Good Space Combat game

For many years now I have been playing Freelancer. It received very high reviews upon its launch and is hailed as one of the better space combat shooters. It also features a fantastic multi-player mode, and a strong mod base.

Anyways the game is 5 years old now, and I am looking for another good space combat shooter. I have X2 and X3 but those lack multi-player. I thought Darkstar One was terrible (plus i think it also lacked multi-player not 100% sure though). I played space cowboy online until that closed down this past year.

Does anyone know of a good space combat shooter that is out/coming out with a good multi-player mode?

Well if you are looking for an old yet what I thought was a great space shooter was a PC game called Decent. Decent was a space combat game exploring each maze in asteroid or planets where you have to destroy the core and make a quick escape before the planet or asteroid blows up. I know there was a sequal but I never got to play it.

As for recent games I know on the 360 there was a squareenix space combat game, forgot the title but it's square-enix so chances are it will be the only game by that company.

There's a game called Rogue Universe or something like that, I heard it was good enough to be the next Freelancer, but I had't had a chance to try before my motherboard blew. Haven't reinstalled it yet.

I should mention that I am pc gamer and do not own a 360.

I know what Decent and freespace are but they are so old. They have all died out. I am watching a few FS2O projects though.

Space Cowboy Online isn't technically closed down, it just got bought out. The company that did buy it changed the name to Flysis and then again because of copyright infringement to Air Rivals. The game itself (at least as far as I've seen) is completely unaltered from SCO, bugs and all, but it just went into Open Beta last week, so feel free to sign up.

Descent is the old game he's referring to (though if you find one called Decent, let me know -that would be a great tongue in cheek name for a game) like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent_(computer_game)
Great game in its' time, though I don't think I'd return to it now. If 5 years later you're ready for something new, then moving back another 13 years is probably not the way to go.

Square Enix game he's referring to is probably Project Sylpheed. YMMV as far as space shooters go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Sylpheed - some like it, some don't. I had some fun with it. If you've got a 360, you can download the demo, though its all SP (I notice you liked the MP)

thanks chaos will google for them now.

Also about rouge universe, I heard that was un-playable due to bugs. And did it have multiplayer? I checked and I am assuming it doesn't since there is no mention of it. I don't meant to sound like a MUST HVE TEH MULTPLAYRZ tard but that is a make or break point of space shooter in my opinion.

*EDIT* so rouge universe is supposed to have most major bugs fixed now. But can anyone give a yay or nay on its MP?

If you want a good multi-player, its a little tougher... good single player games I'd recommend Freespace 2 and Starlancer. There haven't been any really recent good ones that I can think of.

If you want multiplayer try out Allegiance. It's free download now, it has a pretty small but loyal fanbase. It's all multiplayer and team based space fighter sim/tactical combat. It works along the same lines as BF 2/2142 in the way that there is one commander who controls building and everyone else fights. I haven't played it in a year but I would still assume its around. It's decently old but its not that bad in graphics and gameplay.

Wing Commander series. Best of the best in space. A new release is hinted at by EA, and theres a fan project in the works with a demo.

I admit it's been a LONG time since I've needed to have a joystick plugged into my computer. I followed the Wing Commander games forever, only not getting involved with the Privateer saga. Origin being swallowed by EA was a shame, but I did enjoy Starlancer quite a bit when that came out. Still, there's many days where I wish I could play a space shooter game again, and while Ace Combat is one of the great flight sims out there, it's not the same as being in the blackness of space.

I'll be following this topic... surely this genre of game can't be completely dead. I'll definately be checking out WC Saga as well; looks exactly like the type of fix I need.

there was an article on the site a while ago about space shooters, but cant be bothered to find the link...

i miss space shooters. the alst one i played was freelancer, but like chrono said, that was five years ago. i havent played wing commander since the first one on my amiga, but god damn did i love that game.
i tried WC saga today, but for some reason the resolution was out and both side of the screen were clipped. couldnt find a way to change the resolution on the options menu either.

here's hoping someone brings out a decent one soon

I am literally (see:figuratively) gobsmacked that only one person has thus far mentioned Freespace 2. Brilliant game, super multiplayer, and free now it's open source. it's a win/win/win scenario. I was all set on playing it only today, but then my joystick didn't work. As the actor said to the bishop.

That would be because the OP mentioned he was already aware of it AND watching all the mods.

night_chrono: From what you've said so far, I gather you are specifically looking for a (relatively) recent or upcoming game that has multiplayer components. Is that right?

The resolution can be changed by opening the Prologue folder and selecting Configuration. Ta-da. If that doesn't work, check their forum or contact them directly. They're always very helpful.
