I also know my favorites by thinking which games have I replayed the most often So here ya go: Chrono Trigger, A story this rich and deep in the SNES days were few and far between So there ya go. It's nice posting in a place like this because I live in a house of Halo freaks that won't look at a game if it doesn't involve mindless killing or football. |

My list just of the top of my head: Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain: This game has just about the right level of detail I want from a empire builder. But mostly it's watching clouds of fighters eliminate everything in orbit then watching my Big ships move in and nuke the planet from orbit till it glows in the dark. Super Metroid: 'nuff said Mech Warrior 2: A game chosen for it's "immersion factor". Top notch intros, voice acting, gameplay and music just pull you in and won't let you go. Deus Ex: I can't count how many times this game just made me smile with glee. Not to mention the already mentioned discussions with other Deus Ex players. Civilisation 1: Probably still the best one in the series for me. I really miss units being nothing but symbols. It just feels right to see on a world map. FF6: Steampunk/magic-tech has always been a few of my favorite styles. And it helps that the rest of the game is so great. Alpha Centauri: Okey, the units are not simple icons. But a sci-fi civ game?. By Sid Meier?. It is a match made in gaming heaven. Homeworld 1: Simply for all the reasons mentioned earlier. Tie Fighter: Finally I have the chance to smash those annoying crybaby rebels once and for all!. Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri: A straight up power armour game that was hours of fun. |

Anonymous Source Posts: 3 Joined: 28 Nov 2007 | What makes a game the best you've ever played. For me, what i find amazing about these games, is that most of them represent a time before i realized i was a "gamer." They come from a time in my life where i didn't check all the latest websites, and read all the latest magazines to find out which were the games to play. Basically i would go to the store with no idea what game i was going to buy, and amazingly i ended up playing what "experts" would consider some of the greatest games ever made, However i also got to play games that, being how i am now, i would have never have played, based on reviews, my "higher" expectations, or just the fact that i don't have as much time to take chances on these things as i used to. All of these games are games that i would play now. If my super Nintendo still worked, you better believe every now and then i would still pop in Super Mario World, or Kirby's avalanche, because they give me an enjoyment that i can't get out of games now, its like i loss some sort of gamers innocence that you can only have when you're young, and have no other worries in the world than playing games and doing your homework. 10.Kirby's avalanche- Screw tetris! If you haven't played this game yet you should. I remember long nights of me and my little brother playing each other, and him getting frustrated because he could never beat me. The fact that i can get this game on the virutal console might be the reason i get a Wii, as my first next gen console. 9. Legend of Legia- One of my favorite rpgs, and the first on i ever played. It had an interesting twist on the turn based combat system. I must have beat this game 3 times, and each time, busting out martial art combos never got old. 8. Galerians- This is one of the games, that if i was the age i am now, i would never have played. It was the first (an only) horror game i've played. The story line was excellent, 14 year drug addicts with psychic powers? Super Computers destroying man kind? Games like these make me wish that the developers had taken the time to fix all of the really annoying game play issues that hold back what could have been a great game for everyone. This is the only game i've ever had to restart after playing for hourss, because of said issues. However, even with all of the gaming issues, i would play this game again. The atmosphere of the game is one that hasn't been replicated in any other game i've played. I remembering being so freaked out playing thing game in the dark. 5. Knights of the Old Republic- I played this game when it was in the bargain bin. I didn't know just how awesome it was going to be. All i wanted to do was be a jedi. It was the first time i got to be "evil" in a game, and it felt so good. 4. Vagrants Story- Awesome story line, awesome combat system, all around awesome game, that i actually beat, and then beat again without taking a break, it was that much fun. I didn't know until this year that it was such a highly regarded game. 3. Super Mario World- Come on, i'm sure we all love this game. How many hours of your life did you waste playing this game. How many hours did you spend flying through the air, and suicided bombing the ground. Also, Yoshi creeps me out, i don't know why, i think its the eggs. 2. Final Fantasy VII/Final Fantasy X- Why both? Well both represent the sole reasons why i brought the systems they came on. Final Fantasy VII represents a time when i was "innocent" in gaming. I was still playing the SNES when everyone else was playing this, because i was too poor to get the systems when they first came out. In fact i didn't play this until the PSONE came out. I was in no way prepared for just how awesome this game was going to be. I don't know if i can put into words how much this game took over my life. (Though i'm sure you all have your games like this). I mean, when Aeris died, i wanted to cry. I had never been so sucked into a story line. I had also never seen graphics like that before. It made me fall in love with my play station, and the final fantasy series. And I'll probably always eventually buy the latest generation of the playstation, even the PS3 (when i can afford it) as long as they release a final fantasy. Final Fantasy X represents a different time. I was starting to become more cynical in everyday life, and if i had played FFVII then, i probably wouldn't have been so captivated by the storyline as i was when i was younger. I had played Final Fantasy VIII, and IX, and while they were good, they never gave me the same feeling as Final Fantasy VII. I brought the PS2 for the purpose of playing FFX. I knew the graphics would be great, i knew the music would be great, and really that was all i thought i wanted, since i thought i was "over" story lines, cause they all were stupid and predictable, but Final Fantasy X took me completely by surprise. It became another one of those games that consumed my life. Every time i see the scene where Yuna come out of the first temple and says, "I've done it. I've become a Summoner," i get a bittersweet smile on my face. 1. Ocarina of Time- This is the only game i have ever played that i would say is perfect. The sheer joy that this game gave me the first time i played it has yet to be rivaled. It makes me sad to think that i'll never be able to have an experience like it again. Every time i think about this game, it reminds me of a really simple time in my life, when i was happy, and whenever i go back to replay it, i feel like i'm recapturing a little bit of that happiness of only for a few hours. Back then i didn't know just how innovating this game was, all i knew is that it was fun. Everything was fun, the fighting, the dungeons, fishing, mini games, and even riding Epona, i wonder how many hours i wasted just galloping around the country side. The story line was awesome, and the revelation of who the mysterious person in white is one of those moments I'll always remember, like when Aeris died, when i just sat there with my mouth wide open staring in disbelief at the tv. I can remember in the very first dungeon when i got to the first boss, and i thought ,"how in the hell am i suppose to beat this thing?" I remember getting annoyed at Navi, when she would keep saying "HEY!" I remember the simple joy of making up my own music with the ocarina to call the scare crow. Alot of these games are obvious choices, and some i'm sure people will think, "that game really sucked." I'm sure that most of you notice that there aren't any PC games, or any games from the latest systems, but i never had a good pc to play games and i don't have any of the next gen systems, i have to wait till they cost less :(, and i can steal someones hdtv. But even if I did have those things this would still probably be my list. Simply because these games represent my foundation in gaming. They represent the reasons why whenever i'm in a bad mood or depressed i know i can turn to games to cheer me up for a little while. They also represent a time when thing we're a lot more simple. I honestly believe if i were playing these games for the first time now, i wouldn't have had the same experiences because i wouldn't have had the time, or the mindset to truly enjoy them. Wow this was a long comment |

Civilization is a bit difficult to place; memorable and massive amounts of time on versions 1 and 2 (didn't much like nr 3), but I'm really fed up with that game nowadays and haven't played Civ 4 much. Press Junketeer Posts: 459 Joined: 21 Nov 2007 | Reading back over the lists makes me question my own submissions. I played the crap out of the first Pokemon games for gameboy and, in my nerdy youth, even trained, traded and battled a bit with other people. I supposed I wouldn't put it on my list because I don't believe it to be one of the better games I played just fun and addictive. I also played the Sim franchise extensively for a while including Sim City/2000, Sim Tower, Sim Copter, and I'm sure a few more. Sim Copter I could consider putting it on my list if it was so bug-filled if only because I loved it and played it to death. I still play Sim Tower occasionally because there are so many ways to build a tower and still do well plus you don't have to spend a lot of time on it so sometimes I start a new tower, play for 15 minutes and then pick it up a week or a month later. The Sim City games were great and 2000 was even better because I could use the cities I created in Sim Copter but still, not quite top ten material. I also obsessed over Age of Empires 2 for a long time though never really getting through the campaign the skirmishes were fun and playing against other people was a lot of fun. Still, I think other RTS's like Warhammer 40k, CoH, and Starcraft were better if for no other reason than they included an attack move... |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1286 Joined: 7 Nov 2007 | In no particular order. Halo 3: I felt that Halo 1 was one of the first games I played that felt epic, as in having things happening on a large scope. Every FPS I played felt too character oriented and character driven. Halo felt like more than that, so even as a shooter with little more than basic components, it stood out against most of the other games I had played to date. While Halo 2 was largely disappointing, Halo 3 recaptured that original feeling quite nicely and reminded me why the first one was such a fond memory. System Shock 2: System Shock was another great FPS for me - it was so atmosphericand even though it presented little challnge, it was engaging and interesting. The story was compelling. The enemy offered to us in Shodan felt so much more fantastic yet at the same time utterly believable. Shodan is to this day my favourite videogame character, even beating out Ms. "In base four I'm FINE" GlaDOS from Portal. When System Shock 2 came out, it may have well been the happiest day of my teenage life, though sadly I never completed it. About halfway through I upgraded to Windows XP, which refused to run the damn game. Now I've found a reliable fix for it, and I can't find my CD anywhere. Galactic Civilizations: I'm not a big fan of real-time strategy games, and until GalCiv the closest thing to a turn-based strategy game I'd ever played was Harpoon 2, some 13 years ago. GalCiv was a struggle to conquer - the game controls made no sense, the way you explored and conquered planets was fiddly, and I kept going bankrupt. So after a day or two I gave up on it. then I went back to it. God damn did I go back to it. I looked at the game with fresh perspective and saw a rich, fulfilling Universe just waiting to have me stake a claim in it. The enemy AI was talented without being godlike and the status assessment tied in with the dialogue/trade windows was a brilliant touch. An AI that isn't developing as quickly as me will curry favour with me. An AI losing a war with me will (depending on our history together) plead for mercy or hiss at me with bloodthirsty vitriol. An AI whooping my butt will take every opportunity to gloat about it. I haven't played GalCiv 2 yet because it disappeared from store shelves in it's first two weeks and never reappeared, but I always look for it. Sword of the Samurai (Microprose): This relic of the late 80's is a treasure. You maintain honor and a standing army to go from being a local lord in ancient feudal Japan to the emperor's throne, all the way evading and defending yourself from politically motivated actions from your competitors. It's a game of skill, timing and luck and no game plays the same way twice. The Dig: Remember when Lucasarts made games that weren't Star Wars? I do. They were damn good at it. In fact the rest of this list could well consist entirely of old LucasArts titles, we'll see how we go. This epic space opera about a shuttle commander who unwittingly activates an alien starship that takes him and half his crew to a dead alien world is nothing short of breathtaking. for it's time, the visuals were astounding. The dialogue was well voiced with believable characters, and I felt the desperate hope of each character as they unlocked the mysteries of the ancient civilization in a bid to find their way home. The story was truly moving and the conclusion was the most satisfying of any game I've ever played. The Monkey Island series: Each of these games is renowned among gamers of the point-and-click adventure game area, each one a sparkling gem casting incandescent beams of wit and charm. I consider it the source of Pirates as a pop-culture reference: you were all thinking about it when the crazy voodoo lady showed up in Pirates of the Caribbean 2. All that scene needed was a wisecracking skull. Even beyond that, in the first movie, didn't you expect Will and Jack to start insult-swordfighting in the blacksmith shop? Day of the Tentacle: I'm running out of steam now. Go buy this game. Sam and Max Hit the Road: Yes, another point and click! Sadly as a child with an underpowered PC who only obtained games by transporting floppy discs 14 at a time to and from school to exchange with friends who would then dutifully pack them full of arj archive goodness, the videogaming options that shaped my tender childhood are limited in scope. Odd how I still hold onto such fond memories of those days when I'm sitting here, my Xbox 360 lying dormant not four feet away. Space Quest series: Sierra pioneered some seriously awesome foundations for adventure games with their Quest stories, and Space Quest was my favourite from the moment I played Space Quest 1. I think I'll have to grudgingly admit the series met it's zenith with Space Quest 3, but the addition of voice-acting in SQ4 added a new dimension of entertainment to the game that makes it hard to forget. 5 was probably my personal favourite in terms of gameplay though it's humour was barely present at times, and six was briefly entertaining but ultimately disappointing in retrospect despite my diehard fanboyism at the time of release. I could have shit pure joy when I saw the first promo video for SQ7: The Spinal Frontier - then it was cancelled! What were you thinking Sierra? Ok, you're making like ten times as much money now, but still. Is that nine already? I have one more. what's left? What defines my history as a gamer, helps to give you the full scope of what I have enjoyed in gaming for the past 18 years or so, from Asteroids to Assassin's Creed... I think my last vote goes to Mass Effect. I lvoe the story, I like the gameplay, and it seems to combine all the things I love. Shooter action, (what essentially amounts to) point and click adventuring, RPG elements, and a vast universe to discover the secrets of, one planet at a time. |

I'm dumbfounded by the people who said Oblivion, but that might be because it was the most disappointing game I have ever played. I still don't understand the praise it receives.
Anyway, I could never put these in any particular order, but:
Deus Ex - I lent this to a friend, once... it sparked countless discussions, all of which were very enjoyable, as is the game itself. It's intelligent and well done.
Civilization II - I'm not entirely sure why I prefer it over the sequels, but I do. Probably has recieved more play time from me than any other game, though it is now getting competition from...
Team Fortress 2 - Yeah, it needs more official maps, but on the meager 6 maps that came with it, I have had more fun than with any multiplayer shooter before it. Really, I don't usually like MP shooters, but the team and class-based mechanic keeps me coming back for more.
Alpha Centauri - Spectacular. Brilliant. The AI is kind of stupid, but that's what MP is for. This also sparked interesting conversations.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - Wow. If I can't name a single flaw I see in a game, it deserves to be here.
Morrowind - Mod for best results... even unmodded, though, it's quite the game... NPCs could use more depth, but oh well. The amount of time I sunk into it (with a feeling of satisfaction which Oblivion dangled in my face for a few hours before throwing it back at me) means it did something right.
Fallout series: except BoS. That was trash. Tactics was the first Fallout game I played, and was enjoyable, but pales in comparison to Fallout, which is, in my book, the undisputed 'BEST RPG EVAR!'
Not sure what else to put here. I'd be hesitant with anything else. I dislike platformers, arcadey games (which may explain why I never got an SNES even when many of my friends had one), and most RTS games, so that narrows it down. HL2? Total Annihilation? Age of Empires? Doom? Not sure.
