Muckraker Posts: 274 Joined: 5 Oct 2007 | *hears crickets* Gosh, I think we're the only two DMC fans here, huh? I saw this yesterday (didn't know it was available yet--thank you!) and downloaded it. I've only fooled around with it, but even though we play as Nero (blech!) it feels like DMC. The animations are just so tight, the familiar sounds. The music seems less up front to me. I don't know if it's a demo thing or a Nero thing, but rocking while Dante mows down demons was always a treat. Seems like it's just turned down too low maybe? I've only fought Berial once so far. Nice flames. :D It's a DMC boss fight, alright. I think DMC has the best boss fights--just upfront fighting. No gimmicks or puzzles, just a reponsive fight system that's looks badass. ;) I'm already a little miffed by how Dante-ish Nero talks. Sorry, but I have issues with replacing Dante in his own series. I'll be interested to see how this story plays out. Again, thanks for the heads up. I guessed a long time ago this board wasn't very big on 3rd person action/adventure games. The fact I'm the only one who replied sort of bears that judgment out. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 53 Joined: 3 Oct 2007 | It feels muted- especially after DMC3, but I guess that's expected with a starter Nero- although even 'out of the box' Dante from the lat game seemed to have a lot more available. Part of it might be the devil arm Nero has occupying the circle button. With just two abilities in the demo (one of which is the slow-but-flashy grabbing attack that just seems to bring combat to a crawl if used) Nero just doesn't have the speed or style we're used to from Dante. That's about my only complaint, though- the game feels like DMC through and through, and I had a blast experimenting with ways to smack around the various baddies in the two demo segments. It feels like they're adding back some of the elements from DMC1 while keeping DMC3's combat style, which is cool with me. DMC3 was basically a battle simulator linked together with a lot of parts that didn't matter, whereas DMC1 was a much more well-rounded game, so I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more brought back to the exploration/navigation elements of the gameplay. |
Beat Writer Posts: 132 Joined: 31 Oct 2007 | DMC4 demo was tits. I'm looking forward to this game. Nero's a change, but after the disappointing DMC2, and the obscenely hard DMC3 (I didn't get to play the Special Ed.), DMC4 is a really nice return to form. |
Paperboy Posts: 14 Joined: 11 Dec 2007 | Well I for one was a bit upset with what the demo had to offer, from what I can tell the toned down the difficulty a lot compared to the DMC3. Dante-2....I mean Nero didn't impress me much as well since aside from the fact that he looks like Dante it felt like all his catchy one liners were written by Dante as well. The devil arm was interesting and added a nice new element to the combat but aside from that it didn't feel like much has improved in the series other than graphics. I'm going to wait for the actual game to come out before I truly judge it since the full version will offer more combos, powers, and an actual story but I just hope it ends up being a better offering than what the demo turned out to be |
Beat Writer Posts: 146 Joined: 25 Sep 2007 | I loved the demo, although the 10-minute time limit could have been made a little longer, and they should have included markers when you approach a door that you can open like an 'X'. The boss fight against Berial was awesome though~ |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2240 Joined: 12 Oct 2007 | Uhhh guys this is a demo, I honestly don't remember Dante having much in the way of moves on the first levels in any of the DMC games. I also don't think its fair to criticize Nero for not fighting exactly like Dante since you know he isn't Dante. Personally I wish they made Nero's appearamce more distinct from Dante's but what can you do. All I know from the demo is that I want to play this game and I will be changing the buttons around for Nero, the Devil Bringer's (What a shitty name.) placement is just wrong with the way I like to fight with him. This game also reminds me alot more of the very first game which I think is a good sign. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 97 Joined: 23 Dec 2007 | I've been playing the demo non-stop now, and I've finally worked up the skills to beat Berial consistently. Feels great. Upon seeing the first trailers, I was worried about Nero, I thought that I was going to dread playing as him, but I find him kind of cool. Not nearly as awesome as Dante, but he'll do. I really like the combo opportunities opened up by the Devil Bringer. Constantly getting A and S combos with the grapple move. I found the taunt move while running pretty funny. I also agree that it seems that the difficulty is turned down a notch. I'm not happy with it, as I loved how hard DMC3 was, but I can understand why they did it. A lot of people felt alienated when they got ripped a new asshole on the first level. It seems that boss fights are now going to be supremely easy now as a result of the Devil Bringer. Once you inflict two bars of damage to Berial, his flames go out and he gets stunned. You can use the Devil Bringer to punch him across the level easily doing half to two-thirds of a bar of life, run up to him, grab him by his head, and slam it into the ground, doing just about one and a half bars of damage. Then, you can combo him for a few seconds, and punch him across the level again. This 30 second long chain does about half of his total life, which is ridiculous. I found the 10 minute time limit ample time. I finished the main part, moved on to the snow, killed the frost things, and took away half of Berial's life in the time limit. I am completely psyched up for the release of the actual game. |

I'm also a little disappointed that Capcom seems happy dropping Vergil off the map. I was very drawn to the idea of two brothers, once close, now at odds. Gonna go fight Berial now. :D |
Press Junketeer Posts: 433 Joined: 3 Oct 2007 | I've been in a community recently with a decent mix of people who are die hard DMC fans and folks who have never played a DMC game before. I've only played fifteen minutes of the first DMC myself. The way I see it, if this demo is a good representation of the starting difficulty, and it truly is easy compared to the insanity that is DMC3 (I've heard enough about it), then there's a good explanation for it. In fact, it also goes for why you start with Nero. It's to introduce those who missed the last three titles into the series. Difficulty is easy to see, but let me explain how it's better to have Nero than Dante for the newbies. Dante is an established character. He has his past, and has his background. It's honestly bad story-telling for him to go over the past three games for the new players, assuming he is the main character. Plus, they'd have to go back to establishing it all over again, annoying the old fans, or just keep going like nothing has changed, making the new fans lost. However, with Nero, you can reintroduce Dante in a way that pleases everyone. The old fans get to figure out what has changed between the past games and now, uncovering some mystery of a favored character, while new players get to gain backstory and learn about the previous lead character. I'm not irritated by Nero myself. I mean, I think looking almost exactly the same is a bad move on Capcom's part, but when I saw the extended trailer for DMC4 the story elements of Nero got me very interested. It's not like we're going to be seeing another Raiden, as Nero has already proven he can do some pretty hefty damage. Now, as for the demo itself, I enjoyed it, but I have mixed feelings. It's definitely fun, and I like the ability to juggle enemies. However, after playing a hack and slash like Ninja Gaiden, it feels a bit shallow. I know Ninja Gaiden also came after DMC, but the combat was ultimately more satisfying. Either way, DMC4 is definitely a title I'll be purchasing. |

I wouldn't throw out the possibility of Vergil being totally MIA here, theres gotta some sort of backstory to Nero's Devil Arm and I can only hope theres a good reason why he looks exactly like Dante |

The camera really irritated me when trying to play the demo and the combat was pretty weak, I dknow, not a fan of these sort of games. Same goes for Dynasty Warriors which I guess is kind of the same. |

Took a little getting used to and i still think there are some control and camera problems. I would have made the demons less multicoloured, they just look gay and retarded hopping around on one leg looking like a jester. The game does look really good tho. I think its worth a rent. |
Paperboy Posts: 14 Joined: 11 Dec 2007 | I'm a major Capcom fan (Resident Evil, Onimusha, Mega Man, Street Fighter, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, etc.) and Devil May Cry is one of my favorite from them. I will admit that the 2nd game wasn't all that great, but the first and third were down right amazing (2nd I blame on the poor choice in Dante's attitude). I already knew I was gonna purchase DMC4, but after playing the demo, my hype for the game increased ever so highly. As much as the demo was pretty contstraint for techniques... it was still a blast. |

Awesome graphics, not sure about the devil bringer and I think I'm gonna switch the targeting button to the trigger instead of the bumper but it seems solid enough. Hope it's harder though. Beating DMC3 was particularly satisfying because of it's toughness, requiring you to use every skill you have to win. Same with Ninja Gaiden, apart from the ridiculously easy last boss. These sort of games should be hard. I hope Capcom haven't forgotten that. |

If it's true they've brought Nero on board to allow new fans to enjoy the series, then they're gonna also not b*tchslap them with difficulty early in the game. If someone thinks the combat in DMC is lame, then they don't know combat. It's one of the most exploitable and well-animated combat systems there is. |

Just as the title says. I saw that the DMC demo was just realeased, and downloaded it as soon as possible. I thought it was fucking great, however much I may suck at it. Can't seem to beat Berial yet. Only tried twice though.
Opinions?
