Create a hostile faction in a modern fps

Okay so the modern Call of Battlefield games generally have you situated in the middle east killing arabs or somewhere else running around shooting brown skinned people or russians. And it's kind of bugging me (and a lot of people on the escapist). Thing is I can't really make up who you should shoot in these games it's not like anyone would accept that Denmark started to conquer the world and you have to stop them.

So my question to you is:
Can you make up some enemy in a modern fps that isn't brown skinned, russian or something else that would count as a minority in the western world.

what about a revolutionary clique of neo nazis starting a civil war in a non-german country, that would be interesting if nothing else.

Aliens.
Demons.
Mutants.
Americans.
Undead.
Robots.
Drop Bears.

It can still be kept as a modern FPS, it just happens to be a modern day when there's a sudden Alien/Demon/Mutant etc. attack.

a secret organisation who has ties with every military and political group on the planet

or

two rival groups trying to take control of mars

America is the main villain and your in a coalition of countries against their imperialism.

A surpris invasion of greece by the french and germans to regain control after a violent uprising has installed a brutal dictatorship

or how about an american civil war? (not the actual one but a hypothetical near future one)

those are just 3 ideas where we keep using normal humans with modern technology

Spiders.

A game where the object is just to massacre hordes of Spider.

Because ... fuck Spiders.

Goons with guns, we believe them to be the evilest there ever was... well you did say MMS, that is as complex as the genre allows, otherwise we are talking completely different games.

A religious cult of assassins. Think Iscariot and hellsing from Hellsing but more not on our side.

I'd play a game about an animal uprising(cartoon-y or not) with guns

A Private Military Company, like Blackwater. The player is a regular soldier escorting an official who uncovers evidence of the murder of civilians and other criminal acts by the PMC. The PMC kills the official and now you have to get out of the city they control and back to your commanding officer to blow the whistle on them.

A game where you fight nature, think like left 4 dead crossed with big game hunt except instead of zombies all the woodland critters want you dead. Rabbits, beavers, mice, birds, frogs, bears, coyotes, spiders, bees, etc. You start out in your neighborhood when animals start attacking as you progress through levels you go to a farm then a forest then a mountain

Cannibal rednecks obviously. Or Americans, a game where they are the enemy that actually has good gameplay.

A group of campers who sit in one room and do "The Worm Squirm".
The world is at stake because they're doing this in the only room that has good coffee at your local office block.

A coalition of Israeli and Iranian forces who assault the US east coast. Nobody would see that one coming.

I would have suggested something like this.

The city of Detroit, crime has been spiraling out of control. Now it's total anarchy but military action is off the table due to the casualties it would cause. You are a lone CIA operative sent into the city to try to reestablish law and order by recruiting officers, gathering intel and neutralizing local gang leaders who seized control of their own small domains. It reaches a climax at city hall as you battle your way through the largest of the gangs, take out their leader, and establish the dominance of the government over the chaotic city.

You play as a member of a small group of freedom fighters in a country torn apart by a despotic government on one side, and an invading liberating army on the other. You were never particularly happy living under this tyrannical rule, but when another nation's military gets involved and starts making your life even more of a desperate struggle for survival, you take up arms in an effort to simply ensure that you can find somewhere to live in peace.

The United Nations.

Because fuck those guys.

Also the Illuminati! You have to fight against more advanced forces that are a coalition from various nations trying to take over the world.

If you mean 'hostile faction' as in 'who should the United States fight next' then you're looking at it in the wrong way. The problem isn't a lack of enemies to choose from, the problem is you've exhausted all the likely enemies for the protagonists you keep using over and over again.

The Private Military Company is a good idea- and one I've always been interested in is a small scale border war that fought for complete BS reasons. I say that because game invasions are always so tyranical/noble and usually so clear cut, when even in real life the reasons can become petty and complicated.

I'd like to see a Battlefield like game involving a full on war between Australia and New Zealand- started simply because it's inept leaders couldn't agree on some tiny little thing. All the soldiers on both sides know full well and often joke about what a crock of crap the whole exercise is, but they still go at it like troopers, trying to destroy targets you wouldn't expect in a shooter to demoralise the enemy- such as beer breweries, ski resorts, natural landmarks and sport stadiums etc. Expect lots of localised humour, in much the same way as British humour goes into it's movies (for some reason Chicken Run comes to mind).

Another bonus is that both countries use the same just-outdated US tech, so the equipment will be totally balanced, with victors coming down to skill and tactics alone.

Outside that, why not the 5-day war between Russia and Georgia? After all, it did make for a fantastic movie... along with a truly terrible one.

Why is it so bad for folks who happen to be brown skinned to be the enemies in games? If you are trying to base your game in a modern military setting, and you need a lot of enemies to fill up your levels, there are really not too many places to look. Africa, Asia, South America, and the Middle East are sort of the only places that a modern military could realistically be conceived to need to fight. Maybe Mexico, but you'd still just be fighting brown skinned people, which is bad for some reason, right? There just aren't any European terrorist states.

I mean, you can make it right wing nutjobs or a PMC or something, but the scope of the story would have to be pretty small.

All of this is assuming, of course, that the protagonist would be from the United States or some other western nation.

A group of computer viruses with a collective consciousness/hive mind intent on destroying/ controlling all military weapon data things.

Batman or James bond villains, some big colorful evil genius with a hyper death ray on an island defended by Elvis Priestly clones, or something, threatening the world with hyper death! (which is 20% worse then regular death)

All of these ideas would feature campaigns that flip-flop between both sides.

Sewer people vs the NYPD

French people vs Canadians and depict both sides as full of bloodthirsty awesomely skilled soldiers.

Play as a zombie on the zombie planet during the human apocalypse.

Craaaaaaaaaaaaaab people. Craaaaaaaaaaaaaab people. Craaaaaaaaaaaaaab people. Craaaaaaaaaaaaaab people.

It'd be like Gears of War with them popping out of the ground, only instead of Locust it's the

Craaaaaaaaaaaaaab people.

Australians, we're good sports, we can take it.

The setting - We got sick of everything costing so much and decided to take over the world.

Why not a game where some crazed dictator ends up leading Great Britain, and decides he wants to restore the country to it's former glory by rebuilding the empire, starting with Europe. A western nation fighting other western nations could work. It doesn't have to be realistic, you could even set it in an alternate timeline. It can still be modern day, just with different politics in play.

Tea party guys, think about it, they are all armed to the teeth, roundly despise the UN/EU, and are lead by crazy people!

They are almost as good as the amish as an antagonist force because they will never know they are having the piss taken out of them, because videogames are what cause all of the shootings and gun violence in the states (obviously, well done), so why would they play them?

Of course, since that will never happen, lets just say the French, because... France

I think this is where I get hung up. The western world as a whole doesn't consider Russians as a minority, considering they make up a population close to 150 million or so. The United States considers them a minority because, well, they aren't American. So this is my crossroads: is the question tailored to the western world as a whole who have a good grasp of how the world is outside of their own countries or just the United States who anybody is a minority if they aren't pure, white bred American?

In both cases I would say China. I think the U.S. knows enough about China to realize there are over a billion of them and the western powers are certainly not happy with their economic boom. China is easily on the verge of becoming the next super power if they're not already considered this and the fact they're communist is just icing on the butter cookie of ideologies for America to disagree with in the next Shooter Guy game. Yup, I would say China.

Canadians.

The maple syrup reserves have run dry, hockey has been cancelled for good, and Celine Dion is making a comeback.

Shit just got serious.

An attack from the north lead by mounties. They are armed to the teeth with hockey sticks, woodsman axes, explosive curling rocks and milk bags.

No one is safe.

Using WW2 era bi-planes, canoes mounted with cannons, and submarines constructed from seal blubber, their units are undetectable by the sophisticated technology of today's radar systems (clever bastards).

Truly an evil the world is not ready for.

a bunch or Romans are trying to rebuild the roman empire and declare a new Caesar, hinder their plans by slaughtering thousand of upon thousand of romans.

you will even get to shove a spear up their Mussolini wannabe leader's ass.

Ah, well, in that case. Time Travelers from an alternate, steampunk universe. They would have fabulous mustaches, weird technology, and monocles. That would be rad.

The problem I've had with most modern military shooters is that there are never any high stakes to be had. Each and every one I've played has revolved around fighting foes where victory is assured.

Terrorists? We outnumber them and have vastly superior tech.
Russians? We have vastly superior weapons and airpower.
Arabs? See Russians.

The only really viable threats would be the European Union (possibly fighting in a civil war within the EU), Americans (again, civil war), or China. Two of these will never happen; you would never sell a game to the West (who are the world's largest consumers of these games) when your foe is American or Western European

Ninja Nazi Mutants From Space riding on Robotic Zombie Dinosaurs. Their weapons of choice would be electric guitars, vuvuzelas, shoes and sticks. Their leader is a greased-up Justin Bieber clone wearing nothing but a speedo and going around teabagging everything.

Because fuck faux realism. This would be way more awesome to shoot at than random human soldier #249481/B.

Set in 2018.

The people of Greece are revolting against their government, simply put, sick of the increasing poverty, and motivated by the leader of the revolt nicknamed: "Alcaues" (Name in reference to: Ancient greek poet who wrote Epigrams, pissed off a roman general/kingwhatever) who has managed to convince the people of Greece that they key to their happiness is to take control of their life and overthrow the government that is full of corruption and the heads of it have simply been feeding off the people for generations. Also the government has been doing terrible things to the people for a while now.

Poneros the current president of Greece, is the main antagonist obviously. He has tried to keep control before the revolt by taking absolute control of the media, threatening and bribing the parliament and various other check's and balances of the government to keep control of them, and to keep the public from realizing it, seeing as simply dissolving these would bring out the obvious. Alcaues and his obviously labelled 'terrorist faction" by the government, which is called "Epanastatikos Agonas" (lol, EA when shortened) which I think means "Revolutionary Struggle" in Greek.

No incoming or outgoing information legally, and any who question or call him on his BS are executed. Currently the people communicate via HAM radios(?), as you cannot control those like you can, say, television, etc. This is how Alcaues spreads his messages.

Anyone even suspected of being affiliated or with knowledge of the organization is 'detained' until further notice, but Alcaues and his group uncover mass graves and manage to identify a lot of the people, and hack the government controlled media to broadcast this, which with encouragement from Alcaues soon after such is broadcasted, manages to spark nationwide riots and protests. Poneros calls in the military to try and stop the riots, and several kills occur.

The game goes back and forth between an agent of Poneros who's mission is to kill Alcaues and Alcaues's brother who's mission is to.. well kill Poneros. Both have their own friends, family, etc, and their own perspective, and how it changes over time during the revolutionary war.

That's all I got for now.

I would love to see a game where Europe is being invaded by America and we have to fight back.

ccdohl:

It is not so much the brown skin as it is the fact that in pretty much all modern shooters we play as the American hero saving the world by going to these arab/russian/african countries. What I find especially grating sometimes is how this is portrayed. CoD MW3 has a good example. I am being attacked by 50 arabs. My team of 3 kills all of them because they blindly run into open fire, my American heros do the same but bullets merely make them trip while the enemies drop like flies. I get hit by 10 bullets, crouch down for a couple of seconds and voila all healthy again. Now I understand those type of things are game mechanics but it is getting tiring seeing always the same American soldiers cracking wisecracks inbetween firefights where they easily killed a 100 oppenents, took 50 bullets in their knees and are on top of the world.

And this obviously always wins

And no this is not meant to be anti-American in any way
