Oh, oh! Almost forgot about this one.

Chrono dying in the middle of Chrono Trigger. Still one of the few times I've seen that happen in any game. 'Wait, where'd he go? ... WHAT?! Main character can't die!! How'm I still playing??! What... the... hell... '

QFT.

Also, having to fight lavos, and losing was generally "oh shit". I never saw a forced loss up to that moment; "Oh shit, 600 damage!"

Minor quibble. The main character's name is Crono, not Chrono.

Yeah...it is kind of odd having that happen. Wait...the game is freaking named after him. That's like calling FF7 (despite how much I hate this game), Super Aerith World.

GAH! His name is not Chrono! It's Crono! It's a play on words! Sorry, it just bugs me.

System Shock 2: Polito's Office. First I said "oh shit" and then I did it. Only time a game has EVER made me do that.

Silent Hill when you first see Pyramid Head *shudder*

Another one was when you hear the drowning warning in the original Sega Genesis Sonic games. ALWAYS sends my panic mode into overdrive.

Overall it's named after him. Minor spelling aside it's basically named after him.

The Darkness was full of "oh shit" moments for me. The first time you "die", seeing your girl get executed right in front of you, the first time you see the Darkness powers being used (that was more of an "aw shit", but still pretty damn great)...

Unreal: In the mines, where you first run into the Skaarjwarrior. The feeling you get when those lights start shutting off in the hallway one by one until its completely dark.. then the music starts. Definitely an "oh.. shit" moment. Also, in Unreal2, in the elevator, the "oh.. hell no." feeling you get when the exact same thing happens. Nice touch.

Portal... GLaDOS... you stuff the first sphere into the incinerator.

That has got to be the dumbest thing that... whoa... whoa... whoooa... whoooooa...

*chuckle*

Then comes the part that still gives me goosebumps... when that deep silky smooth voice comes on you immediately know that you just shouldn't have done it and that things are about to get nasty. Definate Oh Shit!-moment when GLaDOS says...

Good news...

Cue balls-tightening fantastic ending....

I second that. It was a fairly mediocre game, but in terms of story and the way things are set up, it's amazing. I was quite disturbed by the death of Jenny. She gets shot in the back of the head, her blood spatters on the window. That is not a good death.

How did you get Crono to die in Chrono Trigger? Not that I would ever actually do it because he is so powerful but I don't think I ever had that happen. My personal favorite is towards the end of Metal Gear Solid 2 after Emma gets stabbed and is dying on the floor and she asks Otacon to call her Emma and these are his words "What's wrong with EE?" She litterally dies right after he asks that question. The poor girl just quit upon realizing that even as she lay dying he couldn't treat her as a woman in any fashion. God it was the most morbidly funny moment I have ever witnessed in a game or even literature. He then goes on to talk about how he was sexually abused as a child and had to run away from home if you talk to him.

Also, there are only five characters for name entry, naturally.

He probably would have been called Chrono if there had been room.

How did you get Crono to die in Chrono Trigger?

Lose the fight to Lavos at the Black Omen (almost impossible not to do first time through because he'll probably one-shot-kill you, but the fight is winnable in New Game +), and it starts sucking in your characters, you have to walk Crono into it's mouth to stop it, killing Crono. It's game over if you don't. Resurrecting him is part of the subsequent plot.

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang. About the... fourth boss? The ice golem dude.

Weakening him with chicken noodle soup (with a soda on the side), and realising that it hadn't weakened him at all; then, 10 minutes later, having still failed to kill the bustard.

There have been alot of good ones here but I decided to put all the ones I can think of even if they have been already said.

STARCRAFT: The first time I got rushed Zerglings in Multiplayer

EVE Online: My First reach into an area known as 0.0 space where everyone can be attacked I saw a carrier and it made my ship look like a little dot.

FEAR: The first time Alma attacks and everything explodes (Not a person I Know can say that wasn't intense)

Here's a game not many people know Lock On Modern Air Combat: Flying at 50000 ft and then hearing the warning buzzer go off that you've been locked on to with an AA missle I've played that game for 2 years and still everytime I'm just like what the hell!

Splinter Cell Double Agent: When you have to kill Lambert and instead I shoot Jamie and Lambert Still dies. WTF!

BattleField 2: Having a Fighter jet drop a bomb on you and the last thing you see is the front of the bomb

Dynasty Warriors: One Name says it all Lu Bu

I think I'll cut it short and leave it at that :D But you have to admit the Oh Shit Moments are the things that make games awesome.

Bioshock: After arriving in Rapture and seeing that person killed by the splicer and than the splicer trying to make its way into the bathysphere.

CoD4: Doing the epilogue on Veteran and getting to the guy who is holding the hostage.... hostage and than my phone goes off messing up my shot and than I realize its gonna take another bajillian tries get to that point again.

Burnout Paradise (Or any Burnout game): When you get a really fast car and your taking it for a test drive down a road and you go over a hill and you see a wall (or a pedestrian car) and you just think, "Dayum!! That is gonna hurt!"

Bioshock: When you have a Big Daddy under your control but you accidentally shoot it and it turns on you with a ton of splicers around. (I don't know if this happens/ed to other people but it did to me and it definitely was an "Oh...Shit" moment)

FEAR: Playing it when I was 8 not realizing what the game was about...

SSBB: Realizing that I only got it on Sunday and I've already almost 100%ed it.

DMC4: Realizing I don't get to fight the opening battles.

Marvel vs. Capcom Arcade Machine: Running out of quarters right as I'm about to beat the final boss Onslaught but than losing, but figuring out the strategy to beat him. If that makes any sense please to elaborate on how it does cause thats just my rambling.

All these have happened to me in the past week, excluding the FEAR thing, but that still gets me.... especially the box art, looking right at me, staring through my every being.... (0.0)

EDIT:
FEAR: At one point (Back when I was 8), I was walking through some water (About waist high or something like that) and than one of those horror, changes to creepy stuff and people disintegrate thingies, happened and the water changed to blood and than I continued walking to the door and this skeleton, zombie, thing, just jumped up out of the water and attacked me and I freaked out and ran out of my room.

Brawl: Doing the boss battles on intense and getting through them all and starting with 0% damage against Tabuu (Spelling?) and he uses that circle blast, that kills you automatically, right before I was about to beat him. That was an angry "oh... shit!!"

P.S. That FEAR box is still staring through my every being.... Sometimes I look at it and I can't look away until something really gets my attention, kinda like its drawing me in...... Slowly... drawing me..... IN!!!

Introbulus:
Ah, I remember a very recent one for me...while playing Metroid Prime 3, in the flying city, shortly after running into the Space Pirates, and just a quick jump after a little skiff with one of their ships, in an area that was surprisingly easy to jump through, I open a blue door and expect to find myself face-to-face with another hoard of space pirates. Now, I was only half-paying attention at the time, so when the image of a pitch-black space pirate appeared before me and faded into nothingness like a spectre fading into the next world, I was rightly freaked out. And when I started scanning an entire room full of utterly mauled space pirates, I quickly realized something.

"Oh...shit, I'm about to run into Metroids, aren't I?"

A short while later, my fears were entirely confirmed.

Pretty much this. Oh, and Ravenholm. And Halo 1, when you watch the recently deceased Private's camera and flood start breaking down doors. I wasted three clips before I calmed down enough to aim. Not good.

Super Metroid. After defeating Kraid, you go into this room.
And UP rises the REAL KRAID! Big as life, filling two screens from top to bottom, ready to kick your behind in a glorious sidescrolling whoopassing fashion.
Also the sudden return of Lavamire in the same game made me and my brother jump up in horror.
Man, that game was something else.

Thats the trouble with gaming forumns like this, Spoilers will eventually leak though

SPOILER!!!!!!!!

The end of Halo 3, Master Chief dies. Or so you think.
*Twilight Zone music*

Wha? When do you think that? I never thought that. He goes into cryrogenic storage in the ending. Did I miss something? Is there some kinda secret "good ending" where he dies? That seems kinda counter-intuitive...

Half=Life: Opposing Force: you spend about an hour disarming the nuclear device, walk through a corridor, a door closes behind you. Walk up look through the window, the G-man rearms the goddamn bomb

Or Half-Life: Choose not to work for the Gman teleport leads to room full of BIG BADS, and youre unarmed...screen fades to black.

and of course right as the reactor goes nuclear in Half-Life 2

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but in Project Zero 2 (Fatal Frame for americans), the section where you start a chapter, bump into your sister...

SPOILER!!!

... and she turns into the evil bitch that chases you through the rest of the level. She chases you into a cupboard where you can hear her breathing steadily getting louder as she figures out where you are. That game's full of "oh shit!" moments, but I don't think any game's ever scared me as much as this one and that's the best moment.

Spoiler

System Shock 2. That moment when you run into the room and are thinking, "Hey lady scientist, I'm finally here to save yo....What THE F$#%!!!!!!!!! Wait...then who..what??"
Shodan: "HeL-lo hacKer"
You: "Shit shit shit shit shit!!!!!"

X-com tftd. The music made that game, but also that wonderful moment when the terror attack screen would come up with the little x in the middle of the ocean. "shipping lane under attack". Rarely have I ever loathed a type of mission in a game more than that.

Mechwarrior (any of them). When you found out the next mission was an escort mission. You and your enemies are in giant 70ft tall death walkers armed with nukes, and the guys you must protect are driving around in thermite lined minivans.
