
-Borderlands 1 (Borderlands 2 will likely replace this one, once I've finished it)
-Pokemon Emerald
-Kirby and the Amazing Mirror

ohnoitsabear:

IVAN (an excellent free rougelike)

Thank you so much for mentioning this. I went and downloaded it immediately after reading, and it's such an awesome middle ground between ASCII and something like Binding of Issac. The more roguelikes, the better.

What I love about IVAN is that it's virtually impossible to beat. This means that I'm rarely angry when I die, because I know it's going to happen anyway. It's a shame they've stopped updating it, though.

Also, a tip. If you happen to find the Holy Banana of Oily Orpiv, eat it. It will increase all of your stats, and it has a tendency to explode if you hang onto it for too long.

Largely in no order, after the first two it's all kind of debatable.

Majora's Mask (this is the only Zelda title I'll put up, as including the rest would make my top ten quite homogeneous)

Dark Souls

Halo 3

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door

Assassin's Creed II

Skyrim

Super Mario Galaxy

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Dark Cloud

Disgaea

Tough call... I guess I'll go with the ones that currently come to mind as my "Top 10 Favorites" but these things change, frequently... though at least 50% of these are likely to always show up on the list.

5. Bioshock
6. Star Wars: Battlefront 2

Team Fortress 2
Borderlands 2
Portal 2
Modern Warfare 3
Saints Row The Third
Dota 2
Minecraft
Worms Reloaded
Batman Arkham City
Skyrim

Age of Empires - I love the feel of the game, and it inspired my gaming passion.
Homeworld - it represents the nadir of story-focused strategy to date.
Skyrim - the closest games have come to date to one of my "perfect" ideals: the open world life sim.
Minecraft - is something special.
Nethack - mechanically effervescent. (Now there's a compliment for the ages!)
Risen - Evoked a sense of loneliness and total immersion.
Riven - This game was just beautiful.
King of Dragon Pass - Has a sense of place few designs can even approach.
Portal - 'Nuff said.
Immortal Cities: Children of the Nile - to date the ultimate expression of the City Builder form.

Captcha (after three Dish-sponsored spam ads): Three strikes. If only.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Star Wars BattleFront II
Pokémon Gold/Silver
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Resident Evil 4
Call Of Duty: Zombies
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

Yeah, I'm finding it harder and harder to order them all, so I'll just name them in no order. And I'll put multiple games from the same series together, otherwise my list'll just be full of sequels.

Final Fantasy V, VI, VIII & IX
Silent Hill 2 & 4
Lost Odyssey
Chrono Trigger
Morrowind & Skyrim
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
BioShock
Soulcalibur II & IV
Saints Row 2

7) Advanced Wars
6) Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
5) Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver

6. Call of Duty: Black Ops
7. The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
9. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
10. Darksiders 2

Someone else on this planet that thinks Warrior Within is superior to the original in all ways that count? There is hope.

I'm told the combat in the orginal is terrible, so I never bothered to play it.

No particular order, just ones I remember enjoying the most. Decided to not include games from my childhood to avoid clusterfuck.

GTA IV -- Suck it, haters. The most fun I've had in multiplayer. With script mods.
Shin Megami Tensei: PERSONA 4 -- Very strong story and characters with nice dungeon crawling.
The Elder Scrolls IV: OBLIVION -- I was in awe the first time I played, and a long time after.
DIABLO II -- Addiction.
MAX PAYNE 2: The Fall of Max Payne -- Stylistically awesome; Remedy was still on board.
Mass Effect -- Refining storytelling in video games little by little.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory -- The high point of the series in my opinion. Such exciting fun.
Silent Hill 2 -- The sheer meaningfulness of every single little thing. One of a kind.
Dragon Age: Origins -- Didn't hold your hand all the time; story and characters are very solid.
Tie between NFS: Most Wanted & FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage for casual racing escapism.

1) Syphon Filter 2
2) Baldur's Gate 2
3) Age of Empires 2
4) Dynasty Warriors 2/3
5) Mass Effect 2
6) Batman: Arkham Asylum
7) X-Men Legends
8) Medievil
9) Dark Souls
10) Call of Duty 4

Wow, my first 5 are all sequels.

Favorite games in an order:

Halo (series)
Silent Hill (All of 'em... Deal with it.)
Heavy Rain (BOOBS!)
Spec Ops: The Line (Story FTW)
XCOM Enemy Unknown (Love it, just wish I sucked less)
L.A. Noire (DEAD BOOBS!)
Reside3nt Evil 6 (Once again: Deal with it.)
CoD M-Wubz, Blops and Waw
Condemned (Because fuck homeless people!
Hotline Miami

In no particular order:

Halo: Combat Evolved
Psychonauts
Team Fortress 2
Mafia 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Far Cry
Timesplitters: Future Perfect
Contra
The Legend of Zelda
Star Wars Battlefront

It has occurred to me I have never thought about this before, hmm... guess I'll put 5 I know I would include in such a list, and maybe add an actual top 10 later if I can decide.
In no particular order:
Star Wars Knights of the old republic: A great RPG, nice story, characters, and I love the fact that fights between two swordsmen/Jedi/sith actually looks like a sword/light-saber fight. It has always baffled me that no other RPG with this type of combat(that I can think of) does this.
Arcanum: Of Steam-works and Magic Obscura: Great game, Great RPG. Simple.
Mount and Blade: Warband: This game is amazing, if you haven't played it, do so now, or I will find you, and I will kill you.
Hmm... I need more time to think about this, this is tough.

In no particular order. However, my favorite games usually fall into 1 of 2 categories or both: critical thinking, or exploration.

Exploration:
"Vanilla" WoW and Burning Crusade. (Counting as one, since it's technically the same game)
Legend of Mana

Critical Thinking:
Touhou 6 & 7
Starcraft, Brood War
Armored Core Silent Line
Armored Core III
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Both or Neither:
Riven
Realmz (Shareware)

GSP66:

Mass Effect 2 (loved every charecter, except Jacob)

Ultima VII

Honorable Mentions go to: DE:HR, Dragon Age: Origins, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid 3, Bioshock, FFIV, KoToR, System Shock, Splinter Cell Double Agent, Hitman: Blood Money, XCOM, Jade Empire, Spec Ops The Line, the Wing Commander series (sans Privateer 2), Syndicate (the real Syndicate not it's mutated FPS offspring) and Ultima's IV V VII pt2 and the Stygian Abyss.

4: Roadwar 2000
5: Wing Commander Privateer
6: UFO: Enemy Unknown (distinguishing it from the recent release)

8: Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games
9: Blood
10: Saints Row 2

Riven - This game was just beautiful.

Slenn:
Riven

This was unexpected, but it makes me very happy.

@Emperor. It's the best out of the whole Myst series (I still have to play Uru), but in terms of the core 5 single player games, Riven was indeed the best. It had a solid storyline that didn't feel like fan fiction. The pre-rendered graphics were wonderful, captivating, and best of all, REAL. Even when I play it again today, it astounds me at how much effort Cyan put into the game. The sounds and visuals really made the world like it was on the verge of collapse. And the end of the game really showed a great example of the idea of cataclysm.

Agreed. I love all the details of the world like the bacteria that make water move away from heat, I love Gehn as a villain, I love the way all the puzzles make sense in the world unlike in most adventure games, I love how immersive it is (maglev rides, whee!), and I hate-love the ending for making me cry.

(Uru was fun though. Not spectacular, but fun. You can download and play it for free, and I recommend it for the puzzles and exploration. The graphics and controls are weak and the multiplayer really feels shoehorned in, though.)

I always have a terrible time with this. Even though nobody reads it, I always get antsy about putting a definite list in writing.

Pokemon Gold
Shantae
LoZ: Link's Awakening
No More Heroes
Team Fortress 2
Cave Story
Mega Man 2
Saints Row 2
Kirby and The Chrystal Shards
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

I'd like to talk about some of them, the first being Paper Mario, which is a game that I enjoy a lot, but fate always conspires against me to beat. Such as a sudden power outage, a fried laser reader or an inexplicably corrupt data file. I'm sure I'll try again some day, and maybe some day I'll finally beat it.

Saints Row two is on there not because it's a game that I would really play and enjoy again, but because I chose the games based on a felling of fulfillment after playing them. I would probably rather play SR Three over Two, it Three didn't leave me with the sense of success and longing that Two did.

Similarly, Pokemon Gold is on there because it was the first game I ever owned, and I count it the single most important influence on my life. I wouldn't be who I am today without that game.

That the last one is Shantae, for Game Boy Color. It's banaynays out the whizow and everyone should play it.

Bah, bah I say to simply limiting it to ten games! How about every game that I have enjoyed enough to remember over y gaming career!

49) .. and I am out. I am sure there are many I have missed, and many not worth mentioning, but that is what I would call the core of gaming. Oh!
50) Paper Mario (Gamecube)

okay, done!

My only edit, because the game deserves it..

51) Spec Ops: The Line

Ah, the ole' "Top X games" thread. The thread wherein a hundred or more posters will list their favorite games...and never take the time to read anyone else's list. Good times. Good times.

Anyway, on to my pointless contribution...

Half-Life (series)
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Homeworld
Metroid Prime
MechWarrior 2 (and series, really)
Banjo-Kazooie
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Torchlight 2
Donkey Kong County

For the record, there are at least thirty other games I could have listed here; just off the top of my head.

I've been gaming since the 80's. Needless to say, I've seen a LOT of amazing games come and go. So a Top 10 list is rather difficult for me.

I read it, Vigor.

Cannot believe I forgot the Donkey Kong Country series. Second was my favorite, just that little bit of graphical polish, and hunting for DK coins kept me busy for hours! Actually beat the real ending once. Very entertaining game.

Fallout not even in Honorable mentions

Might I ask why?

It's disqualified as I really cannot view it objectively, I grew up with Fallout to me it's more than a game.
