http://games.ign.com/halloffame/

This seems like a really solid list of important videogames that deserve to go down in history. It makes a good starting point for younger gamers, or anyone for that matter to get a contextual grasp of videogaming in general.

Do you agree with list? Also, what games would you like to see added?

Rules for this list: games must be at least 10 years old, no direct sequels, although i guess we could flaunt that in here.

Also if you disagree with any on the list, please read what they have to say about them first (ie. why they are on the list) and then tell us why.

Replace Super Mario World with Super Mario Bros 3
Take off Prince of Persia
Replace Half-Life with Quake

Then I'm Happy.

Does Quake really add anything to the genre that Wolfenstein or Doom didn't? Perhaps it deserves a mention becaude of its online community, I don't know.
Why take off Half Life?

Don't take off Half-life. It was a groundbreaking event for gaming, most notably the FPS, especially when it's cousin, Counter Strike popped into existence.

I have played every single game there, and I agree with them all. Still, I actually believe that Maniac Mansion should be up there, with kudos to Day of the Tentacle, the sequel.

EDIT: At least Maniac Mansion was mentioned there.

Yes it does, no you didn't and no you didn't.

The description behind the entry sum s mine, and every sane gamers opinion.

"While id Software frequently gets credit for having created the first-person shooter (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom), few games have done more to move the genre forward than Half-Life. Valve's brilliant first attempt took the basic tools from earlier FPS's and turned them into something ambient, immersive, and mysterious. With a revolutionary application of scripted action, allowing players to see major narrative acts while in full control of their character, Valve wrote the rulebook on how to harness the full cinematic power of the first-person perspective. The world of Black Mesa wasn't a static play-pen but a volatile powder keg that could change dramatically in a few seconds, without the conceit of a non-interactive cutscene.
To compliment the scripted set-pieces, Valve embedded the characterization of Gordon Freeman, the MIT-grad turned gunslinger, in a world where characters reacted viscerally to your presence, from mild irritation to fawning gratitude. Before Half-Life, players were only given violence to interact with the world around them. Valve magnificently expanded the gameplay space, filling it with believable character interactions, environmental puzzles, and some perilous platforming sections which added up to a near-Odyssean experience.
Half-Life also proved to be a watershed moment in the evolution of online gaming, serving as the source code for two of the most renowned online shooters of all time: CounterStrike, and Team Fortress. While online communities come and go, CS and TF Classic persist almost a decade after their release with an active global fan base, from China to Germany. As games continue to evolve, thematically and conceptually, Half-Life will remain the essential blueprint for how powerfully immersive and diverse first person gameplay can be."

Well then if Half-Life is the "jebus" FPS why did it get lower ranking than GTA 4 and the same as Out of the Park Baseball 2007?

Yet neither of those are on the list.

Because it was released 1998. Games have to be 10 years old to make the list. Do you just post and never read?

I can't find where it says no direct sequels, but it does say only one game from each series per period. System Shock 2 should definately be in there, but it's not quite old enough yet I don't think.

Ok you caught me I couldn't load the page on how they it (too low bandwidth) but I still call that baseball game will not get in.

I am boring (why I've been called a robot in these forums) so bye bye.

I'd make a case for the following:

Master of Orion
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
Gran Turismo

Funny, doesn't it seem like Lucas Arts should have done a better job keeping Tim Schafer? The direction they took after Grim Fandango really sent them into a tailspin. How many Lucas Arts games on this list are post Schafer?

As for System Shock 2, that was around 2000, maybe late 1999 at the earliest. But yes, that game will be there. Certainly one of the best games of all time, and sort of put action RPGs on the map. For better or worse...

Where is Devil may Cry? It pretty much created an entire genre. Without it we wouldnt have the likes of: Ninja gaiden(the new ones), God of War, Chaos Legion, and Blood Will Tell.

You may see it in 2011. You know, the whole 10 years thing...

GTA1? Nooooh, they're probably waiting for GTA3 to get old enough. Everybody goes for the flashy 3d version with 0 features and crappy controls... GTA3 is the proof that graphics really DO make people think the game is better, including all the reviewers that keep denying it. Pah!

Virtua Fighter 1 needs induction too. The first game to let the player control polygons. No VF, no 3d fighters, no Quake (ie no 3d shooters), no polygon based racers, et-frikkin-c.

The 10 year limit is lame tbh, it cuts out 30% of all good games made.

All games on the list are most satisfactory, but I think Gamespot's hall of fame is better made tbh.

Replace Maniac Mansion with Monkey Island ;)

There are games that I wish were included on the list (like FFVII a blending of game and cinema), but overall I'm happy with the list.

Monkey Island is alreay on there (the first one anyway), I hope next year they also include shenmue, the one game that made a dreamcast worthwhile.

Now, im the biggest Lengend of Zelda fan you'll ever find, but do we seriously need 3 different versions on there? And that goes for Mario too.

Created an entire genre? Devil May Cry is like a poncy Double Dragon.

Yeah if you're twelve.
Also it's a hall of fame. Would you induct Artic Monkeys or Kings of Leon into a music hall of fame? No, they have to stand the test of time to make this list.

Really? Because last I checked Devil may Cry was the first game to put emphasis of style. Since then there have been alot of games giving you points on how well you killed or did something. With double dragon you simply walked around beating things to death.

So instead of taking note of the points I made you picked out a single thing and take a shot at it? You know I have lost the passion for this, I can tell it's just going to go around in circles.

Why is Pong on the list and not the "Magnavox Odyssey"?

Where's Goldeneye for the 64?

I think thats quite a thorough list. It covers pretty much every great old game you'd need that is over ten years old. Except, where is Goldeneye 64?

And Rod Sharona, I sympathize with you. That shatnershaman guy does tend to ruin every thread he ever touches.

I agree. they only need one 2d and one 3d game from each franchise.

But the NES one and the SNES ones are completely different games and stand out in their own right.
I doubt they will induct Wind Waker or Twighlight when their turn comes around because they are just more of the same, just a bit more polished.

I think the 10 year limit is a great rule. It keeps out a ton of Flavor of the Moment games that likely wouldn't stay on the list ten to twenty years after their release.

Honestly, in terms of "Greatest Games of All Time" lists, this one is pretty damn good.

Don't bother, it's a moot argument, it hasn't been 10 years.

Anyone agree about:

Master of Orion
Punch Out!!
Gran Turismo

All seem like these sort of genre defining games. Punch Out!! maybe not so much, but the other two should get some considerable credit, IMO.

Sega Rally Championship for the Saturn should be. Without it, no Burnout, Colin McRae, Project Gotham, or any game with sliding involved. For its time, that game was awesome. I still pull out the Saturn just to play it.

I certainly hope they'll add Thief on the list immediately on November 30.
