The thought occurred to me, while discussing the very serious subject of gender bias in game design, that I really miss the old "could Batman kick Superman's ass" conversations. So let's see who we can pair up in the most heroic or humiliating ways.

Ada Wong versus Marcus Fenix?

or how about Deus Ex's JC versus Gordon Freeman?

LEGO Star Wars Yoda versus Princess Peach?

Dude, JC Denton would totally kick Gordon Freeman's ass. Gordon Freeman is a man for the ages and a survivor in times of upheaval, but JC was born, raised, and augmented to be the ultimate tool of infiltration and termination. Freeman has a crowbar; JC has nanotechnological implants!

Lego Yoda over Peach, because of Force Stun. But wouldn't Kirby trump all of these examples, since he could simply inhale his enemy and thereby gain its power?

Ajar:
Lego Yoda over Peach, because of Force Stun. But wouldn't Kirby trump all of these examples, since he could simply inhale his enemy and thereby gain its power?

Nope, because one inhaled grenade equals no more Kirby.

Fenix over Wong. If we take RE4 or RE2 and make Fenix the main character with Lancer, Longshot, grenades and a steady stream of ammo for the weapons. Those games would take all of 2 hours to beat. Fenix would own the Resident Evil universe.

If we put Wong into Fenix's shoes on the other hand we would just have another set of cog tags to pick up.

Now a good match up would be Marcus Fenix vs Master Chief vs Samus.

I'd call the Chief over Fenix, but Samus is a harder call.

OK so here's a new one: Laura Croft versus Ada Wong.

They both have games i checked it out, John McCain Vs. John Rambo?

LxDarko:
Nope, because one inhaled grenade equals no more Kirby.

What are you talking about? Kirby eats grenades all the time!

rdeegvainl:

Tiger cage. McCain wins.

Russ Pitts:

I'd have to say Wong over Croft. Ada just seems like she would be more likely to fight dirty if the opportunity came along.

OK. How about Gordon Freeman (Half-Life) versus Frank West (Dead Rising)?

Russ Pitts:
OK. How about Gordon Freeman (Half-Life) versus Frank West (Dead Rising)?

Freeman hands down. He fights mutants and what not. Scary stuff.

West fights zombies, which, in my opinion, always have their scariness level overestimated. Zombies are stupid, weak, decaying, and slow moving. Not a single aspect of their physical or metal prowess is frightening. God forbid you fall asleep in a crowd of them, I suppose...

Also, Samus has them all beat. She has a non-reloading, rapid fire weapon strapped to her arm (which can turn into a number of other weapons quickly), as well as a suit that enhances her abilities.

PWN!!!111

good fun.

Serious Sam versus Will Rock!

(Actually, Will Rock sucked, but any excuse to say his name.)

I don't think we're taking this seriously enough

Russ Pitts:

Maybe this is a localisation thing, but isn't it Lara?

I feel like this is the right moment to point to this video.
Although I'm sure most of you will have already seen it.

Fenix has nothing on Master Chief or Samus. I mean he doesn't even wear a helmet.... can anyone say headshot?

I'm on a god of war binge at the moment, so how about Kratos Vs Nariko (Heavenly Sword)?

I got one that might get a red socks vs yankees heat going (or not):

Link vs Cloud

Blaxton:
Link vs Cloud

Depends entirely on what Cloud's picked up.

Cloud with just the Buster Sword seems like no match for Link.

But even if we disallow summons, Cloud with Quadra Magic linked (no pun intended) to Ultima would without a doubt kill Link in a single action.

I'm pretty sure Link would kick Cloud's ass, but that's just bias talking.

How about Hitman versus Riddick?

Even better, Agent 47 versus Golgo 13.

Russ Pitts:

How about Hitman versus Riddick?

I'm going with Riddick, no contest. Also, I'm going with the "Pitch Black" Riddick (more mysterious, more dangerous, and less humane), not the "Chronicles of Riddick" one. 47 is cool, but he still seems to operate within human rules, Riddick, on the other hand is simply an animal.

And, I was thinking, Cloud would stand still and Link cut him up while "waiting his turn" and probably crying too... yeah... crying. Emo punk with his crazy hair.

How about (doubt anyone is familar enough with the first character) Goku vs Superman. Both have comics, cartoons, and games.

We all know who Goku is. He would annihilate Superman because Goku's power is max.

Before playing the Halo 3 beta I might have argeed with you about Fenix not having a chance, but after playing it. MC just seems to fragile to say Fenix couldn't kill him.

No, I think it would be an even fight. MC doesn't shoot while taking cover kinda hard to get a headshot if all you can see are their hands around a corner. And hey if an Elite could kill a Spartan so can Fenix.

But with MC's new equipment he take out Samus. The power drainer and a plasma grenade.

So, I guess I'll say, Fenix over MC in a shoot out. MC over Samus in gadget combat, and Fenix with Boomshot over Samus.

As for the Kratos vs Nariko fight we can't really judge that one yet. We just don't know enough about Nariko.

Well, there are two distinct SPARTANs/Master Chiefs; the ones presented in the books and the ones in the games. For the sake of gameplay, the Maste Chief may not seem all that impressive. But, if one follows the Halo literature, you'd discover a Master Chief that can deflect airplane missiles with his arm and fight 20 elites in a close-quarters shootout/brawl.

If the fight is even based on the game characters, I'd still say MC could outmaneuver and outgun Fenix.

Can we allow extended canon material? Not sure if that's fair.

As for Master Chief versus Marcus Fenix, I'd have to go with the Chief based purely on the weaponry available to him. Also, he has a shield. Fenix is tough and all, but in this case I think technology wins it.

As for Agent 47 versus Riddick, I have to go with Riddick. It's a tough match-up to neb sure, since they seem to be each other's nemesis. Agent 47 is a trained assassin - the best of the best. Riddick is renowned for being hard to kill, and hunting his hunters. So, like I said, tough. It'd be a great battle, but I think Riddick would ultimately win. While 47 is smart and capable and whatnot, Riddick has supernatural stuff going on that would put him over I think.

As for Agent 47 versus Golgo 13, I'm going with Golgo 13. Just because.

I think for this discussion we should keep it to the games and cannon the games are directly based from, outside Cannon is fun and all but, if they can't do that stuff in the game it's nothing more than a fairy tale while playing the character.

You do make a good point about that shield. But against a torque bow that shield becomes a non-issue. MC just seems to fragile to me, maybe I think Fenix over the Cheif because MC can't shot from behind cover in the games at least.

Ok here's one Splinter Cell(series)'s Sam Fisher vs MGS(series)'s Snake, MGS4 doesn't count because it isn't out yet.

You can use cover in Halo, it just isn't mapped to a function. I'm not a fan of the hype and credit they are getting for features they aren't really responsible for coming up with (even if they did change it slightly). To say MC can't use cover is plain mad, its a basic combat tactic along with squeezing the trigger and aiming at what you want to hit.

Also, I think we have to take at least some stuff from outside of the games. Some characters aren't caputred well by the games alone.

If a character can't be defined well enough within the confines of a particular game, then that's a flaw that should work against the character. Stuff outside the game - novels, movies, etc. - is just Made-Up Crap, and shouldn't count.

I still reckon MC over Fenix.

MC is an artificially enhanced super soldier while Fenix is just a massive guy with an array of powerful weapons.

Did you just say that stuff outside of games is made up crap? I'm confused... what does that mean?

I think it should break down as follows:

Borrowed characters, which originally appear in other media: those source materials should be admissible.

Books/comics based on characters from games are, perhaps, less proper to draw from.

LxDarko:

So awesome.

I'm going with Snake on this one, even though I prefer the Splinter Cell games themselves. Sam is a great spy, but his full-on warriorness is a bit light compared to Snake's.

"Made-Up Crap" is is a different kind of made-up crap than regular made-up crap that's in game, is all I'm saying.

Okay, no, I don't know where I'm going with this.

Regardless of whatever accepted definition of made-up crap, for this discussion let's restrict ourselves to in-game made-up crap please. In debate and parliamentary proceedings, this is what's called a "rule of order" and we now have one. We're so official it hurts.

The battle of the gods: Amaterasu (wolf, female, sun goddess, from Okami) v. Kratos (human, male, badass, from God of War).

Russ Pitts:
Even better, Agent 47 versus Golgo 13.

As much as I love the Hitman series, the ending for Golgo 13: The Professional is something I will never forget, thus I go with Duke Togo.

Now, what I would like to see...

Ryu Hayabusa vs. Hanzo Hattori, that would probably end with the world exploding...

Woah!
That's a cute geeky thread there!

Erm, so, let's see.

- Samus Aran vs. Master Chief.

I admit that my memories about Samus have stopped at the SNES, but if the level of technology hasn't regressed since then, and if her suits still kick much ass with phase beams that go through walls, ice beams and whatelse, insane biosuit toughness that let her run in lava, several meditanks for more health, super boost speed, jump in air, near invincible morphball with super bombs, heavy homing missiles, etc., the Chief is cooked, shield or not.

- JC Denton vs. Gordon Freeman.

Freeman may have a suit of some sort, it's nothing against the weapons and implants of Denton.
Plus if Freeman looses his glasses, he's blind. If Denton looses his glasses, he's just a tad less cool.

- Laura Croft vs. Ada Wong.

A draw. They're both athletic, intelligent, tough, cunning and skilled when it comes to gunfire. Then Lara goes down inside the Plaguas caves. She's an archeologist, she starts to dig for fossiles, gets infected, and becomes super Lara (with a few mental issues). As a superior specimen, she's like an infected Krauser. She wins.
I don't like Lara Croft though.

There's one that I''ve playing around in my mind from time to time.

- Kratos vs. Dante.

Say, erm, Kratos with all techniques and powers combined, at the end of the first game, just before he joins the Olympus jetset, against Dante, at the end of DMC3 (level equivalent to that of the battle against Virgil), with, again, all techniques and powers combined.

Red Dead Revolver's Red versus Gun's Colton?
