Since I started coming to this site, I've been exposed to some of the weirder genuses of the Gamer species. One I've been noticing is people who call GTA IV shit. This troubles me on a number of levels, as I recently met one of these in real life, in one of my many social groups (okay, one of the four I attend in my capacity as a first year university student). The game continues GTA's penchant for excellent storytelling (Okay, the betrayal is becoming pretty monotonous, like every character has a bloody bullseye painted on their spine), brilliant voice acting, and downright cool everything, as well as adding a "skip the monotonous aspect to the driving" feature, complex relationships with perks...

Wait, I'm rambling. Bad Dingo. No babies for you tonight.

My point is people keep claiming that GTA IV is crap, and leaving it at that. There is nothing I have seen that means the game does not deserve its 10/10. Before you start, 10/10 does not mean perfect, its a rounding thing. It means the thing is pretty damn close, with one or two issues to it. What I want to know is why people keep calling it crap.

So, according to you, something that achieves a 9.7 should be given a 9, despite all rational statistics saying that it gos to 10?

Uh-oh... 100/100 is a perfect, score. As he said, 10/10 is rounded up, it could as well be 96, 97, 98 or 99 to get the "perfect" 10/10. NO GAME is perfect, every game has flaws.

@Cousin: ...i don't think so. Given that there is no such thing as "perfect" in any form of media, it would not make sense that a "10/10" is exclusively for Perfect Games. It would just be a wasted number that a game cannot reach. Ever.
A 10/10 does (and should) mean that it is beyond amazing, and that this sheer awesomeness makes up for ANY flaw that is to find within this game.

That said, i fucking hate Scores. I write for a Rock/Metal/Prog Fanzine, and every time i write a review, i get stuck on what Score (we have 5 Points, with the posibility of giving half a point) i should give. And I NEVER end up giving a score that is a perfect fit, because reviewing music, and media altogether cannot be classified as easily as rating it in 5, or 10 Categories.
While i certainly look at scores to get a vague impression of how good/bad a game is, i would be the first to say that i am happy if scores will not be used in any media press publication.

Well from this forum myself I've seen a lot who screams that SSBB is crap and suck and everyone of us who want it are called fanboys/fangirls.

My personal opinion:
GTA - Fun game! It was just soo much fun!
GTA 2 - Again, Fun!
GTA 3 - Mediocre, a good followup!
GTA 3 Vice City - This was much funnier yet I missed Liberty City
GTA 3 SA - Crap. It sucks soo much bullox. I only play it to sneak around with varius guns imagining that I'd b playing Metal Gear City instead.
GTA IV - Overhyped garbitch that has done.. what? Improved combat since the last part. I'll only pick it up if it gets released for the PC so I can replace the main character and cars.

GTA Fanboys! :p hah!

What did you give to United Abominations. Wait, off topic again.

Yeah, reserving 10/10 for the perfect game, and the basic knowledge that nothing that has come into contact with humans is perfect, it makes no sense to make the high end a useless number. Thats what I originally said. 0><0 means perfect in a numerical socre thing.

Reviewers who use scores have a criteria. If the game fits that criteria perfectly, why shouldn't it be given a perfect score?

It's a score, not a rating.

FYI, a fellow writer gave it a 5 of 5. Although he stated that "Tout le Monde (Set me Free)" was a rather unnecessary Duet, he still considered it the most likely metal album of the year (2007, that is).

Just to give a practical example that perfect score != perfect game/album/movie/book...nothing more (*COUGH*visit mstos.de*COUGH*)

I think the reason that so many people says that GTA4 is shit, is because there was so much hype about it before it was released. Thus the expectations for the game will be very much higher, and therefore it is much more likely for people to get dissapointed.

instead fo this score thing and back to GTA4. my problem with it is that it is too serious. i have no problem with serious games but that isnt what i was expecting from GTA the reason i played the other ones was the ability for mindless violence with no drawbacks. this one penolises(i cant spell wirth shit) you for that. if this was its own game then i thing it would be liked much more. but i kind of liked where san andreas was going. they did a complete change from the last GTA game

GTAIV's not bad. I like it's change from comic/cartoony (sorta) style into a somewhat more serious feel. i also thanked Rockstar for responding to the spanking it got over GTA:SA's "stat building" system by removing it =). I think it's good exprience.

though i think it's sad that GTA:IV jumped in the "take cover" button bandwagon. seriously, whats hard about crouching behand a car/strafing behind a wall for cover?

just a thought, i usally stick to GTA2 for mindless violence =)

How do they penalise you for mindless violence? I've been on a few rampages with no ill effects yet. If anything they let you off easier by letting you keep your weapons after death.

I like to think of it like this,

Theres this thing called hype, and according to hype this game is going to liberate gamers everywhere and create the most amazing game ever, this game that will be the ultimate game ever made

Then you get Bitter Gamers, and they have got so used to trashing any game not incrediably inventive and alternative that anything that can be considered a Mainstream Sequel, espically if it is backed by hype of GTA IVs level, must instantly be destroyed as theres no way it could match the original game which they played in there yester-years, and theyll be damned if every piece of evidence points against them!

Sometimes its just a fun game, inventive is great but tryed and tested works too you know.

I for one believe this is a superb game which deserves a 9. 10 cannot be perfect but GTA IV does have some noticeable problems (such as frame rate while driving fast at least on standard def) and on my game the graphics are great but my tv has not enough definition in sunlight/sunrise/set.

I do love the story, characters and everything except i think personally the radio was not as well thought out and funny as previous games more relying on shock humor then satire. The combat was done well and the driving is well done but could be improved.

The fun factor is extremely high as is the visual, story and gameplay factors IMO but a few drawbacks prevent it from being a monolithic game of awesomeness that deserves a 10.

A 10 is not perfect but it is a game that gives you so much more than anything you could conceive.

I am not at all disappointed with the game and it lived up to its hype for the most part.

I disagree with your assessment, and would like to state that, in my opinion, GTA IV is the best one thus far.

why? because GTA IV is the only one with a main character who really has a personality. in GTAs I and II, the main character was just "you". In GTA III it was "Claude", who had no personality it all.

Vice City had Tommy Vercetti, who was just an inveterate criminal with no motiviation other than "getting Revenge" and "Getting rich". The character was two-dimensional at best.

CJ from San Andreas at least had texture - a family he cared for, motives, dreams, a history and (so he thought) a future. At the end of the day, however, he was still pretty shallow. His entire personality could be summed up by the phrase "Kill that man? A'ight." and it was really difficult to identify with somebody that callous.

Niko's deeper. A psychologically scarred war veteran haunted by bad memories, bad experiences, and the knowledge that somewhere out there is the man directly responsible for the deaths of his best friends. His only qualification in life is as a hired gun and he's secretly ashamed of it, whilst simultaneously acknowledging that it's the best way to make a lot of money, fast. He's willing to follow orders and kill people, but he at least questions those orders if they don't make sense.

As a story, GTA IV is deeper, more engaging and better-told than any of the others. It offers the player choice, something you NEVER had in the previous games, and does it all with a sense of grit and realism that none of the others ever managed to pull off, while still maintaining that blackly comic edge of satire that makes the GTA series what it is.

Personally, I reckon it's a huge step up from any of the others, assuming you're looking for an intelligent and extremely well-produced insight into what drives a well-meaning individual to a life of violence and crime.

If, on the other hand, you're after a no-brain massacrefest with only the occasionally passing nod (at best) to intellectual content, by all means go back to the first game.

I was actually reading an article from a games reviewer that said that even if something gets 10/10 or 100/100 it doesn't mean its a perfect game...

People who say GTA is bad obviously became too hyped up. Thats why I don't listen to it now.

And that is what made GTA 1 so great. It was -YOU-. It wasn't Mr. Testesteron wrecking havoc, it was you. You picked a face, you wrote your name, you play the game. AND THAT'S what made it so great! Personallity matters little when it comes to mowing down the retarded citizens who litterary dodges RIGHT INFRONT of your car.

The GTA IV storyline interests me nothing at all. I don't care about that character. I want to play my own character or someone who isn't so shallow. Yeah, sure, war veteran who have done alot of shit including child aduct (spelling?).

As I said earlier, I'll get it when it ends up on PC for $19.95 and they throw in some cake with it.

It offers the player choice, something you NEVER had in the previous games, and does it all with a sense of grit and realism that none of the others ever managed to pull off, while still maintaining that blackly comic edge of satire that makes the GTA series what it is.

Give atleast 3 examples of these so-called choices.

Personally, I reckon it's a huge step up from any of the others, assuming you're looking for an intelligent and extremely well-produced insight into what drives a well-meaning individual to a life of violence and crime.

Aha, so they talked to a real-life "Niko" then?
Please, it's only fiction that COULD HAVE resemblence IRL.
And I apologize in advance in the case that I misinterpreted what you said here but I got the impression that you were pointing it out that this is exactly how humans be or experiance - or something like that.

EDIT: Actually read the last part and made some constructive points to it.
