I've heard Australia don't even have Rock Band yet, and Rock Band 2 is set to come out this year for the yanks. Is this true? I used to think waiting 2 weeks to 2 months for a game was bad. Then I met an Australian. I feel for you guys. Let's just hope your next government will sort this out when the current one is voted out. If it gets voted out. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4297 Joined: 20 Dec 2007 | Ha, I think escapist community knows the most about this and couldn't agree with you more, unless they want to add more to the "Australia is a pain in the ass for gamers" list. Now to give this thread some actual direction, I'll propose the question: What could we do to change this? Boycott? Protest? Get rid of that one guy in the OFLC? etc. |

ARRGGHH!! I hate people who say that. It's Gametraders in Robina which is 3 hours away from where I live. They do nothing special to any other Gametraders aside they're based in Robina. Besides, you can't actually buy any R rated or banned games from there. they're still expensive as all hell, but offer a range of games that are rare in oither stores. Yahtzee most likely was able to get a game from there before it hit the shelves. Nothing more. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2330 Joined: 19 May 2008 | I feel sorry for you Aussies. it's a load of BS you guys gotta go through, with all your crappy rating systems, ban's and severely delayed releases. It's crap like that that makes me glad I live in Canada. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 77 Joined: 13 Apr 2008 | Yes, my Australian friends on steam have told me of that problem. It really sucks, but can't you buy it off an american market and have it shipped to AUS? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1422 Joined: 7 Jun 2008 | I guess that is why Australia is called "down under." You guys appear to get the short end of the First World stick. Yes, it must suck being a gamer down their. |

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that Australia is a PAL region, meaning that American games won't work. That's ignoring regional lock outs of course. |
Beat Writer Posts: 186 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | Yeah we still dont have Rock Band 1. Im pretty sure we get it at almost the exact same time the US gets RB2... Yep we're PAL A good thing about the delayed release date for games over here is that we get a few buffer weeks for bugs to be ironed out of games and occasionally extra content. (PAL version of FFX had dark summon-y dudes of which i killed none XD) |

For the 360 and the Wii, yes. But the Wii has the Wii Freeloader disc thingy. So its only the 360 that has a region lock. User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

Whats worse is that our current government is the one we tried hard to get into power to boot out the old one. I got a letter the other day saying that the Standing Committee of Attorneys-general (Censorship) is going to have an upcoming consultation process to seek community viewpoints on the matter. So, if they are actually telling me the truth, and not just giving me a form letter, we have a chance to have our say. Lets just hope Gamers can turn out in equal numbers to the outraged parents. Its up to us boys, we need to get off our asses and do something. User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

Pretty sure I saw the RB2 guitar kit on a shelf in one of the local markets the other day (a K-Mart I think). Thankfully I've kicked my "musthaveitbecauseitjustcameout" addiction and am content to comfortably wait. |

Yes, as the gaming sphincter of the modern world we tend to get screwed over and over (without lube) on price. And yes, as a final insult, our ratings system for video games presumes that the R18+ category is only for "grown-ups" who watch movies. BUT...... We are still the best damn country in the world to live in once you step outside your front door into the brilliant sunshine and realise that you won't get shot for looking at somebody the wrong way, won't freeze in winter, won't have an allergy attack due to high pollution, and can afford to buy prettymuch whatever you want as long as it's not a house! Did I mention our gorgeous women? :-) Aussie Aussie Aussie........ |
Beat Writer Posts: 132 Joined: 1 May 2008 | Rock Band is scheduled for release in Australia in the next two months I think but that's not the worst of it. The EB games website lists Rock Band-Game (as in no instruments) as $120, forcing us to pay an extra $289 for the instrument bundle. I've heard/read, I can't remember, that the US only had to pay $170 for the lot. Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this otherwise Aussies are getting ripped off...again. |

Like this guy? http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/man-dies-in-train-station-shooting/2008/08/11/1218306762192.html I'm not going to argue either way just pointing out that people get shot here too. This is definitely the best country around though - game creators are just jealous of our sexy women, gorgeous landscape and perfect weather, so they make us wait. |

sorry, im new and didnt find a post about it.... i did a seach and look through the forums before.. guess i missed all the whiney ones then :P We do have some good points, and yeah being behind is good for the fact we get heads up if games are worth buying and bugs worked out... just been so many games that ive wanted to play but never could... Plus side for australia and gaming, we are legally allowed to chip our consoles :D (im sure that hasnt changed) |

Yep, late October I heard and for the price you have stated. And Indigo, the second and last time I threw a boomerang it whizzed back over my head and smashed the toilet window. Thus ended my promising boomerang days. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2901 Joined: 3 Jan 2008 | Not to mention the entire .Hack// G.U problem I had, seriously the game was awesome incarnate and a huge step for JRPGs, and they don't release it! Don't even talk about frigging backwards compatabillity for the PS3 those damn bastards, COMPLETLY SHORTHANDED! and yeah have you seen what we can get if we import games for personal use if they were refused classification. Classification is mandatory, and films that are refused classification by the OFLC are banned for sale, hire, public exhibition or importation into Australia, carrying a maximum fine of $275,000 and/or 10 years jail. 10 year in JAIL! 10! You get less for RAPE!!! |
Anonymous Source Posts: 1 Joined: 12 Aug 2008 | I love Australia but we do get the short end of the stick. It's costing me $119.95 for a copy of Spore Galactic Edition...The games are crazily overpriced. I understand if they are slightly higher than America cause they have to import them and the dollar but we are getting ripped off. Thank god we can buy PC games in US and play them here but sadly that is only for some as companies can't decide whether they will issue us with European or US versions. Ach...Aussie Aussie Aussie indeed, we just need to elect some gamers to parliament. :P |

Well so what? We pay more for the privilege of getting them late and, in most cases games are made for a different region so if we order them they don't work. Edit: AND we might not be getting Fallout 3, dammit we own the short end of the stick with videogames. double Edit: our politicians ignore us like it was their crack, so even if we complain the best you can get is a "Thank you for your complaint etc" letter. |
On the Record Posts: 6226 Joined: 10 Mar 2008 | And yet, what the hell are you doing about this guys? We had this exact sort of thing happening a few weeks ago, everyone was all roudied up and threatening (notice the word threatening) to start up petitions and file complaints and in the end what happend? NOTHING!! I highly doubt that you Aussies are so great if you can't even get off your asses and do something. If that insult stirred you up slightly, good, turn to the dark si- err, use that anger to fuel your feet to get off of that chair. Oh and Americans? Apple Pie doesn't come from America, it's made in China. If that statement got you pissed, then use that anger to fuel YOUR feet to get off of that ass! BROTHERS!! WE MUST STAND AND FIGHT! THIS ATROCITY MUST NOT GO ON!! YOU PEOPLE DISERVE WHAT THE REST OF THE WORLD IS GETTING!!! YOU ALL DISERVE FREEDOM!!!!! On a more serious note, if anybody actually gets off their ass and does something to start a petition or whatever, I'd be more than happy to sign. |

I tried to organise that protest thing, but after gaining some sobering legal insight, I decided to try a different route. Besides, what are we going to protest to stop high games prices? User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

My mum made an apple pie just the other day? Are you telling me the Chinese are sneaking into my (parents') kitchen and making pies? On a more serious note, you Aussies should really revolt or something. |

And the annoying things is, is that all we can do is complain, complain to people who don't understand what the fuck were talking about. And if people don't care about the Fallout 3 scandal why the hell will they care about release dates or costs? EDIT:
No, you really shouldn't. |

Well, I was mainly thinking about petitioning or whatever for a R18+ rating since that's what we were fighting for last time. Fine, be a lazy ass and wait for something to happen. EDIT: You know what? Fine, let's all sit on our asses and complain. I'm not kidding, let's just sit around and see what happens. God i'm angry at you guys right now... |

Those who dont live here dont understand....
all our video games are $90+ for new releases, which is understandable when our dollar was half that of america...but now it is close to even... why should we have to spend twice as much on games... we cant even buy games over steam because of this...
we have to wait months and months to even get games that everywhere else has been out for ages.
we only get the ass end of games, if they dont do well in japan and america, fat chance in hell of us seeing it (ive been dying to play front mission 4 and 5 but it never made it here).
We dont have R18+ rating, so alot of games get banned, or re-realse with stuff cut out and or changed....
wtf this country sucks for gamers.....
