This thread is for the discussion of any aspect of GTA IV, be it plot, characters, missions, secrets, gameplay, likes or dislikes etc, without having to bother with spoiler tags like in the stickied thread.

That said, let's rant and rave!

I'll start with some of my likes and dislikes, and preface this by stating where I'm currently up to: Just moved to Bonham, "cleaned" the streets for Mallories mate whose name escapes me, and done the first Sniper mission. I will myself be going through this thread very carefully until I've played a little more.

I love the taxi system. It's great being able to skip a long journey across town for the times when you're really into some aspect of the story and you want a more movie-like experience. I'll typically start a mission, call a cab and get in, while listening to the dialogue if I'm with someone, and when the conversation is finished press A and bang, we're there. Or alternatively, I can call a cab, get in, and leave it while I go get a drink or go to the toilet or something, and when I get back be there or nearly there. It's just great having the option to be driven or drive yourself, depending on your mood.

The dialogue is fantastic, up there with any great film or TV series (even better than some). To give a couple of examples:
Nico to Vlad: "For an annoying dick, you're pretty good at being an annoying dick" had me in stitches. It was precisely what I was thinking at the time. One of the many random exchanges Nico and Roman share on car journeys about some ex-girlfriend of Nico's back home that Roman shagged also stuck out as being pretty funny, especially the way Roman was digging Nico and Nico was saying "Piss off!" "Fuck you!"

I love Little Jacob, even though I can't understand a damn word he says a lot of the time (even with subs on), and the bit where you meet his dad or uncle or whoever near the beginning where he had to translate the Jamaican slang for Nico (and us) was hilarious. "One laav!"

Oh, and the first time you hear Nico speak, did anyone else immediately think of Borat?

The euphoria engine really works, it's like the next level of ragdoll physics. The people look lifelike as you push or drive through them without it going into "uncanny valley" territory. I spent half an hour just crashing headlong into things on motorbikes just because it's so funny to do (although I had to stop when I realized my hospital bills had halved my money!)

I also thought the new wanted system is miles better, that is until I had a helicopter on my tail which I just couldn't shake. Then I realized if I drive under the elevated railway tracks the helicopter couldn't see me and my respect for the game design went up another small notch.

The level of detail is astounding. You navigate your phone like an actual phone. Calling 911 actually works, and I wonder how many secret numbers there are for people to find. The TV and internet is brilliant. The cabaret shows are actually cool, and although I dislike that woman's stand-up routine, it still looks and sounds like an actual stand up routine. Occasionally, a smashed up car won't start. There are different car-jacking animations for different weapons. When it rains it looks real and not bloom-tastic. I could go on all day.... maybe I will.

Getting drunk never gets old! One time I asked the taxi driver to hurry when I was drunk, and I threw up and got chucked out of the cab! Another time I wanted a burger, but stumbled and knocked someones burger out of his hand, so he started a fight with me. (EDIT: Sorry, hotdog. I'm from the UK...) Then the police came and tried to arrest him, only I stole a car so they immediately went for me, and hilarity ensued.

This is why I'm not all that far into the missions. Messing around is so much fun and I keep getting distracted.

This isn't to say the game is perfect (although I don't want to start that discussion again - everyone has a different definition of "perfect" and lets just leave it at that) and I do have one or two minor issues.

Firstly, and this may just be me not being too familiar with its nuances, the cover system. For the most part, it's well implemented. However, in one or two missions (the warehouse shootout with Dimitri in particular) I was dying a lot because it wasn't doing what I wanted it to do. Either I was sticking to the wrong wall and hiding in plain sight, or it was swapping cover instead of coming out of cover so I could run to somewhere else, and I couldn't shoot back.

The replay mission feature is slightly off to my tastes also. I'm on Bruces race mission where you drive the awesome Comet, but every time I fail, the replay option puts me back at Bruces house, instead of the start line. This means I have to drive to pick up the car, THEN drive to the race. It gets old and makes me not want to retry the mission.

Also, if you fail a mission without dying having used up all your ammo and health/amour, the replay puts you back at the start of the mission, but keeps your status as you are now, not as you were before the mission, meaning you have to go pick up health, amour and ammo again if you want any kind of a decent chance to complete it this time.

So, those are my thoughts, what do you guys'n'girls think?

I dident dare read what you posted since im only halfway through the game. But so far my favorite parts have been Elizabetha killing Manny, you killing Faustin and the showdown between Dwayne and Playboy X.

The last one was great, I was heading to Dwayne's place, it was dark and raining and I was listening to The Journey. Awesome.

hehe, don't worry, you're ahead of me mate!

Right I'm gonna stay out of here for a day or so until I've played some more story missions! Be nice to each other while I'm gone!

One love!

Ohh yes! I love how little Jacob Says Righteous instead of good and blood clot instead of bad.

The only thing I'm not keen on is on certain missions you can be in slightly the wrong place, so text won't spring, (get in the car/boat/helicopter) but other than that it's as close to perfect as a game has got so far.

I don't know how far you guys are, so if you haven't finished all the elizabeta missions don't read this.

I think the fact that your girlfriend betrays you is 12 types of awesome. In san andreas your girlfriend was just something to do on the side, here she's worked into the story. I totally did not see that one coming.

Well I'm about 60% through now and it's been a hell of a ride, I'd still be playing it now but work has dragged me away (Bah to responsibilities!)

First off I got to get the small irritations I have found with the game off my chest.
The cover and lock on system has some flaws but it's much better than any of the previous GTA's. There is only 3 clothes shops now and a lack of melee weapons (compared to San An's hardware shops and many more clothes and haircuts etc) oh and why can't we fly the planes?
How does the glass in the turismo showroom stop the car when you drive into it (yeah it breaks but still...) and unless you use sleep mode on your phone allot it's impossible to keep everybody happy and do the missions.

Anyway these are all tiny things in a fantastic game which I have found very hard to put down and it has made me feel something a game has never made me feel before, guilt, maybe I should recap.

When you have to choose between Dwayne and Playboy I decided to kill Dwayne because Playboy gave you the phone and stuff and had big dreams of changing the world...oh and he paid me (yeah it was a largely mecenary desicion but this was before i had done the bank job and was still a little low on cash), however after killing Dwayne I got the e-mail from him saying lets be friends and he was lonely and I bumped into his ex who I had earlier spared telling me what a great guy he was and after I kill him Playboy disowns me anyway saying Dwayne was like a father figure to him (then why the hell he make me kill him!?!?)

And I went to bed feeling bad about what I had done in-game, in a game to characters that were not real.

I told my bro to kill Playboy instead and he gets a free apartment, a new friend and once he gets the happiness up some gang banger homies to roll with him, I would have gone back and redone it but it means loosing like 10 hours play so stuff it but still I'm gutted, maybe Playboy will get in touch later and the whole thing will pay off but at the mo I'm thinking I definitely made the wrong choice.

One more thing and that is that after the bank job (which was fantastic, Armageddon on the streets and the best thing I think so far) money no longer has any value, there are no houses or anything that you actually have to save for like in San An (maybe there will be later? I hope so but I'm not holding my breath) and so far no car mod places again like in San An where you could actually blow some of your vast fortune.

Yeah that was really cool, it was so hard not to tell my bro that was gonna happen but leave him to find out himself but i didn't want to ruin it for him.

I'd say, instant redoing the mission comes at a cost... You can actually load a savegame but that will A) take a few seconds and B) dependending on where your mission start is located a lot of seconds since you have to get from your safe-house to the mission start location. So albeit not realistic in the ingame consistencies (e.g. people you may have killed at some point into the mission are alive again) it is a realistic (meta-)gameplay element and reference (imho) to the good ol' days of arcading your coins away.

I wish that on some mission the AI was just a tad smarter (I'm on the mission for Phil where I gotta steal two coke boats and run off) he walks into the boathouse and never thinks cover might be a smart move.

Yes!! Me and my brother were playing it and got up to that point and we just looked at each other mouths gaping :-O

Then we were like: "No WONDER she was so easy!" and "remember that time she was asking us if we could get drugs..." and it all made sense.

I've avoided the rest of this thread cos I'm still not even half way through and I'm scared to read any more posts, but I just had to come in and express how shocked and used we felt when that plot development happened. It's so much more effective than a similar scene in a film because your relationship with the character is built up over time. YOU have been picking her up and taking her to places, YOU have been getting annoyed with her for ringing you at the most inopportune time, YOU have been gradually getting to know the character through conversations over an extended period of time.

Then she fucks you over.

Brilliant. Just like in real life...

Francis's last mission, a real Kane and Able moment, cruising in the dark red Turismo in a hell of a storm, thunder and lighting, rain absolutely tipping it down, '1979' on the radio and going no way I'm killing Derrick, that fucking cop has got to die, try phoning the rest of the McReary's but no one else is answering, hope they don't disown me for this, wondering what dirt Francis has on me? Am i going to have to go to war with the police now too?

Why aren't all stories in games this good, this immersive?

quick question, I am currently dating kate and right now her fondness is 100% but every time I try my luck she just leaves and that's the end of it. I have taken her on like, eight dates so far and spent somewhere in the ballpark of $300 on her. This is especially frustrating for me because it accurately describes almost every girlfriend I've ever had. So my question is this: how do I have sex with my girlfriend?

Packie told you she didn't put out, though Nico mentions maybe marrying her when Roman is talking about getting engaged, so I dunno, will have to see how things pan out, have you tried doing all of her brother's missions and getting Packies freindship to 100% too? just ideas

i would just like to know what advantage i'm given for doing the police vigilanty stuff?

i started doing the police most wanted and basic police responds half way through the game thinking i was getting me something when after a while i realised i wasn't getting anything for my exploits.

so what do i get for doing this crap out of the police car?

i also noticed... the Enforcer doesn't have a Police computer in it. massive let down after considering how much crap i had to go through just to steal one. i thought i could steal one and just do a drive by on most of the missions, since the enforcer is super resilent to the point of being near bullet proof it would of been really easy... but alas my dreams where shattered!

oh, i also love the new star system
how the stars don't dicate what follows you but rather how what ever following you deals with you. you can get FIB or NOOSE TRU following you in 4 stars, however what changes in the next 2 stars (5 and 6) is how they fight you. like at 5 they all come after you with vengence and at 6 every one does drive bys

oh my god, I just finished the game and... oh man. I can't remember the last time a game has gotten me this emotional. I just feel like I have to talk about this. Don't click the spoiler tag unless you've finished the game.

For some reason I was expecting that by the end of the game I would be some high ranking member of the mob (or something), was kinda of sad to see that I was a nobody at the end, well a nobody with $500k

This might be stupid questions but, Is it possible to steal cars then sell them.. (other then the Brucie email missions) and whats the deal with the garage icon in the north east part of the map, you can't go into it and nothings special about the area

Actually, who decided to 'Deal', and who decided to 'Revenge'?

Me, I chose 'Deal', and I found it a fucking hard thing to do...

See, this is the bad thing about the two endings, and since I dunno how to make the spoiler tag, just don't read this if ya didn't beat the game.

The sad thing is, either Kate dies or Roman, and either way it's just depressing to the point I cried and felt like a fucktart either way, but I guess that's the whole "moral of the story" kind of bullshit. Anyway, back to taking out my frustrations on random civilians!

There, not so hard. Just use < quote> and < /quote> (sans space of course).
