Shenmue
Skyroads
Resident Evil 2
Rocket Knight Adventures
Quake
Metal gear solid
Fallout 3
Street Fighter 3rd strike
Driver: SF

Highest rank's from the top. It's also pretty interchangeable.

Okay, I will surely miss some big ones, but here goes (first 5 are in order, the rest are not):

1. ICO
2. Shadow of the Colossus
3. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
4. Super Mario 64
5. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

18. Beyond Good and Evil
19. The Walking Dead
20. Uncharted 2

Since you're doing a bump for this I suppose I'll toss mine in here. But only because my opinion counts this time...

1. Shadow of the Colossus
2. Journey
3. Fable/Fable: The Lost Chapters
4. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
5. Jak 3
6. Fable II
7. Sly 2
8. Onimusha 2
9. Halo 3
10. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
11. Pokemon White
12. Sly 3
13. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
14. Advent Rising
15. Ratchet & Clank 3
16. Dishonored
17. Hitman 2
18. Fable III
19. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
20. Darksiders 2

Like everyone else, the games are far too near and dear to me to actually put them in any set order. However, number 1 IS number 1. I'll also put honourable mentions at the end, so PLEASE look at them too. Also, I'm including expansions.

I consider franchises/series to be one game. I'll mark my most favourite out of the series in (), but just note that's part of how I measure the games.

1. Mass Effect (1)

2. Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic (II: The Sith Lords)

3. Shadow Of The Colossus

4. Medieval II: Total War

5. Half-Life 2 (with the Episodes. Note that I count Portal & Portal 2 as part of the Half-Life franchise, so I did not put it anywhere else, although it didn't factor into this selection. I have Half-Life, but it won't run on my computer.)

6. Sly/Sly Cooper (2: Band Of Thieves - haven't played Sly Cooper And The Thievius Raccoonus recently enough to put it on top.)

7. Ratchet & Clank (1)

8. Jak/Jak And Daxter (Jak And Daxter: The Precursor Legacy)

9. Counter Strike: Source

10. Final Fantasy (XII, then X with X-2)

11. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

12. Fallout 3 (only played 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, soo...)

13. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
(haven't played Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redguard, Morrowind, and only a bit of Skyrim, which looks awesome.)

14. Neverwinter Nights 1

15. Dead Space (1) (Haven't played 3, Ignition, or Mobile, although I doubt the latter two would be serious)

16. BioShock (1)

17. Fable (Fable/Fable: The Lost Chapters)

18. StarCraft (1)

19. Monster Hunter (Freedom Unite)

20. Civilization (Sid Meier's Civilization III) (II: The Test Of Time is horrible, and I only played a little of 4)

MOST ADDICTIVE GAME: World Of WarCraft (although it rivals Counter Strike: Source for that, and in and of itself is an awesome game, addictiveness aside.)

BEST COUCH MULTIPLAYER: Super Smash Brothers Melee (THE BEST)

VERY Honourable Mentions (Please take some of these into account!):

Spyro (series)
Crash Bandicoot (series)
Animal Crossing (series) (casual games)
Rogue Galaxy (sooo good)
Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time
Sins Of A Solar Empire (if it had singleplayer, it'd be one of the 20)
Age Of Empires (II) (haven't played III. It would be on the list if I had room)
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II (no expansions)
Chrono Trigger (haven't played enough to decide)
CastleVania (series)

I probably missed a BUNCH of games. I've never really liked the Mario games for those curious. These next games are by reputation: Zelda seems great (hype aside), Earthbound has an incredible reputation, as does Pokemon. I intend to play the Secret Of Mana games soon, as they have amazing reputation.

EDIT: God damned, I forgot Golden Sun: The Lost Age! Definitely an honourable mention, at LEAST.

In no special order.

Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IV
Dynasty Warriors 7
Warriors Orochi 3
Kessen 3
Timesplitters 3
Skyrim
Metal Gear Solid
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 11
Onimusha 3
Legend of Dragoon
Hogs of War
Dissidia Duodecim 012 Final Fantasy
Fire Emblem (The first western GBA one)
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
Metal Gear Solid 4
Disgaea 3
Warhammer 40k Space Marine

Though honestly, I could easily fill the list with Final Fantasy and Three Kingdoms related games if I wanted.
I know I have likely missed an assload of games I love, but off the top of my head this will do.

Here's my list, some of it might come as a surprise, some of it absolutely won't. I haven't spent long and hard thinking about this, but I love all of these games with almost shameful passion.

TIER 1: TOP DOG TIER FOR THE TOPPEST OF DOGS
1. No More Heroes (Wii/PS3)
2. Resident Evil 4 (Wii)
3. Bastion (PC)
4. Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS1)
5. Tetris (Pff...)

TIER 2: BADASS TIER FOR THE BADDEST OF ASSES
6. The Walking Dead (PC)
7. Dear Esther (PC)
8. The Void (PC)
9. PAYDAY: The Heist (PC/PS3)
10. Fallout 3 (PC/PS3)

TIER 3: COOL KID TIER FOR THE COOLEST OF KIDS
11. Portal 2 (PC/PS3)
12. Driver: San Francisco (PC)
13. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)

TIER 4: A TIER
16. Far Cry 2 (PC/PS3)
17. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)
18. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC)
19. The Binding of Isaac (PC)
20. Just Cause 2 (PC/PS3)

I know there are a couple of PS1-2 era games that I've got lying in my cupboard that I would definitely throw onto this list if I saw them, but I can't remember what they are for the life of me. The reason that I owned a lot of these games on two systems is that when I finally got a gaming PC, I ended up repurchasing most of my favourite games on Steam.

No particular order (except for number 1)

1. Persona 4
Legend of Zelda: MM
Persona 4 Arena
Super Street Fighter 4: AE
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl
Minecraft
Persona 3 FES
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Hotline Miami
Grim Fandango
Okami
BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend
Skyrim
Kingdom Hearts II
Paper Mario
Red Dead Redemption
SMT Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Souless Army
Mario Party 3
Cthulu Saves the World
Perfect Dark

Only 20? I can't do just 20! I wouldn't even cover the PS2 games with 20 slots!

1.Fire Emblem (GBA)
2.Halo: Combat Evolved (XBOX)
3.The Elder Scrolls 5:Skyrim
4.Mass Effect 2
5.Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (PS1)
6.Max Payne (Xbox)
7.Medal Of Honor (PS1)

16.Hitman:Blood Money
17.Xcom:Enemy Unkown
18.Medal Of Honor: Frontline (XBOX)
19.Command And Conquer: Generals
20.Oddworld: Munch's Odyssey (XBOX)

I didn't really grow up with nintendo, sega or the early pc heyday, so I guess this list is tilted towards more recent games, but nonetheless, these are the games I enjoy to this day. also, if I had been allowed, the Mass Effect Trilogy as a whole would have occupied the number one spot, leaving room for one more game: Portal.

Hmmm Hard to say, I've played so many good games. My list would probably wind up looking something like this:

Wasteland
Wizardry Bane Trilogy (Bane Of The Cosmic Forge, Crusaders Of The Dark Savant, Wizardry 8)
Ultima (series)
Master Of Magic
Alpha Centauri
Civilization (series)
Fallout (series)
Warlords Battlecry 3
Shin Megumi Tensei (series)
The World Ends With You
Final Fantasy (VI through X)
Sacred 2
World Of Warcraft
Star Wars: Galaxies
Star Trek Online
The Secret World
Quest For Glory (series)

Those are games off the top of my head I really loved/love, it can be more or less than 20 depending on how you want to break down series. As much as I like a lot of other series like say "Silent Hill" I can't really bring myself to give them a "best of all time" recommendation, sort of like the "Tales" games. Likewise, I play a lot of top down, action RPGs, however despite it's problems I think "Sacred 2" did more to move that type of game along than any other game out there, to the point where I've simply been disappointed by games like "Diablo 3" and "Torchlight" for not having been able to do as much. Prior to Sacred 2 my favorite would have been "Divine Divinity" for similar reasons, but I think Sacred 2 managed to do even better.

1. Out of this World (Another World)
2. Myst: Exile
3. Civilization
4. Secret of Monkey Island
5. Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday
6. Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
7. Temple of Elemental Evil (c08 patched)
8. Space Quest IV
9. Psychonauts
10. Barrow Hill
11. The Longest Journey
12. Portal
13. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
14. Journeyman Project 3
15. Day of the Tentacle
16. Sanitarium
17. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
18. Front Mission (SNES)
19. Anchorhead
20. Discworld

noreshadow:
Its funny, you can tell how old somebody is by there list.

It makes me sad that so few of the younger generation have played anything besides modern games.

Its kinda the same as being a movie buff, and never seeing anything made before 2003....

I understand It can be hard, since there was no bloom effect, bumpmaping, or havoc physics.
so if you don't own a pair of nostalgia goggles, Its hard too get into them.
the only way to really appreciate old games is to dedicate some time to just playing ps1 era games for like a month.
Only then can you see things in context.

But its worth it.
And at the very least ,when you get back ,you'll have a deeper appreciation for all the technology and work that went into rendering the MWCODBO2 Newbs head that you just Pw0ned as you t-bag it.

This is true, but can older gamers appreciate new games too or is it always nostalgia that takes priority? I've seen some antiquated top 20 lists out there (not so many here, seems more balanced).

Thing is, there's so many games coming out there's no time to go back. You're bombarded with better graphics, more realistic physics and when it comes to picking up a 20 year old pixellated game that hasn't been hyped as the latest thing, we aren't interested. Until we actually DO pick it up and realize there's some brilliant stuff out there.

Twenty? I'm going to have to think well on this one, I can't wait to see the end result:

Chrono Trigger
Dark Souls
Demon's Souls
Katawa Shoujo
Shadow of the Colossus
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill 2
Final Fantasy IV
Journey
Mass Effect 1
Planescape: Torment
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario Bros 3
No More Heroes 2
Fallout 3
Red Dead Redemption
Skate 3
Rock Band 3
Persona 3 (probably 4 once I actually play it)

That was harder than it should have been...

In the order that I could think of them (I guess that is the closest I will get to ranking them):
Dragon Age: Origins
Timesplitters Future Perfect
KOTOR
Mass Effect
Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
WoW
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance
Legend of Zelda; Wind Waker
Portal
Mass Effect 3
Metroid Prime
Worms armageddon
Star Wars: Battlefront
Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Mass Effect 2
Timesplitters 2
Civ 4
Super Mario World
Baldurs Gate 2
Portal 2

Only 20? Dude, I have way more than 20! But fine...

In no particular order...
1) Persona 4 Golden
2) Kingdom Hearts 2
3) Final Fantasy IX
4) Devil Survivor: Overclocked
5) Devil May Cry 3

13) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
14) Soul Caliber 3

16) The Sims 2
17) Morrowind
18) Kirby: Super Star Ultra (It's Kirby's Fun Pak, but with more games)
19) Pokemon Soul Silver
20) Alundra

I have way more games to list from the SNES and PS1 era, but it's only 20.

In not selected order, just to name them.

Starcraft
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Worms 2
Megaman 2
Final Fantasy (American)
Doom 2 (The Pit level 9 had the best soundtrack)
Bioshock 2
Soldier of Fortune 2 (Best physics ever)
Borderlands 2
8 Eyes
Castlevania 2
Oblivion
Daggerfall
Duke Nukem 3d
Warcraft 2
Rise of the Triads (best on DM with the polka music cheat)

Let's Try!

Bastion
The Curse of Monkey Island
Mirror's Edge
No More Heroes
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade

Heroes of Neweroth
Journey

Planescape: Torment
Team Fortress 2
Dystopia
KotoR I

2. The Witcher 2.
3. Dishonored.
4. Star Wars: The Old Republic.

17. The Cave.
18. Alpha Protocol.
19. Jade Empire. I want a Jade Empire II now darn it!
20. Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

Those are my top twenty favorite games.

It's been three days, I'm not trying to push the OP or anything but I'm really curious about the outcome of this whole thing...kind of a reminder that this thread exists and had an overall purpose I guess.

unikgamer? unikgamer.

Interesting idea...I'll see if I can even remember half of the games I used to play way back when.

No particular order here:

Final Fantasy Tactics
Quake 3 Arena
Killing Floor
Sonic 2
Intelligence Qube
Fallout 3
Killer Instinct
XIII
Bastion
Final Fantasy VII
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit
Super Mario Brothers 3
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Portal
Donkey Kong Country
Bayonetta
Terraria
Bioshock
Hitman: Blood Money
and...Spec Ops: The Line

I would put Amnesia on here, but I'm a giant baby when it comes to horror games and my save file is literally my character on a box in the water portion. I've loaded it up a few times and just stared for a bit before wimping out and playing something else. It's a fantastic game, but I've yet to finish it so I can't really throw it on the list without seeing the whole thing.

1: Doom
2: Jagged Alliance 2
3: Shadow of Rome
4: Roadwar 2000
5: Resident Evil 4
6: Wing Commander Privateer

16: Gradius 2
17: Undying
18: Ace Combat 4

2 Final Fantasy X
3 Sims 3
4 Final Fantasy VII
5 Dragon Age: Origins
6 Borderlands 2
7 Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
8 The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
9 Final Fantasy VIII
10 Sacred

12 Phantasy Star
13 Pokemon (Red/Blue)
14 Commander Keen 4

20. Minecraft

I am baffled at how many lists have Mass Effect 3 at #1.

OP?! OP...OP!!!!!!!!

IronMit:
OP?! OP...OP!!!!!!!!

I'm starting to think he was actually a clever spambot who has collected our lists of top 20 games so that he can advertise to us personally.

OP, I would like to let you know that this was a waste of time! No amount of ad revenue could justify the effort your ruse took, seriously, what were you thinking!

Although I would be very happy to see what games you'd advertise to me based on my list, actually please do this, I need more games like those on my top 20.

No order:

Deus Ex 1 & 3
System Shock 2
Europa Universalis III
Victoria II
Portal 1 & 2
Command and Conquer: Generals
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy XII

I wish I was so clever. Also, the theoretical ad ruse would take so much less time than actually compiling all the data I'm going to compile for this.

I'm all too human. : (

20!? I'm not sure if I can do it, but I'll give it a try.

20: Tetris Attack
19: Mega Man X
18: Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
17: Dark Cloud
16: Persona 3

6: Batman: Arkham Asylum
5: Persona 4
4: Portal
3: The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
2: Final Fantasy XI
1: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

There are games like Super Mario Galaxy and Uncharted that would probably make my list, but I have yet to play them. All and all, that was a pretty tricky list to make. Best game lists are a bit easier for me, because I don't have to think about it objectively. I don't need to personally play a game to get an idea if it is good, but I have to play it to know if I personally enjoy it.

1. Soul Reaver 2
2. Devil May Cry 3
3. Legacy of Kain: Defiance
4. Mass Effect 2
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Valkyria Chronicles

16. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
17. Assassin's Creed 2
18. Medieval II: Total War
19. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
20. Persona 3

OP!!? OP!!! OP!!!

2.Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
3.Megaman Zero/GBA/DS
4.Red Dead Redemption
5.Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
6.Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

17.Mass Effect 2
18.Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
19.Mass Effect
20.Super Mario 64 DS

I don't normally practise necromancy, but...

...if anyone has any idea of a scoring system, I will do the final list. My current idea, having scrapped a system wherein 100 points are allocated in total according to order as being too complicated for my simple mind, is that I just tally all mentions of a game. I also need suggestions on how to deal with mentions of series as opposed to single entries, because while having the series behave as a single game, other lists will have mentioned multiple entries, or some and not others deliberately, leading to those lists having less votes overall, if I count a mention of a series as a vote for all the constituent games, we have the opposite problem. I'm thinking of counting a vote for a series as half a vote for all entires mentioned explicitly by others.

Or if nobody cares, don't reply. :D

EDIT: Seems the thread has once again arisen. I may have spoken too soon.

1. Tetris
2. Half Life

20. Killzone (its nostalgic, fuck you)
