I know how you feel. Personally, I believe the feeling you're describing is due to the fact that Team Fortress 2 is based on an outdated design template; Small Arena + Teams - Cover System - Vehicles = Fun Arcade Gameplay Problem is, that design can only be used so much before it becomes boring.
I'm not all that fond of vehicles in FPS gameplay, I certainly don't think the lack of it detracts. And teams I think is a great thing. Small maps are sort of necessary without transport, but I think vehicles often make a mess of game balance and am not too fond of them.
That's why I'm only playing on cracked servers for now. If I'll still stick to it after a month then yeah I'll buy it.
Just buy it. He spent 192 hours before he got bored. It's worth it.
Everything in moderation.
That's more or less my feeling...but he may not enjoy the game as much as I did. It's eight whole days of gameplay...That paid for the Orange Box, easily.
That might literally be the issue. I haven't written off the possibility of going back to it later, but it may have been too much. I really enjoyed it, I really did.
You've just played to much of it. You burned yourself out. What I do is just play many different games, and do non-game related stuff like going to friends and junk, just pace yourself with it and it usually doesn't feel so empty.
Aye, my advice is no different from the others: take a break and come back to it later, and when you do, take it in small amounts. It's not the repetition alone- it's the repetition being condensed into a small window of time. Allow yourself other experiences to mix in and each one won't seem bland.

I think I fell into the same problem you have. I got the Orange Box the night it came out, got TF2, had a blast for a few days playing it hours on end, then dropped it like a dead limb. Course it could be that I was looking for something that replaced my Halo 3 cravings...
I played it shed loads when it first came out, then not at all when COD4 was released. Just recently I've started having the odd game again - hardly anyone in my clan has it, so there isn't a whole lot of incentive to have a real session, but the occasional game is pretty fun. Although it's scary how much I've fallen off the pace. Has it really been so long?
I played Team Fortress 2 almost daily since its release. but after a while the whole wore off a bit. I haven't stopped playing it completly though. A hour or two now and then, is plenty of fun.
I can only play on weekends, and I play it interspersed with CoD4, Psychonauts, Max Payne, and GTA. (Guess who likes Steam discounts?)
I think the computer is going to get turned off for several days...See you all later.
lol, people always miss-quote my name because of the [HD] which messes up stuff.
It happens to all games. I got bored of playing Fallout 1 and 2 sometimes. I started to grow weary of Mass Effect so before grwoing tired of it I put it off for a bit so that in a week or so I'll be up and ready to start playing again.
So you feel somehow entitled to steal someone else's livelihood for your own convenience. Nice.
You'll have to excuse my saying so but I find that attitude contemptible. There's probably a bit more I could say, but you are effectively contributing to the theft of, as werepossum put it, the livelihood of hardworking individuals.
I still love playing Team Fortress 2, but I do it very casually. I only have a fraction of the hours you've put in, but I tend to sit down and play the game for twenty minutes or half an hour, sometimes as much as an hour, then walk away. I find it great fun to sit down and just play for a few minutes since unlike many other games I play there is little build up or very long rounds. The only frustrations I have with the game really are from the few amounts of maps (being released with so few maps, and only one Capture the Flag map was almost criminal) and some annoyance with Critical Hits (soldiers spamming Rockets and getting a Critical Rocket that one hit kills multiple players ever tenth rocket is kind of annoying). Instant Respawn servers are also pretty annoying, but they can be avoided, at least.
If your so tired of TF2 then head on back to TFC and sharpen your old skills. TF2 is fun but I still think TFC is just as much fun if not more. Try to learn some of the things you put off back in the day. bunny hopping or trying all the conic maps. Can always try one of the Neo TFC servers. makes the whole game play something different. everyone has tricks to use. makes the game play less like a routine than with the normal mod. Im suprised at how many people who play TF2 have no idea that TFC exists. Its sad really. I mean come on where do you think they got the 2 from people? silly silly. ^_^
TFC is more fun because of all the community driven content. I loved a good capture the flag in the old days but put me in a rocket/conc jump map and I could be entertained for hours. Personally I can't get into TF2 because it just feels so boring. I need a game with a bit more dimension (though that isn't reflected in the fact that I'm playing CoD4, even though I'm about fed up with it after 30 hours of online play). I miss the days when Battlefield 1942 because that was a game with dimension. I loved BF2 too but I didn't have a computer that could handle it until recently and now I'm just not interested in playing catch-up.
Indeed, tfc's awesome :D
I felt like this after playing Call of Duty 4 for 2 days almost straight, I couldn't stand the game anymore, but didn't play it for a couple of weeks and enjoyed it when I went back
Exactly. Take a break. Untill next grand update, maybe.
I believe this is what i call taking a break you move on for a bit and then play it again later once you crave it again like a crack fiend. I do it with like 4 games one of them an MMO.
You'll be back. And you. Aaaaaand YOU, STEVE!!! Seriously, TF2 has something in it you can't resist. I "left" it few times and always came back.
Although many of the Team Fortress 2 players don't realise "Team" is in the title, Either. It's even capitalised! But some good points have been raised. get out, experience other games.
THE MAN STOPPED PLAYING ONE GAME. THIS IS NOT WORTHY OF A WHOLE FUCKING THREAD.
The official maps got dull after a month. But with a constant stream of custom maps has kept me going for over a year without any break bigger then a week.
I miss that game. Even on the PS3 it was the most epic online game ever.
I have 192 hours playing, and I've just about had it with the game. I'm not sure where my unhappiness lies, whether it's other players, having played just about all of the maps, not really wanting to deal with hacks and crap of various kinds, but somehow, over the last several days, I've just gotten sick of it. I had loved playing at first, and I've racked up a good number of hours playing, but every time I look for a server, my stomach turns a bit, my heart drops, and I feel like I simply won't have any fun. Probably it's having played nearly 200 hours of it, but regardless of the cause my heart isn't in it any more. My stats have dropped noticeably in the last week or two...I feel like I'm losing a friend, or something like that. Somehow I think it has ended...oh well.
